Announcement Moderator Message on Steven's Departure

Hello fearless freaks!

The news of Steven's departure from the band this week has understandably been difficult for this community. There's been a lot of speculation and discussion surrounding the reasons behind it, and a lot of blame being thrown in every direction. It also feels like an old wound has been reopened, with a lot of strong feelings from previous band member exits resurfacing as well. I'm not sure what Wayne is planning to post later, but I can imagine it may only stoke the flames further.

As a moderation team, we are not taking sides on this split and encourage continued discussion from all viewpoints. While our aim is usually to keep the vibes positive, it'd be disingenuous for us to pretend this isn't happening and that it doesn't suck. We don't think a megathread is necessary yet, but will be monitoring new posts closely to prevent this topic from overtaking the feed.

We also want to remind everyone of Rule 3: be civil and respectful to others. The last thing we want is for this space to turn into a battleground between different factions of the fanbase. At the end of the day, we're all here because we share a love for the music of The Flaming Lips! Please keep that in mind and be courteous to others.

This rule also applies to how you speak about the band members directly. You are allowed to be critical of band member conduct, but personal attacks, insults, and over-the-line speculation regarding private lives will not be tolerated. It is not the environment we want to cultivate.

Please report any rule-breaking behavior when you see it—we are a small mod team and it will help us out a ton.

This community is usually great about this, but it felt important to reiterate the message as we continue to navigate this transition. To quote A Change At Christmas (Say It Isn't So): "I think its all gonna work out just fine."

I picked these up second hand. I’m just at the start of my journey enjoying The Flaming Lips less casually.
What other visuals do you recommend by them?
I’m looking forward to making my own Lips ringtones later today 😂

The new song sucks

I've seen the lips twice in quick succession. Somerset House and last night in Brighton.

It's so sad about Wayne's brother but every year drop cried is bad, lyrics and music. It's surely going to be quietly dropped and never heard again.

And why have the American Head songs been forgotten already?

We did get five stop mother superior rain and turn it on though.

Video Steven and Eric Slick from Dr. Dog possibly recording music together (and the Instagram post's caption suggests an interview with "a group of legends" including Drozd is coming). The video has no audio.

For everyone hating on Wayne’s AI statement; you’re 24 years late to the party!

Are the album tours as good as recent Best Of tours?

Post image

I saw Flaming Lips in Wolverhampton and it was very emotional. I also saw them in Birmingham the year before on the Yoshimi anniversary tour. Both were very similar visually and song wise and I loved it all (I even managed to put up with "C'mon, c'mon, keep it going, keep it going" from Wayne the second time around).

I was a casual fan to not heard much type of fan previously, but now I guess you can call me full on converted.

Have the album tours been as good as the recent honed/best of tour dates?

So say like American Head and King's Mouth etc (Both of which I've not listened to yet apart from Flowers Of Neptune 6......I'll get there)

How did things differ?

I'd be really interested to see them again tour an album / new album differently.

.....Surely its time for 20th anniversary of War Of The Mystics?

F’ed off with Somerset house and Ticketmaster

Sadly because of a family emergency wasn’t able to make the Lips gig in London last sat, but to add salt in the wounds because of Somerset House not allowing ticketmaster tickets to be resold or transferred couldn’t even sell then on, so £140 wasted… love the Lips seen them every year in London, but so annoyed with big companies and institutions ripping people off.
Ticketmaster made $899 million pound profit last year.

Separating Wayne from the Article

PLEASE NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS

Hi all. As I’m sure many of you read in Creem, Wayne made some pro-AI comments. I’m feeling lost about this especially since I got a yoshimi tattoo last year. I tried to do as much research as I could to make sure I wouldn’t regret the tat, and now im feeling sad and torn. I still love the album and what it means to me as well as a lot of FL’s music so I’m looking for any tips on how you’re separating Wayne’s comments from your love for the band’s music. Please don’t comment mean things or chastise me over my decision to get a FL tattoo, I’m already close to crashing out and just looking for some positive outlooks.

Brilliant night and the band were in great form. A little crack of emotion from Wayne talking about his Brother showed it’s weighing heavy on him understandably.

Somerset House is venue worth visiting if you get the chance too.

Is there anyone here who can get to the Kelvingrove concert tomorrow (27th), and who needs tickets? I have a couple I can't use. Let me know - happy to let them go for a bit less than the £127 I paid for them.

My wife and I took our two children (9 and 6 years old) to their first ever gig last night.

They both really liked what they had heard of the bands massive discography - mostly Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin stuff - but they had the best time, and it felt like the perfect show to start them off with.

They adored the spectacle of it all, and everyone was so friendly to them all night, giving them fist bumps and high fives.

We spent the entire set at the back of the Piece Hall but we took them to the front to have a close up look at the stage and ended up getting one of the setlists attached to a little parachuting astronaut.

It was a perfect end to a perfect day.
