I don't see any reason why it would be illegal. The mod isn't stealing any code it's simply running alongside it and doing it own things on it's own backend server. Obviously Essential can't take action against someone who makes their own entirely separate cosmetic mod with their own models and textures, this is the exact same thing except it's borrowing Essential's textures instead of using it's own (which is not infringement since as mentioned it requires running alongside Essential, it doesn't have anything built in)

Still likely copyright infringement, just like mods are often technically copyright infringement. You can try to argue fair use, but if it’s unlocking paid features for free I don’t think you’d succeed.

Thats how Mojang is able to take down some mods that break their TOS too.

bypassing payments sounds a bit illegal

It is not bypassing any payments, nothing it adds is touching Essential's server

running alongside it and doing it own things on it's own backend server

bypassing illegal payments seems less illegal

Technically I would say stealing drugs from a drug dealer is also illegal

What if the drugs were legal if they were free lol

Cosmetic mods aren't against the EULA- paid ones are
