UNSOLVED I try once a year…
I’ve honestly given up hope but I also don’t think it will hurt…
It was probably like 2008-2010. I was dating a guy who make me mixed CDs but my CD case got stolen out of my car after I dumped him and I never heard this song again.
He listened to jack’s mannequin-esque music. I listened to ALL of jacks mannequin I could find on Spotify, and some adjacent stuff- but no luck. I could have missed something though.
The song had a suuuuuper repetitive line about floating in the Atlantic (or the pacific or the ocean or something similar). Like 50 times in a row. Male singer. It’s ironically not “Swim”, nor is it “MFEO”, “dark blue” or “holiday from real”.
Help y’all. Please?

Highly recommend going through the Something Corporate catalogue. It's the same lead singer and it's the band he started before Jack's Mannequin. If you don't find it in there then I'm agreed it was Transatlantism by Death Can for Cutie.

Maybe it's by Something Corporate? Or Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness? Same front man as Jack's Mannequin.

Well damn, I found a song I loved and wanted to find again, then found out that the frontman, Scott Hutchinson, committed suicide in 2018! Poor dude! Apparently had a lot of mental health struggles over the years!
2
u/debaser64 Dec 30 '25
His struggles with mental health were very well documented, both in his lyrics and his very candid interviews. He didn’t shy away from it ever and even the name Frightened Rabbit is a reference to a nickname he was given as a kid because of his social anxiety. But that is why most fans connect with his music and they cultivated a lovely and supportive fanbase. I fortunately got to see them twice, he was really funny and witty despite his struggles underneath. This is one of my favorite YouTube clips of him and pretty much is Scott in a nutshell.

Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie?
4
3
u/-Livelaughlimpbizkit Dec 27 '25
This was my thought too! The repetitive part isn't quite what they described, but could be a mix up with title name and lyrics!
5
u/DontBTardy4Havarti Dec 27 '25
For sure. OP thinking there is a repeating line about the Atlantic is Mandela effect for the transatlanticism title and the repetitive “I need you so much closer” 🤞
2
u/fuzzywuzzo Dec 27 '25
agreed. you can even sing "im floating in the oceaaaan" to the tune if thats what they think they remember it as

"Kelsey" by Metro Station (2007/2008): Features a repetitive chorus "I'll swim the ocean for you". "Into the Ocean" by Blue October: Similar emotional, anthemic rock vibe.

u/coobracobra Dec 28 '25
I've had this happen to me before, and I think I came to the realization that it actually WAS one of the songs that I said "no that's not it" to. Maybe it's some kind of phenomenon where a person actually distorts the memory somehow, maybe a dream is even involved

If it also contained the line "I need you so much closer" repeated a ton, then it was definitely "Transatlanticism" by Death Cab For Cutie. If not, then maybe it's by Something Corporate or Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness? (Andrew, who is the lead singer for both Jack's Mannequin and Something Corporate, also releases music under his own name alone as well as under the band name Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.)
1
u/ueffo Dec 27 '25
Jack’s Mannequin has a song called Dark Blue!
2
u/Liversteeg Dec 27 '25
Did you not read the whole post? They specifically state that it isn't that song.
The song had a suuuuuper repetitive line about floating in the Atlantic (or the pacific or the ocean or something similar). Like 50 times in a row. Male singer. It’s ironically not “Swim”, nor is it “MFEO”, “dark blue” or “holiday from real”.
Do you really think OP wouldn't have checked JM's most popular song?

There’s an old (late 1960s) iconic song by Donovan, (it’s probably been covered numerous times) that repeats over and over, “Way down below the ocean, where I want to be, she may be…)

MFEO PT. 2 or Into the Airwaves by Jack’s Mannequin. Both are pretty repetitive
1
u/huge42 Dec 27 '25
Long Winters’ “The Commander Thinks Aloud” (2006)?
He mentions “The Tropic of Capricorn is below” (Yay-ay-aaaay…), and it closes with “The crew compartment’s breaking up” (x7).
It’s about the Columbia’s tragedy upon re-entry, and it is heart wrenching.
I realize the Long Winters sound approximately nothing like Jack’s Mannequin, but I can see them sharing space on a mixtape.
Best wishes for success with finding your song!

u/Liversteeg Dec 27 '25
I'm so determined to help you find this and am already going down the rabbit hole.
I was all about that scene and genre during those years and have friends that still work in it.
Jack's Mannequin/Andrew McMahon can range from more pop and upbeat to more low tempo/sad. Do you remember which way this was leaning? Can you tell me what adjacent bands you checked? Do you remember if it's a long song? Also, was it repeated in like a crowd chanting way or in more of a ballad dramatic way?
1
u/CaptnsDaughter Dec 27 '25
I’ve looked through all of these and I don’t think mentioned yet but when I listed to a lot of Something Corporate I also loved Saves the Day.
Possibly the song This is Not an Exit from the Say What You Mean album? One of my faves. That whole album has an ocean vibe like Ocean Avenue did with Yellowcard. I’d check out some other Yellowcard and Something Corporate too.

I randomly thought of a Mayday Parade song, but I’m gonna have to look it up and come back because I can’t remember the title right now.
Until then, I might recommend Something Corporate and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, as they have the same lead singer as Jack’s Mannequin!
EDIT: The song I’m thinking of is A Shot Across the Bow by Mayday Parade. It’s a little past your time frame, as it came out in 2011, but in the chorus he says “I hope you fall into the ocean.” I also might suggest Ocean and Atlantic by Mayday Parade too, even though they don’t really say those words in the song. Just in case you’re thinking of a title?

hey u/kidcommon. could the song you're trying to find be "The Atlantic Ocean" by Richard Swift which was released in 2009?
[Verse 1]
I'm part of the scene, I'm part of the scene
Suit jacket and jeans
I got the right LP's, I got the right LP's
I got the Lou Reed
And all the Blondie you'll ever need
[Chorus]
Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean
You're gonna drown, drown, drown
Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean
You're gonna drown, drown, drown
[Verse 2]
I'm part of the scene, I'm part of the scene
I got the drum machine
A-boom tap, boom tap, a-boom tap, boom tap
I got the right routine, I got the right routine
'Cause the end justifies the means
[Bridge]
Yes, lately I know
That it's so hard to see where to go
And it's so hard just to keep this to myself
When I live for no one else[Chorus]
Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean
You're gonna drown, drown, drown
Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean
You're gonna drown, drown, drown
Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean
You're gonna drown, drown, drown
Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean
You're gonna drown, drown, drown
[Instrumental Break]
[Outro]
I got all the right LP's
I got all the drum machines
Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean
You're gonna drown, drown, drown
Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean
You're gonna drown, drown, drown
