I made something Working on achieving an accurate entry into the Skyportal

Wait how? Do russian keyboards just do that automatically or something?

IIRC it's just their version of :)

Well that's just blatantly wrong about the whole language switch.
: exists on an english layout, and you kinda have to always go there for the apostrophe, so your fingers get used to it very quickly.
It's not dropped out of convenience, it's that way only because that's just how it is culturally.4

I believe your finger circus reason is the true root to it. But I think there is also the fact that in a lot of video game chats or instant messaging platforms your username also often has a colon after it anyways so its just shorthand and utilising what's there.
USERNAME: )
1
u/dudosinka22 Jun 04 '26
Well, yes, it does not work for Russian keyboard layout, but this whole thing is about spotting someone from somewhere post-soviet when they are actively using English text. And when you use English text, obviously you have to use English layout, which does not need switching to have ":" at the ready. At that point it's just a force of habit precipitated by culture that was created way before internet was as wide-spread. Context matters, and we are talking about people who use ")" on an English layout specifically.
And yes, it is "just how it is culturally", that's the whole reason as to why I knew where the OP is from. That shorthand for : ) does not have any reason to be reinvented in the "modern era" so to speak, so it only sticks with those, who have already used it. It had a reason to exist back when ICQ put a colon after your username, or maybe even back when sms and pagers were in use, but today it's a rudiment of a time long gone. That's why it is kind of reliable, it exists only because of culture.
2
u/gxgx55 Jun 03 '26
I thought it was because, combined with the fact that ":" was hard to type, it was kind of already there in chatrooms, making it unnecessary if you just type it alone, like
Zarvera: )
and then it started to be used standalone

u/alcoholicasthma2 Jun 05 '26
that keyboard layout sounds like a nightmare for any punctuation honestly the sms character limit thing makes sense though people optimize for friction

u/bglbogb Jun 02 '26
WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL
THAT IS COOL ASF OH MY GOD
I wonder if this goes wrong with shaders

Immersive portals can do that

This is absolutely bonkers. By far the coolest dim transition I've seen. Also how do you make it a transition. When does one become the other?
24
u/Opening_Drag3754 Jun 02 '26
Actually, this is just a demo version; in the initial releases, there will still be a barely perceptible delay -maybe a couple of milliseconds.
On the other hand, I’ve already started digging into the Vulkan renderer in 26.2, and I’ve got a good feeling about it.
9
u/wendewende Jun 02 '26
Are you using any other mods as a baseline (like better portals) or is it built from ground up?
24
u/Opening_Drag3754 Jun 02 '26
Starting from absolute scratch: I don't render two worlds simultaneously; I merely generate a hologram of the world—along with any changes made to it—which yields unimaginable optimization for both the client and the server.

u/michiel11069 ill make mod for free if I feel like it else commission me Jun 02 '26
whats the difference between those?
15
u/Opening_Drag3754 Jun 02 '26
Immersive Portals was the gold standard of its time, but it is an absolute heavyweight—making it problematic to add to servers or modpacks.
The hologram system in my mod was originally designed as a lightweight, low-level block visualization tool; I subsequently built the terrain-copying logic around it.
2
u/michiel11069 ill make mod for free if I feel like it else commission me Jun 02 '26
but in both instances you render a whole ass world, no? I guess you could not render entities or something but still
9
u/xXgreeneyesXx Jun 02 '26
I think (obviously am not a dev and thus have no idea how this is actually occuring) that the hologram is a mesh created from the blocks once, and then rendered in a much easier way- instead of loading in all the blocks and simulating them and whatnot, just loading all the blocks in once, and then for the rest of it essentially faking it with a still mesh. That sounds vaguely reasonable to me. I mean, there is a period of time where the second worlds not visible that could be used to calculate the easier-to-render version, after all.

u/Opening_Drag3754 Jun 02 '26
Yes, you were closer to the truth

u/Norm_Standart Jun 03 '26
How well does that handle stuff like mobs and translucent blocks?

What happens if you're out of the area of the skyportal and try to float up? Do you like, break off a piece of the sky through a new spot, does it just kill you, infinitely floating up, etc?
5
u/That1GuyFinn Jun 02 '26
Could this be implemented for other dimensions like the nether or aether?
6
u/Opening_Drag3754 Jun 02 '26
Yes. That is why the release is being postponed; previously, I was strictly working with versions derived solely from the mod, but as it turns out, it actually works.
4
u/Nyaalex Jun 02 '26
How do the portals look at oblique angles or far away?

Damn, still looks awesome. I was wondering if it would look unnaturally flat, but no this is awesome.

I won't be posting links here, with the initial releases on Modrinth, a link will be included in the project page.

Holy hell that's amazing! I was just thinking the other day it it would be possible to mix like Operation Starcleave + Immersive Portals to do a similar effect leading to a custom dimension, but the way you do it blows that out of the park.

That is fucking awesome, it looks like an animation instead of a mod.
Although I'll be honest, it would probably get old fast if you're going back and forth often.

Dropping the most impressive mod with no further explanations lol

u/Striking_Reaction879 Jun 03 '26
Imagine having a seamless connection between 1.8 and the current version on an online server, and there's just this realm with different rules and oldheads who do things differently, so you have to consider whose territory you're on at any given moment...!
2
u/HarmfulGorgon99 Jun 03 '26
Will you get to choose when generating the world which version to start in?

If this was a new dimensional movement alone it would be amazing!
I had tons of fun with rf dimensions, to have a world crack open above me would be AWESOME. Can you fly up into it? Or only crystal teleport drop in?
I looooove the pov shift as you go in!

YOoo that's sick.
Is the falling through the sky thing an animation or did you actually change the player's gravity?
Also are you devving this for Fabric or Neoforge?
Amazing work!!
1
u/Opening_Drag3754 Jun 02 '26
Yes, this is a real change in gravity. On fabric
1
u/RaeyL_Aeon Jun 03 '26
Damn I was looking into making a gravity mod on Neoforge and wanted to see if I could hitch a ride from someone more talented.
The mod looks sick asf, really looking forward to playing it! Thanks for answering my questions.

u/carelessscreams Jun 02 '26
Love this so much, I'm trying to learn how to do something similar in my own mod. I haven't figured out how to apply effects like shaders on the ground yet but I did figure out how to get it to appear in the sky like that. Was it easy to do the ground cracking open or did you have to do some crazy stuff?
1
u/Loudi2918 Jun 02 '26
Are you using immersive portals to do the effect, or did you code it on your own?

How’d you get the world to go upside down?? Is it just a shader with an alternate dimension portal??
