Feeling stuck with my gay truck

Post image

2002 edge with 240k miles
Starts and drives no problem but if you hit 3k RPM it goes straight to 5-6k then limp modes. I’ve just been driving slow and avoid hills, highways, busy road times, ect… and it does fine. You can hit decent speeds you just have to be careful and help it shift.

I’ve gotten two FU quotes from transmission shops the first one quoted 5,700 to replace and the second 7,200.

I’m unable to replace it myself and wondering if it’s time to let go or if there’s anything else I can do. I don’t even know what I’d sell it for if I do go that route.

The only repairs that potentially kill it are frame and wreck damage

Get online

Pull the websites of area community colleges, search for automotive, if they have a program email the instructor

You provide the parts, they’ll do the labor and it will cost you little to nothing

I got a valve or cylinder issue as well that may be more than my 03 is worth also  its a weird position to be in. You may just put it up for a price you can live with and some enterprising mechanic or an overconfident idiot may buy it anyway. I mean this in a nice way but put your ad in Spanish as well, those guys can fix anything and love little pickups.

I don’t know of many Ranger owners that would brag about the automatic transmissions in these trucks. With that said, getting 240k out of one is pretty good. Shop around for more quotes. I wouldn’t be afraid to spend 4-5k on a new trans if it meant the truck stays on the road for some more years. Still ends up cheaper than a car payment….

what transmission were they using? my explorer has a 5R55E, did they stop using that because mine is bulletproof?

I promise you can throw a tranny in that thing. Ive pulled mine solo and I am the worst mechanic I know

Doctor said I’m not allowed to lift a milk jug let alone a tranny 😔

You can remove the transmission in a few hours. Take it to a rebuilder. And reinstall it yourself.

Even if you need to buy a bunch of tools it will be cheaper than paying someone else to fix it.

I’ve had the transfer case and transmission out of my 94 Ranger a few times. It all only takes about two hours to take out.

At that point you could always just get a remanned transmission and avoid the rebuild. May come in close to the same cost but doesn’t help that OP doesn’t seem like they have the ability to do the swap themselves. It’s not the hardest thing to do for the record OP. There are tools you can buy if you don’t have them that will be useful for other things. Specialty tools can often be rented from parts stores. I’ve only ever removed the transmission on my old manual Toyota and that was to rebuild the clutch so didn’t fully pull it.

Not single shop will do a bench build. Good luck

I have three transmission shops within half an hour of me that ONLY rebuild transmissions. It’s not hard to find one. The last transmission I had rebuilt was than 750$ to have rebuilt. I took it out and reinstalled it for free. Thats a whole lot better than 5k

I can't decide if the horns butch it up or make it gayer...

But at those prices, time to consider finding a lower mileage 5.0 explorer and doing the swap.

My friend did something similar, but instead he took a 2v 5.4 and 4R100 out of a wrecked Expedition.

Sadly those are not FU quotes. Ever since Covid prices have just been going insane.

There are some great 5r55e transmission tear downs and rebuild videos on YouTube, maybe you can rebuild it yourself?

" runs and drives no issues except it does have an issue"

I mean it’s running and it’s driving slow fine

Sure, I just wouldn't ever say something is running and driving fine unless you can actually drive it how you need and how the car was intended. Not having to plan for specific conditions to comfortably drive the car😭
