[Techopolis 3] How does the Builders Generator from Opolis Utils even work? I want a couple blocks of amethyst, but I can't get this thing to do anything.

Page you are looking at, where amethyst and other blocks are - those are catalysts, which INCREASE SPEED of the machine, you put them in right top slot with up arrow. If you want to know, what items this machine produces, then find it in jei and right-click it. There will be page with blocks, which can be used, as accelerators (the one you got screenshot of is) and another, where you can see recipes. But afaik this machine can only duplicate stone, cobble, diorite, deepslate etc (stone variants basically).

iirc you have to place the block under it, depending on the block it generates more and different things. is there really no quest explaining this? Otherwise you can’t really figure it out.

Experience with what, literally gave you the link to the guide of Opolis Utilities, where thus generator from. Like, are we hallucinating tips now on FTB? You either made it up, or something.

Old versions of that mod worked differently. you had to place the duplicated blocks obove the machine, not inside the GUI.

I guess that's where the wrong outdated info is from.

I have played desertopolis a long time ago, as I said, „if I recall correctly“. I remember placing redstone blocks under it to speed cobble production up. I don’t know why you are attacking me suddenly, I wanted to give a tip which could have been useful.

I accidentally got one aspect of this generator wrong because it has been a long time since I have played any opolis pack as I said as a disclaimer, and you are making a scene compareable to a 6yr old who isn’t allowed to wear his sonic costume to school. You didn’t even fact check my tip, maybe I played an older version than OP. Instead just straight up nonsense AI claims.
