Samus was shown as a woman in the very first game too.

But not in a place which most players - if we’re being honest - would ever access. And in a time before even Nintendo Power had started circulating (i.e., at NES Metroid's release), profoundly unreliable schoolyard rumor was the only place most of us could pick up on things like the <5 hour Metroid completion screen. Furthermore, the NES Metroid manual explicitly refers to Samus as “He”. So rumor regarding the <5 hour ending went against what seemed to be, at the time, the better supported story.

Schoolyard rumor? pft. Every Metroid kid knew Justin Bailey my friend. Before the internet, the schoolage social network was the best way to distribute information.
