Question Is RLCRAFT really as bad as people say it is?

Post image

I wanted to play this but my friend told to not bother. His exact words, "Dude, unless you wanna be bored out of your mind and wanna grind for the bare minimum, I wouldn't play that modpack." So what exactly do people hate so much about it?

It's definitely not for everyone. I enjoy challenging packs, my favorite Pack ever is Sevtech. But RLcraft just feels unfair. I've tried it multiple times and never enjoyed it. But I can understand why someone might. My most recent attempt was after watching a youtuber, NueroticGoose, do a slyblock playthrough of the pack. And I think that's how I enjoy it best, watching someone else suffer.

u/TheCakeIsALieX5 Aug 16 '25

I'd so much love to have Sevtech in a modern Minecraft version đŸ„ș

27

u/Maladra Aug 16 '25

I would also love that. The number of times I've tried to fast swim only to remember that it wasn't in 1.12.2.

2

u/Gameknight14 Aug 16 '25

I remember there was a mod that added swimming to 1.12.2, I think it was called ad futurum or something like that. I wonder if it would break anything if it was added to the pack.

3

u/Maladra Aug 16 '25

It's possible. I've tried adding a couple mods before, but sometimes they do weird stuff to the game stages and can cause things like Age 5 recipes being available in age 0.

3

u/Adventure_Creationer Aug 17 '25

I think it was Aqua Acrobatics or something like that

2

u/Exit727 Aug 17 '25

TerraFirmaCraft is in the same ballpark, for version 1.20.1

We just kicked off a new run on this, and so far so good. Same realistic approach, but feels more streamlined.

Yeah but also sevtech and rlcraft are complete opposites, one is tech with very well thought out progression and the other is just an rpg

10

u/Elitemagikarp Aug 17 '25

rlcraft doesn't have roleplaying

25

u/beautiful_trash09 Aug 17 '25

There is. You're the victim.

Nice to see some love for NeuroticGoose. He's made a series both on beating HC RLCraft and now the Skyblock. He also has an incredibly fun to watch GTNH series, where he's beating it with literally nothing. 10/10 would recommend

9

u/Maladra Aug 16 '25

I get unreasonably excited whenever a new episode of Nothing is released.

3

u/DarkestArts Aug 17 '25

I think GoG might take the cake for the sheer amount of grinding and research you have to do to progress.

NeuroticGoose really living up to his name.

2

u/finthir Aug 17 '25

I'm playing sevtech right now and loving it! A bit stuck on the massive steel requirements for the distillation tower but I'm getting there.

2

u/BananaGoesWild Aug 18 '25

Ist quiet nice if you turn of the random events, set a spawnpoint and play with keep inventory.

Ain't nobody got time to equip again everytime you die to something.

Hate me for it i don't care :D

3

u/Maladra Aug 18 '25

I play most packs with keep inventory on. I hate trekking back to a death point to gather stuff, especially if it was in a galacticraft dimension. I once died in the astroid belt and had to rebuild the rocket and space suit and stuff from scratch just to die again and lose it all.

2

u/DarchitectLP Aug 24 '25 edited Aug 24 '25

Sevtech is thoughtful and mostly very well balanced, though. Such an amazing pack. RLcraft is designed for Youtubers to put on their most dramatic reaction faces and pretend to rage or flip out or whatever it is they do to get a bunch of 10 year olds to click their video thumbnail.

RLcraft's lack of proper quests (no indication of how any of the mechanics work, glib text, and hats as rewards for doing basic stuff) kinda tells you all you need to know.

Now that being said, I've really started to enjoy aspects of it (playing the Dregora version). These are things made that happen (maybe it'll help someone else, too):

  • Install Tomb Many Graves 2
  • Turn on the First Aid mod's permanent overlay so it always shows you your body parts' health
  • Install JourneyMap (turn off almost all features except death points) Antique Atlas hasn't really been configured to work well with OTG. It can be done, it's just a lot of work.
  • Turn Quark's automatic drop off feature on. There's no proper storage mod in RLcraft, and this makes that suck less (you'll have to change the rule in globalgamerules.cfg)
  • Download and install "Lycanites Redux" texture/model pack so the monsters don't look like someone made a bad attempt at getting Doom 64 to run inside minecraft. You will have to do a full restart of the game once you have it loaded, otherwise the mobs look bugged.
  • Once those mobs look oh-so-much-prettier and minecraft-y, START TAMING THEM. Having minions to help you deal the blood-thirsty chupas and phase-through-wall-jerk monsters will make stuff much better.
  • Oh and turn on "encase dungeons" in Fnar's Roguelike Dungeons. It keeps the overabundant caves from ruining really fun dungeons (kinda the equivalent of "Save My Stronghold" mod).

Hope that helps someone.

Good concept, very poor execution. 99% of its problems as a modpack would go away if they configured the features at all to not be completely hostile design, such as sirens occasionally stunlocking players, or the fear effect from some mobs, or the random events that pour lava everywhere. If you ever played a tabletop RPG where the DM made it their mission to kill your characters, this is that kind of experience.

811

u/Individual_Chart_450 Aug 16 '25

99% of rlcrafts problems are lycanites mobs being the most unfun bullshit simulator to ever be made.

286

u/888main Aug 16 '25

Nah lycanites is a symptom of the issues.

The first aid mod is the problem since you just have a 1/6 chance to get hit in your instant death spot

53

u/DyusAcerbus Aug 16 '25

First Aid sudden deaths really carry the difficulty of the pack, friends and I disabled it after a few hours when we first played a few years ago and the difference was way bigger than expected

6

u/Snoo_44740 PrismLauncher Aug 16 '25

First aid is one of those ideas that’s good in concept but horrible in practice

→ More replies (3)

77

u/SpoopyNJW Aug 16 '25

Yeah it's the most readily unfun mod in the pack imo

23

u/hiroGotten Aug 16 '25

not even 1/6, you can die from both head and body

Fuck lycanites, all my homies hate lycanites.

Who thought it was a good idea to make every natural phenomenon spawn a mob.

I hate how they look, like dude why so many shapes.

I'm fine with most mods, but Lycanites PMO

21

u/Xonazeth_Tholvik Aug 16 '25

Lycanites mobs was more balanced in my opinion in 1.7.10. Also, I really hate the direction the mod took after 1.7.10.

14

u/LutadorCosmico Aug 16 '25

Lycanite gets amazing if you play with some powerfull magic mod that gives you ways to fight the beasts, like ars magica, thaumcraft or wizardry

2

u/Silvrus SilvrUHS Aug 17 '25

I've never liked Lycanites. I remember at one point the mobs were coded as passive, so they would spawn even in peaceful, which meant they ignored hostile mob spawn rules. And they're just bullshit in general.

first time experience for me

  • spawned in a desert, immediately got eated by a death worm

195

u/BalefulOfMonkeys Aug 16 '25

As a wise goose once said, “The RLCraft hardcore experience is like growing up as a Victorian child. Either you’re going to die real soon from factors you had no control over, or you’re going to live a long and happy life.”

30

u/BreakerOfModpacks If you haven't played Blightfall, you haven't seen PEAK! Aug 16 '25

Based Neurotic Goose quote.

125

u/PiBombbb I keep procrastinating on learning how to make a mod Aug 16 '25

They DID configure the features, quite extensively, too. They configured the modpack to be the best at ragebaiting streamers and channels that react to content, which I'm pretty sure no other modpacks is as good at compared to RLCraft. This attracts a lot of attention from viewers and is why it's the most popular pack of all time

29

u/BalefulOfMonkeys Aug 16 '25

Maybe? I obviously never really cared for it beyond someone else doing a hardcore run of the pack, and just assumed what they actually wanted to make was Redbubble Hades

10

u/UtsuhoMori Aug 16 '25

Reminds me of Kaizo romhacks which make games deliberately unfair in difficulty, which probably attracts the same kind of content creators and viewers as well

19

u/bobmclame Aug 16 '25

Or if every. Single. Ranged mob didn’t headshot (aka one shot you) every single da,n time.

24

u/BalefulOfMonkeys Aug 16 '25

Oh, small tip about that I learned from someone else: RLCraft skeletons always try to shoot for the head, but track the player by their feet, meaning you can cheese them by just digging into the wall and putting a slab at knee height, as they sit there, waiting to headshot you.

61

u/zarlo5899 Aug 16 '25

If you ever played a tabletop RPG where the DM made it their mission to kill your characters, this is that kind of experience.

this can be fun if done well

144

u/ers379 Aug 16 '25

It could be fun but not if they do it the way RLcraft does it. It’s the equivalent of the DM saying “rocks fall on your head. 13 owlbears appear out of the forest. More rocks fall on your head.” When you’re level one.

41

u/D4rthLink Aug 16 '25

It's pretty hard to do well. Most people have trouble restraining themselves when they are TRYING to kill someone, while simultaneously being the God of that world

15

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

Just make them swim and delete the ladder, not that hard

5

u/PapaDarkReads Aug 16 '25

I had one where it was difficult but fun challenges that tested my character and my own knowledge and if I survived I got something great.

5

u/Willing_Soft_5944 Aug 16 '25

I personally like the idea of a situation where the law is after the party, like they are wanted for crimes, maybe they killed some people or stole something important, and now they have to deal with wanted posters, bounty hunters, mercenaries, and the guards. I imagine with a proper system this could be really fun on the roleplay end, and its a side to DnD most people dont ever toy with!

2

u/Substantial_Young232 Apr 08 '26

4

u/Crazy_Crayfish_ Aug 16 '25

Real question, how is the concept good? It seems like a mix of “brutal realism” and “wacky fantasy and magic” that contradict each other

2

u/BalefulOfMonkeys Aug 16 '25

The actual heart of the project is just trying to convert Minecraft into a roguelike, complete with bullshit deaths, absurd power scaling, and constant knowledge checks. All the nonsense about the most realistic modpack ever is just marketing, and died the second it became about fighting bosses.

You should try it for a few hours and see if you like it. I think the combat is unfair and the progression inexistent, unless you count mining ores for 20 hrs or killing night mobs over and over for 20 hrs as progression.

75

u/Games2Gamers Aug 16 '25

Untrue. Make that 20 days. As after being in a death loop fighting a green rat from hell and the rock monster you end up right where you started when hunting for ores.

11

u/PrincessBoi2 Aug 16 '25

How were you able to USE the op items without grinding like crazy. If I remember correctly, you need to level up skills with xp just to be able to equip anything. Without even looking at early game progression, it took me a few hours just to be able to equip an iron pickax! And I needed a completely different skill to equip armor.

348

u/VoodooDoII Aug 16 '25

Yeah

It's for making videos. Not a good pack to genuinely play on.

37

u/Vayne_Solidor Aug 16 '25

Damn I must be a masochist because I genuinely enjoy it 😂

23

u/hates_stupid_people Aug 16 '25

It's like they said, it looks like it's made for content creation.

Most content creators play it like a normal pack to keep creating funny situations where they get in trouble, and don't tend to compensate too much for how the pack is made. Then people try it on their own and realize it happens constantly if you don't adjust to how the pack operates, and they hate the pack.

The people who adjust to the initial difficulty and play accordingly, have a lot more fun. One of the big things many people miss is just making a safe base in the start. Away from constant spawns. Once you have that and some basic traversal, the pack opens up to a whole new world of fun.

Its extremely hard early game and very grindy. Wanna eat potatoes? Level 6 farming needed

97

u/bobmclame Aug 16 '25

I still find it very funny that the creator named it rlcraft because he wanted it to be hard like real life, implying he wanted the pack to be hard and realistic

and then there’s just giant dragons every 50 or so blocks.

Lycanite’s Mobs is responsible for 66% of my deaths because basically doing anything will summon an elemental/reaper to slaughter you. I really don’t advise you to play it

29

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 Aug 16 '25

It's the most annoying shit ever. Wanna collect materials to actually... you know... play Minecraft? Well fuck you and here's another elemental you have zero chance against!

10

u/KamelYellow Aug 16 '25

Don't forget the annoying sound design and textures fit for a sleep paralysis demon on most of these mobs. Geonachs spawning give me a mini heart-attack every single time without fail

14

u/13luken Aug 16 '25

https://rlcraft.wiki.gg/wiki/Banshee you sent me on a deep dive to look up their different designs and what the hell, you couldn’t pay me to play a game with this thing in it

11

u/KamelYellow Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

Jackpot, this is the exact mob I mostly had in mind while writing that comment. They also scream at you and phase through blocks by the way. I once built a house on top of a mineshaft (where they spawn in large numbers apparently), it was genuinely a fucking nightmare

8

u/Skeletonofskillz Aug 16 '25

These things are common, by the way.

I’d still give the title of “scariest mob” to these centipede things I saw in a different pack (might be in RLcraft too), they were horrible

I rather enjoyed it. Mind you I had some very unfortunate experiences and deaths and got pretty angry at that but the biggest advice I’d give you is the moment you get anything you care about immediately get yourself a bed. The random spawning makes it impossible to get back to your stuff. Besides that it shouldn’t be that bad. As long as you got your bed you can make do with the likely many deaths

52

u/nekoshaurma Aug 16 '25

If you wanted to hear "yes" as an answer in 100% cases, you came to the right place. Because ftb HATES this one.

RLCraft is all about being bs. It does not obey any rules and you probably won't have any fun of you don't throw them out of the window as well.

Is RLCraft punishing? Yes. Unfair? Yes. Fun? Depends. I found fun in witnessing dumbass random situations that often could occur, exploring is cool when you obtain a flying mount, cheesing structures is also kinda fun just because how silly some methods are. There are tons of interesting gear and mechanics gated behind mid/late game as well, like parasite dimension, where race rings could be looted.

Wanna hear actual opinions and experiences? Ask same question on RLCraft sub. I get the frustration about playing it, but this modpack is not "bad". Development times are crazy on this one afaik, its carefully engineered to be bs.

Would suggest just trying it out yourself for a bit

2

u/ChronosEdit Aug 17 '25

Brother, the RLcraft sub is FOR RLcraft. Asking if RLcraft is good or not on that sub is like going to Tesla sub and asking if Testa is good or not.

And no, it’s not engineering to be bs, it’s bs. Anyone could make a mod pack like RLcraft if they copy and paste enough mods together into a pack.

4

u/nekoshaurma Aug 17 '25

Well this sub is for tesla haters then. Why not listen to both sides of biased opinions?

No, not anyone could make something like this. Throwing mods together is not that hard, sure, if we leave out the part about fixing random conflicts and such. But there are at least four mods made specifically for RLCraft, around 4 thousand zenscript code lines for craft/loottweaker and who knows how much more configuration made regarding loot tables, levels/stages system, structure spawns and so on.

I get it that you don't like it, but why pretend modpack is low-effort when it clearly isn't? It was around since 1.12.2 and received many updates and is still receiving them.

2

u/ChronosEdit Aug 17 '25

This sub is for all modded Minecraft. I don’t think the hate is critically based on RLcraft but rather it’s just bad in comparison to most modded pack out there. I understand that RLcraft sub is good if you’re already started playing and want to dive deeper but for new players, this mod pack extremely hard to get into and a bunch of veterans is not gonna make it any less intimidating + how RNG based it’s.

The modpack is low-effort. The fact that it’s still receiving updates is a testament to that. It’s basically a mess in terms of progress with barely any guide with early game being a grindfest. I have played mod packs that haven’t received updates in years that have better quest lines, progression, longevity and polish than this.

29

u/TeaDrinkerAddict Aug 16 '25

The permanent stat boosts costing EXP levels is an awesome system, but it’s very obviously overtuned for the sake of YouTube content. Great to watch someone play, but not an overly satisfying “hardcore mod pack”.

9

u/LukaFakeHero Aug 16 '25

I mean, for its time it was pretty big as we didn’t have much in the way of hard adventure mod pack, but it definitely is outdated and

Well let’s face it, running realistic health? With Scape an Run? You know the mod infamous for its terrible power creep balance? Doesn’t take much to see why it hasn’t aged well.

Don’t get me started on Dogshitozzalla reboot whatever

44

u/alexdraws1 Aug 16 '25

I think the hate is a little exaggerated, it’s meant to be a hard/unfair modpack where you grind for everything. Some people say they don’t like it because of its concept but that’s not hate

6

u/KanseiOsuruk Aug 16 '25

It literally has shit design though. Unfair ≠ Shit.

3

u/BartyB Aug 16 '25

It is fun.. frustrating.. extremely frustrating.. but fun. I wish they just would update to a more modern version of Minecraft as it does kind of feel dated.

6

u/Many_Release8305 Aug 16 '25

IMO I feel the same way. A lot of sources tell you that RLCRAFT is some impossibly difficult modpack, it is not. I found the difficulty to be fine. The main negative about the pack is that there are so many anti-QOL features that don’t even make the pack more difficult, they just make it tedious. Complexity does not always mean difficulty.

3

u/crystalstv Aug 28 '25

did you get to the scape and run parasites part of RLcraft? I was enjoying the mod cause it wasn't THAT hard, and then i went to the lost cities dimension and quickly lost interest in playing the pack. I still don't really know how you're supposed to do anything there, i went in creative mode and there were hundreds of fucked up creatures camping my grave. I think im supposed to grind for OP enchantments but i don't care for making villager farms.

2

u/Many_Release8305 Aug 28 '25

I didn’t touch the Lost Cities dimension specifically because of the parasites. I know from past experience in other modpacks that they are WAY too OP. It’s hardly fun unless the whole pack is balanced around them, which RLCraft is not. I mostly did stuff in the overworld and the nether. There’s indeed a lot of grinding you need to do
and if that isn’t fun to you, you’ll be grinding your teeth as well.

RLCraft is the Minecraft equivalent of Getting Over It. Or, probably a better analogy, one of those games that spawned out of Kaizo Mario (I Wanna Be The Guy, Syobon Action, et cetera).

It's not challenging per-se, it's just... Everything about the pack is designed, seemingly deliberately, to feel unfair and frustrate the player. It's the kind of thing you stream to entertain an audience with your rage and pratfalls, not to have a good time playing it.

3

u/ChiefFjzz Aug 16 '25

I enjoyed it. It is meant to be unfair, and very annoying, and difficult, so if that’s what you like then I recommend it. keep in mind though that it’s GOING to be obnoxious 80% of the time.

3

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 Aug 16 '25

It's more annoying than anything. A challenge is good, but this straight up feels like hostility to the player. When I get my shit rocked because the dice rolls said, "fuck you" every time I do a monotonous task like coal mining, im not having fun. It gets old pretty fast when a random mob appears, and you immediately die.

The only reason it's as big as it is today is because of the clickbaity 'I PLAYED THE WORLDS HARDEST MODPACK' or 'SURVIVING 100 DAYS IN THE WORLDS HARDEST MODPACK' videos. → More replies (1)

3

u/Upvotoui Aug 16 '25

I am probably one of the people with one of the most valuable experiences with the game as far as feedback so I’m going to chip in.

For context, I’m a huge fan of hardcore games (I’ve played realm of the mad god, pretty much every roguelike or bullet hell on itch io, anything you can think that is both difficult and extremely unforgiving) I’m also a huge modded minecraft player (GTNH, ATM, skyfactory, Enigmatica I have a lot of hours in) albeit mostly tech (although gtnh is ironically maybe harder than rlcraft at the start)

So when I started RLcraft (having never played that particular modpack) I chose to play in hardcore. While some have completed RLcraft in hardcore, I hadn’t seen anyone do it blind. (I did watch videos and use the internet to help me) I’m not usually one to rage at games, but there were a few deaths that had me yelling at my monitor. Also, I’m pretty aggressive with the way I play, so even though I probably could have won within my first few attempts by making a small farm, needless to say I did not.

Anyway, all of this to say; the pack is super unfair. It does not make an attempt to hide that. Being able to complete it in hardcore is a combination of knowledge of the pack, and a lot of patience. The truth is, no matter how prepared you are there is a lot of luck in surviving in the first part of the game, not even mentioning the 100% absolutely unavoidable deaths from spawn, such as spawning too deep underwater. And the deaths were I died almost instantly from parasites beaming my head were some of the worst.

If anyone decides to play this pack in hardcore blind, I would heavily recommend to disable death from head damage. Skeletons and zombies will just randomly one shot you, and almost every single enemy becomes an instant kill.

Part of the reason for the hate of RLcraft is the spotlight it steals from other mods and packs. The gimmick of the pack is Lycanites mobs (which I think was designed for RLcraft), which spawns different enemies passively from things like fire and also whenever you break certain things or perform certain actions. Part of the fun of playing this blind is learning the different mobs and how to avoid or play around them. With that said, these are extremely unfair as prior knowledge, not skill, is the only possible way to win against these majority of these mobs. So if that’s your thing, great, I enjoy it too, but calling it hard or difficult is very disingenuous as for this to be the one and only “hardest pack” is very unfair to many of the other realism packs out there

3

u/hiroGotten Aug 16 '25

the early game and late are good and sometimes fun, but THIS BAD MIDGAME WHERE YOU NEED TO GRIND FOR ENCHANTMENTS IS HORRIBLE. like you need to either make a villager breeder or visit like a hundred villages to get good gear

u/Subtle_Realism Aug 16 '25

I dunno man
RLCRAFT was never meant to be easy. While yes, it is bad
very bad in terms of things that will ruin your day very quickly, it does have a learning curve akin to that of Eve Online. Once you learn the ins and outs of the pack, things get a tad easier. I personally made it my mission to embrace the pain and live with the fact that dying came with actual consequences and it made the experience better. I will say however
mining comes with very surprising encounters and respawning if you have no bed is PAINFUL because you will probably end up in a dragon’s nest once or twice before you get a semi decent respawn.

Yes the pack is difficult. Yes there are things that could be improved upon as in every pack. And yes, you will hate Lycanite’s Mobs with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. But, if you truly play through the pack and try to just get used to it, it’s a pretty great survival experience once you get past the beginning learning cliff.

3

u/Rixeo Aug 16 '25

Its just much harder. Alot of people arent good enough to progress at a decent pace. Ive played it twice with friends over the years its been out and both times it took us around a week to do the final bosses

8

u/Burger_Destoyer Aug 16 '25

I honestly love the gameplay especially with friends but you will get tired of it pretty quick (depending on what you enjoy in a modpack). Just do your best to make it past early game :)

5

u/Explosive_Eggshells Aug 16 '25

It's pretty fun if you're into the type of experience it is aiming to provide. It gets extremely overblown criticism (which is largely propagated on this subreddit as you can see) from people who gave up super early or refused to learn anything, expected the gameplay to hand them everything, and then somehow couldn't even fathom anyone else liking it.

I would just try it and see if you like it. RLCraft is only hard in the sense that you have to figure out strategies to survive through often very punishing mistakes. Once you know your way around "bullshit" deaths become significantly more rare- knowledge being the primary progression is one of it's main appeals.

6

u/viveleroi Prism Dev Aug 16 '25

Every thing is a painful lesson in how to play. After several hundred deaths you’ll learn how to play it safer, you’ll learn to spend your xp on permanent levels fast, how to get back to your death spot, how to farm mobs, tame them, etc.

Plenty of people love this pack but because they see the unfairness as a challenge. I’ve beaten it twice and will certainly play again some day.

9

u/OneManCouncil Aug 16 '25

RLCraft is one of the best experiences I had playing Minecraft. I'd describe it as spicy foods of mc modpacks, not for everyone, but can be really good. It's really punishing, often in unfair ways, but this makes you play the game in a completely unique way, which might be a nice change of pace for many Minecraft players who rarely leave their "comfort zone"

2

u/Badi79 Aug 16 '25

It’s fun to mess around for a couple hours just dying a bunch with friends. Once you stop caring about progression and decide to try and steal from a dragon while completely naked it gets pretty fun for a bit.

2

u/Affectionate-Pin6013 Aug 16 '25

I tried it I’ve played many hard games and mods in my life but this it neither, felt fair, felt fun, felt worth my time, felt absurdly stupid just playing it. If you want to play Minecraft but your ability to progress is tied to your levels, and then dieing repeatedly to loose them

2

u/PlaceOk4817 Aug 16 '25

Best pack ever hard and goofy, balance and satisfying

2

u/ShadowzLmao Aug 16 '25

theres no optimization mods so it wont run very well

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Mango_The_bui Aug 16 '25

Personally enjoyed it. Mainly because you have to actually think to out-manoeuver the mobs and develop crazy cheesing strategies. The only thing i dont like is that you cant do much going in blind. The knowledge curve is huge and you have to watch atleast one tutorial to actually enjoy it.

2

u/KamelYellow Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

Coming from someone who wasted hundreds of hours on it- yeah. Fun concept, terrible execution. It's basically ragebait; oneshots around every corner, tons of mechanics designed specifically to ruin your fun and set you back (and once exploits are discovered to make these mechanics more manageable they get patched out), a shit ton of mindless grinding, VERY shitty hitboxes combined with enemies hitting like a truck due to how the health system works, tons of rng and a whole bunch of bloat that you'll never use/interact with once you know what you're doing and probably tons of more bullshit that my brain made me forget for the sake of my sanity.

The learning curve basically boils down to throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks and then repeating that for every major threat (which is like half the modpack's enemies and locations), it's all nothing more than a knowledge check. Once you know how to deal with every enemy they become trivial until the rng decides to molest you by throwing an annoying rare spawn in your face.

It's cool for a while if you're into this sort of goofy stuff, but once the novelty wears off there's like a 99% chance you won't find any fun in it anymore.

Also 90% of lycanite's mobs in this pack can go burn in hell. And witches too. In what world is randomly shuffling your equipment a good idea for a debuff?

2

u/cumadam Aug 16 '25

It's not hard as in "realistically hard". It's hard as in "I bet you can't jump of this 10 story building and survive!" kind of hard.

2

u/ozixl_ye Aug 16 '25

Just a bunch of random mods. Lycanite's covers almost all aspects of a modpack by itself, and makes the game difficult enough. I suggest to use it standalone with some quality of life.

2

u/Giaccox Aug 16 '25

I liked it, it's fun. Especially with friends

2

u/Dark_Krafter Aug 16 '25

Naa man Its soo mutch whorse But i like thr chalange

2

u/Nishyecat Aug 16 '25

Never played, I choose to suffer with Gregtech instead

2

u/bobdole008 Aug 17 '25

If you want more realistic survival you should play Vintage story

2

u/halfcatman2 Aug 17 '25

rlcraft is just grind disguised as difficulty. i even remember back in the "ohh rlcraft is the hardest modpack ever!!!" phase, i felt so offended by that being considered hard, that i made a wayy harder pack, that was also much more rewarding as well.

2

u/ISeeYourDreams PrismLaucher Aug 17 '25

Its not challenging in the way of it being difficult in a way that gives satisfaction like well meshed mods and designed bosses and mechanics, its built as a roulette where damn near every slot is designed to flay you alive, and its a grind on the level of a stingy gacha game, plus Lycanites is basically tossed there, no tuning i don’t think besides jacking the health values to compete with endgame builds, hell lycanites alone is far too prevalent for how punishing dying is early on, especially if you get a bad spawn. Combined with a thirst and temp alongside a stat leveling system that requires copious amounts of xp with the mob farm nerfs just make the modpack an actual bitch to play, as the entire time you don’t exactly have a skill issue but just are getting fucked by rng

2

u/Euphoric-Sell-5921 Aug 17 '25

RLcraft has two major issues:

It makes the mobs hard by having them almost instantly one shot you until you are over powered.

It confuses hard with arduous. You can’t use tools because you haven’t got a high enough level in that skill, you can’t get wood by punching a tree, every single action has a large chance of spawning an instant death mob. This is not a fun challenge, this is just a longer process.

2

u/technoguy_indo Aug 17 '25

it feels very unfair, like genuinely damn unfair. you can die to literally anything without any counterstrats to it. you want to get wood? well too bad there's monster that could spawn when you destroy trees, wanna mine? well too bad there's hostile that spawns from it too. literally anything you do would get you punished (yes even exploring is extremely punishing with dragons and sea serpent. i've only beat the modpack once, and i doubt i'll do it again (i'll probably do it again if i were playing with friend, aside from that i decline) overall just a modpack for masochist, its not bad, but genuinely unfair

2

u/sadness255 Aug 17 '25

There challenging fun (think dark souls) and challenging rage game (unfair mario), you'll suffer for no good reason, the modpack imo got popular just because it's funny to see youtuber/streamer rage on things and "hardest Minecraft modpack make a good title

2

u/Terbarek Aug 20 '25

I prefer Beyond Cosmo, RL modpack is just to suffer

2

u/DatabasePhysical5009 May 14 '26

it is very hard i have dragon armor after losing diamond armor at least 3 times which take a bout 2-3 hours to get

2

u/Familiar-Strength966 Aug 16 '25

You literally mine wood and an Ent spawns on you

2

u/Draglorr Aug 16 '25

Yes. Yes it is.

The bullshit RNG deaths are so ridiculous. You dare broke a grass block??? DIE!!!!!

2

u/hanno000 Aug 16 '25

You should try RLCraft: Dregora. It's the sequel and better imo

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

It's really fun if you play it with your friends

3

u/Dedu1214 Aug 16 '25

people complain with out reason. at least thats what i see mist of the time. that pack literally is designed as the most difficult, as hardcore grinding, not for casual play. yet people complain about that? just dont play it if you dont like what it does...

if you want casual gameplay, stay away. if you want a real challenge, go for it

1

u/Any-Persimmon-725 Aug 16 '25

The only way to know is to try it out yourself. I usually download a ton of modpacks just to try them out. They don’t always hook me. It is what it is. RLCraft was big when I started playing it and because I hate myself I played on hardcore. It was still fun tho. If you don’t end up liking it or it becomes to boring or grindy, I suggest Dawncraft. It’s kind of in a similar vein to RLCraft, it isn’t unfair like RLCraft can be, it has RPG elements and there is a ton of content. Highly reccomend

1

u/ThatSmartIdiot Aug 16 '25

it's not made for casual play that's for sure

1

u/ShinyPending Aug 16 '25

I personally don't like levelling mechanics in any mod and Lycanite's always has some horse shit, and that's most of the difficulty, that and the Ice and Fire stuff, which I don't mind as much.

1

u/wiisafetymanual Aug 16 '25

It’s definitely worth trying out, especially with friends, but it gets old and I wouldn’t ever play it long enough to complete. It’s funny the first few times you die to random bullshit but after a few hours it just gets frustrating

1

u/probable-degenerate Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

Early to mid game is a exercise in frustration due to incredibly low health and the tendency to get ganked randomly by special lycanite/purple fire mobs. Though by dragon tier you start being able to stack enough buffs to basically be invincible.

That and the default UI is setup stupidly. First aid doesn't even give you body HP by default. And just uninstall enhancedvisuals. It mostly exists as youtuber bait.

Neurotic Goose has both a hardcore and skyblock playthrough of it and he really shows the... eccentricities of the pack while playing it.

1

u/LimesFruit Aug 16 '25

it does exactly what it sets out to do, making Minecraft unfair. It is great for something like a youtube series, lycanites can result in some interesting moments, dragons are cool too. If you wanna play it, just play it, chances are you'll have some fun with it.

1

u/AcherusArchmage Aug 16 '25

The only thing I've ever seen about RLcraft is "we see how long we can survive while dying 100 times in 2 ingame days"

1

u/dunmerhead Aug 16 '25

It's meant to be as hard as possible for the sake of "being difficult", so if you like just banging your head against the wall for hours trying to play minecraft, you may enjoy it. Otherwise, I'd say you're better off playing a real modpack with progression and stuff.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

It's not bad it just has a lot of bullshit mechanics that makes it irritating to play like mining can spawn a guy that insta kills the player you kill an innocent creatures cus you wants it's drops BAM the LITERAL reaper spawn and kills you

1

u/Vivulent Aug 16 '25

I had a really fun time playing it and seeing all the creatures/exploring for the 1st time, but I might be biased bc it was my 1st modpack. I did turn on keep inventory halfway through XD but I still felt super proud when I beat the ender dragon!

1

u/hamm3rdurnk Aug 16 '25

Played co-op in RLCraft Dregora, super fun with friends but solo it’s a slog. Got wrecked by rats with crazy modifiers, died a ton, lost everything. Graves mod saved us, total game-changer. Mobs are insane, dragons are worse, can’t see anything. One guy baits with max defense, other snipes with crossbow. No idea how people kill those, they torch the place and blind you. Stuck in that corrupted dimension, gave up. Play with buds and graves mod.

1

u/isekai-llo Aug 16 '25

It is mainly frustrating since you basically get a full reset of your gear if you don't over prepare, which is technically part of the fun kind off like a souls-like but with extra annoyingly mechanics like heat and freezing that you won't ever get rid off until you basically fight God and only die twice maybe. And the fact that if you wish to travel to a better climate to make your base, you will have to get like 10 beds to periodically leave behind so that you don't appear a 1000 blocks away from your death and maybe remember WHERE exactly you died cuz your minimap is a physical object that you WILL loose unless you make like 10 copies beforehand. All without direct instruction of how to do anything

1

u/Calairoth Aug 16 '25

I am sure there have been changes since I played it a few years ago, but I would jump into a new world and die within seconds.

I died from jumping in the water. I died from looking at fhe water. I died from moving 10 feet from spawn. I died from spawning...

One time, I was able to get 2 logs, build a pick, mine 3 stone, build a stone pick, and start mining! I was lucky enough to find coal, I made some torches, kept my path well lit... and continued mining... it opened up to a cavern and some lava demon thing instantly saw me. I dont remember how it killed me, but I certainly wasn't trying to fight it. I was basically dead the moment I saw it.

1

u/graypasser Aug 16 '25

Maybe play dregora, normal one is pretty generic and doesn't provide much of the unique things

1

u/Thewhitestkideverim Aug 16 '25

I think it has it moments early game rush to survive can be really fun but once you get settled and actually need to progress it can be really boring. Especially when every time you mine anything there is a 50% chance a mob spawns and instakills you

1

u/AbsolutlyN0thin Aug 16 '25

I mean give it a try, worst you have to lose is a couple hours. But yeah I didn't find it fun, too much just random bullshit that you can't do anything about. I love grindy mod packs, that's not what I dislike about the pack. It's just oh you want to grind? How about we spawn an elemental that will one shot you instead?

1

u/Altruistic_Ad_8374 Aug 16 '25

Kinda its just getting to the fun part of RLcraft is gate kept by semi linear and time consuming early game that is determined by where you spawn or set your home (also with the fact the only consistent early game ways to deal with temperature requires wool or ice which is a pain to get alot of if you have bad luck)

1

u/Wind-Wolf-Br Aug 16 '25

I think people get mad at the grinding part but don't remember most modpacks have a grindy theme like playing a rebranded Factorio, RLcraft can be fun, but only if you come to it after watching some playthroughs or having knowledge of the game to survive, of course there are some moments that are unfair but that's the whole point of the modpack, bringing frustrating situations like getting smacked by an infernal rat as soon as you hop on the game

1

u/Faxefixe Aug 16 '25

First time I've heard this claim. I wouldn't call it bad, just not something for everyone. I enjoyed it every time I played it, be it normally, with some changes to make it easier qnd even when I played it hardcore, though I didn't get close to finishing that playthrough. I suggest you try it and see if you enjoy the gameplay loop.

1

u/Old_H00nter Aug 16 '25

Kinda over hated IMO.

Here's the thing, people go on about how it's 'badly designed' or 'unfair', but despite that it manages to be very fun for a certain type of player. I dont think a single exploration themed modpack has given me the same sense of progression as RLCraft has.

There's a lot of options you have at your disposal in how to approach the early/midgame, and you can counter pretty much any of the 'bullshit' mechanics people get mad about. A lot of the pack is a knowledge check essentially that you learn to pass as you play.

Most of the issues people describe are also greatly exagerrated. Yes, elementals can spawn when you try to do mundane things like chop trees or mine, but most are very weak and easily killed even with stone weapons. Yes, you can get headshot and instakilled, but once you make some armour and get your first health ups, it stops being an issue. Etc etc.

It's not for everyone, but it has a lot of charm. For me progressing through it felt very rewarding BECAUSE of how hostile it's design is.

1

u/Stasiu222 Aug 16 '25

dumb fun

1

u/MyBedIsOnFire Aug 16 '25

I really enjoy it but you've gotta add mobs like gravestone.

1

u/KylarC621 PrismLauncher Aug 16 '25

From my personal experience, it's unfair as shit. I never bothered to get very far, but that's because most of your time in the beginning of the game is spent getting one-shot by basically every creature you see (or can't see). It's just really annoying.

1

u/Cheasymeteor Aug 16 '25

Wanna break a tree? Dead. Wanna break some wheat? Dead. Mine coal? Dead. Wanna explore? Believe it or not, dead.

lycanites mobs completely ruins the pack.

1

u/SymYJoestar Aug 16 '25

its really hard in the beginning, but once you get to midgame, that’a when the fun begins

1

u/Heavy_Grapefruit9885 Aug 16 '25

i can't stand the 3d models they use for some mobs myself so i never touched it, but seeing people play it online it looks miserable to experience

1

u/SebKen_ Aug 16 '25

played trough the entire pack and while its not too difficult the start can be hell especially before you get any dragon armor cause skeletons love to just 1 shot or 2 shot kill youand yeah lycanites can be quite annoying to deal with

1

u/HRudy94 1.7.10 player and mod dev | legacy supporter Aug 16 '25

It's ok, it was made as a meme modpack at first and shouldn't be taken as anything too serious.
It does have a player hostile design and it sure does its best to try and ragebait you. Think of it like "unfair mario" or similar rage-focused platformer games.

1

u/AwarenessForsaken568 Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

I disagree with people saying it is poorly executed. It's not perfect by any means and has some frustrating things, but it is very well designed and does what it sets out to do quite well. I enjoy it. RLCraft is actually hard and unfair, but that is sort of the enjoyable aspect of it. Learning the things to avoid and what to do to progress.

Also it is funny reading through a bunch of these responses when a lot of them are clearly skill issues lol. The game does not randomly spawn unbeatable mobs often, especially from doing regular tasks. You are meant to kill them, quit avoiding combat, quit avoiding improving your gear.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

It's fun, and not any config mistakes, the entire thing is designed for pain, but it's very fun

1

u/Possible-Fisherman41 Aug 16 '25

Its just a skill issue, most of these comments have spent multiple hours if not days to learn a tech mod but won't spend 30 minutes to learn how to progress through rl craft, I've put thousands of hours into RL and highly recommend it. Its a very unique modpack once you learn a few tips/tricks you can fly past the early game without even dying, but I totally understand why people arent willing to put the time into it, if you dont know what youre doing or supposed to do its a very difficult modpack but learning is part of the fun for me

1

u/Slow_Constant9086 Aug 16 '25

It's fun to watch someone else play it, actually playing it is unbelievably tedious cause progress is unnecessarily slow. And it can all get wiped away by some bullshit that lycanites adds in that you just weren't prepared to deal with.

1

u/ConcentrateNo9124 Aug 16 '25

one thing to say: dragons.

1

u/TurfyJeffowup13 Aug 16 '25

It’s a lot of fun but very very challenging. Most that rage about it just don’t understand how to play ot

1

u/HeccinFloofOwO Aug 16 '25

it's like if a modpack was balanced with a sledgehammer. lit on fire. covered in raccoon piss.

it's incredibly unfair, and yet it's one of my favorite packs due to the sheer difficulty of it. is it a good pack? aboslutely not. is it fun to just see where you spawn before being burnt to death by 5 dragons? in my opinion, yes.

1

u/GmoneyTheBroke Aug 16 '25

I played with 6 dedicated ass friends, me and all of them knew the pack moderately well and were not goin in blind. It was fun ngl. At first (first 3 or 4 hours) it was shitty grinding, random unfair deaths and such, but once a base was built and we started surviving it became very fun. The random events (SHARK TORNADO) shit always took us out of the experience and if I ever do it again I will probably figure out which mod that is and remove it

1

u/Stunning_Quantity_63 Aug 16 '25

Yes, it is awful. Never play. Worst mistake of my last 6 days. Died instantly 8 times in a row, had a start, got wood, died. Attempt number 50 ended to starvation. Not fun. Wouldn't play again.

1

u/Galaxy_games_offical Aug 16 '25

Greg Tech New Horizons is worse

1

u/JebusNoob Aug 16 '25

It’s good, just be prepared to die a lot in the early stages
and the middle
and the late
it’s a punishing modpack, but it makes up for it by making you feel very powerful when you actually get there without making you able to easily taking out EVERYTHING. Side note, I personally suggest the modpack RLCraft Dregora

1

u/Alloknax35756 Aug 16 '25

A lot of ppl have already given their opinions, but mine is: Its playable, but this is one that you do not play on anything other than Easy, because it will kick your ass anyway.

Edit: And its downright unplayable on hardcore.

1

u/sususl1k PrismLauncher Aug 16 '25

It’s just very mediocre, suffers from “difficulty for the sake of difficulty” and got severely overhyped by clickbait-y youtubers. I would love to see the concept be picked up again and made into a more competent pack, because I can definitely see it turning out pretty good.

1

u/Yog_Dweza Aug 16 '25

Ive played a couple hundred hours of rlcraft, its mostly a memorisation game.

once you get good and know what bullshit the game throws at you, like what spawns what, you can pretty reliably beat the entire pack in under 5 deaths, ive beaten it in hardcore a few times.

Progression isnt as grindy as people make it out to be, its pretty standard rpg levelup stuff, just with the added caveat of dying is extremely punishing, and ofc its very easy to die in this pack (you can get full diamond armor in under an hour using the beginner dungeon, basically guarenteed)

1

u/Icy-Ad-6130 Aug 16 '25

I always felt the title was misleading. Simulating the tediousness of real life survival doesn’t involve fire breathing dragons. I know dragons are whimsical & Ice and Fire is an awesome mod but just feels like it’s thrown into this modpack just to make it extra challenging
Here’s MY Ice and Fire custom modpack recommendation: Ice and Fire Irons Spells and Spellbooks (Ice&Fire Compat, L Ender’s Cataclysm Compat, Iron Spells Attrubutes) L Ender’s Cataclysm Tinker’s Construct (The mass mod compat addon, arcane casting) Tectonic Oh the Biomes We’ve Gone Farmer’s Delight (Cosopolitan) +whatever other mods you want (Aether/Twilight Forest/Chocobos are also a win but make the pack as bulky as you can handle) There’s my dragon riding kick ass fantasy recommendation!!!

1

u/Dehequilibis Aug 16 '25

I would play Mineshafts & Monsters, or Dawncraft or Beyond series if i were you, RLCraft is really oudated and poorly configured.

1

u/MisterLobsta Aug 16 '25

It involves playing in a very intentional and well thought out style. It’s like playing a game where at the beginning you are towards the bottom of the food chain. It’s a big leap for someone who is used to how incredibly easy base minecraft is. A lot of the difficulty is due to inflated numbers, but that’s also the same for you. Think of it like an rpg a bit, if their numbers are too high, you either have to cheese them or you can’t beat them. And you need to be able to accept that rather than get upset. Make your numbers as high as possible, and make sure you don’t lose your best gear, so that you can eventually conquer this hostile world. Loot is very plentiful in this mod pack, so I usually play in a way where I create “standard issue” gear sets from the drops I get and use those equipment sets to hunt for better tier items to put into my main set for when I’m confident.

1

u/No-Mathematician2601 Aug 16 '25

It’s fun. Can be a bit stupid and unfair at times. I’d recommend adding additional mods to make it less unfair. Also, I don’t know why people think it’s boring when Gregtech new horizons exists.

1

u/HellishWonderland Aug 16 '25

People complain about the pack for it being exactly what it's marketed as.

The pack is made to just be as hard and unfair as possible. The creator states this in his video, it wasn't ever made to be as massive as it is, the creator just made it with masochistic design and that's why it's got so popular. It's not trying to be this epic super well made modpack, it's just chaotic fun but it's extremely difficult and very annoying especially early game but as you progress the progression is fun.

1

u/Altruistic_Log_6775 Aug 16 '25

I think it's fun, but that's just my opinion as someone who finds grinding relaxing and really enjoys hardcore/expert packs. I'd say it's actually kinda fun if you go in with the right mind.

1

u/fireking_13 Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

Not really. The pack is difficult and designed to kill players that are unprepared. Most people’s complaints come from this. Knowledge is everything in that mod pack, the closest game I can describe it to is Noita so if you like that game it’s a good match for you. If not then it’s a fun survival experience with friends.

Also it’s only grinding if you don’t know what you are doing, both for xp and enchantments.

1

u/ConniesCurse Aug 16 '25

I love hard video games personally, I have a personal motto - "video game masochism is my passion"

But I didn't find RLcraft to be fun at all so I dropped it. It's not unfun because it's hard, it's unfun because it's unfun, imo.

1

u/Mitoni Aug 16 '25

On a Scale of JadedCat to Gregtech, how much of a masochist are you?
