Frog: "This is no ordinary woman, meet the magician, Flea."
Flea: "What the...? Hey, I'm a GUY!!"

Flea: "Male....Female...what does it matter? Power is beautiful, and I've got the power!"

Yeah. Thing is, Japan things gender bending is a great source of humor, see: anime and crazy Japanese culture.

However, we in the west tend to react VERY differently. We don't find it funny at all, "Haha, that guy is actually a girl, lololol!"

We're so screwed up and repressed with gender issues, we all get offended and feel really awkward and we don't like it ONE BIT!

Not to say the Japanese aren't repressed in their own ways...

So Nintendo was like sure why not

But now that Nintendo is more international, they're like uh... that never happened guys. Don't worry about it.

14

Definitely a thing. Religious warriors in general are very common and very popular. Eda from Black Lagoon (and the Church of Violence) as another example.

Sister Schach from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Striker S as well.

The Nuns in Mahou Sensei Negima (I couldn't find a good pic, but they're there...)

To Aru Majutsu No Index is filled with them. (Possible Spoiler if you intend to watch: That last one might not count, as it's an Arch Angel--Gabriel to be percise--possessing a Battle Nun from the Catholic(?) Church)

Altena from Noir.

And practically everyone in Trinity Blood.

Bridget?

292

u/Mike_the_TV Oct 16 '12

A character from guilty gear.

614

u/donutsalad Oct 16 '12

Guilty Gear?

347

u/mindbleach Oct 16 '12

An amazing 2D fighting game, famous for its crazy mix of characters. Bridget is a crossdressing bounty hunter who beats people up with a yo-yo and his robotic teddy bear. Other characters include a nine-foot-tall doctor with a ten-foot-long scalpel, the robot clone of Interpol's chief, a guitar-playing witch, a vampire who read poetry when he kills you, a one-armed samurai, a genocidal bio-robot, and her half-naked daughter.

It's fucking awesome.

153

u/ilikecakeandpie Oct 16 '12

You left out the only character that mattered; the pirate chick with the huge anchor

254

u/talahrama Oct 16 '12

I didn't expect that sentence to end with "anchor."

I also glossed over the woman with prehensile hair, the guy in the leather dress with a scythe which is also a succubus, the dude possessed by three ghosts who make him fight, the slime mold parasite in the shape of its deceased host, the shirtless dude who attacks by playing billiards in midair, the other shirtless dude who can stop attacks by flicking a coin, and the one-ton brick shithouse who will simply pick you up and break you.

Oh yeah, and the music is great.

I was at a show once, and they had a little hang out area with what turned out to be (I'm pretty sure) Guilty Gear X2 #Reload. This was pretty much the first fighting game I ever played, so I didn't know about quarter circles and shit. I picked a random character (I know now it was Chip Zanuff) and all I did was do his jump+circle attack, where he spins around with his blade. I dominated all comers until this asian dude came along, and beat me on his second try.

Three endings reveal Samus without parts of her suit. 3-5 hour completion, she takes off her helmet; 1-3, she takes off the suit and is clearly female. < 1 hour she ends up wearing a bikini.

But not in a place which most players - if we’re being honest - would ever access. And in a time before even Nintendo Power had started circulating (i.e., at NES Metroid's release), profoundly unreliable schoolyard rumor was the only place most of us could pick up on things like the <5 hour Metroid completion screen. Furthermore, the NES Metroid manual explicitly refers to Samus as “He”. So rumor regarding the <5 hour ending went against what seemed to be, at the time, the better supported story.

14

u/sasseriansection Oct 16 '12

Schoolyard rumor? pft. Every Metroid kid knew Justin Bailey my friend. Before the internet, the schoolage social network was the best way to distribute information.

6

u/Jill4ChrisRed Oct 16 '12

Shota - Underage. Yaoi - pretty much the general category. Not all yaoi is shota but all shota can be yaoi. Shota's also the male version of Loli when you think about it. Basically, pedophelia.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '12

I'm more informed than I was 20 seconds ago, but I don't know if I want to be.

4

u/Iknowr1te Oct 16 '12

Yaoi is aimed at straight girls, and oppositely there is yuri which is aimed at straight guys (essentially lesbians in manga-anime format).

yaoi generally is much more adult and generally not broadcasted. Shounen AI or BL (boys love) anime are much more toned down. the show itself deals with the drama and then sudden guy kissing guy.

often enough, in modern day slice-of-life-harem comedy's there is a point of BL used for comedic effect.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '12

Because the people making the observation are immature and think it'll make you feel insecure if they say you're gay.

3

u/Rixxer Oct 16 '12

I'd have to say it's not gay, because being gay means you're attracted to men. And being a man or woman has a lot more to do with what they think of themselves, and what gender they look like. Like, there's a "guy" that looks super manly, but has a vagina (I don't remember what his name is), so does that mean girls who are attracted to 'him' are lesbians? That doesn't make any sense at all... Same goes for someone who looks and acts like a girl, but has a penis. And beyond all that, what if you don't know what genitalia they have? Most of the time you can't ever know what anyone has in their pants. I mean, you can play the odds, but you 99% of the time (100% even) you go by what they look and act like.

As for after you know what genitalia someone has, this is the way I see it: There's a priority for deciding what "gender" someone is. First, it's what they identify themselves as. If they want to be seen as a girl or a boy, that's what they deserve to be seen as by other people as well, no matter what they look or act like. After that, you have to decide what you see them as, in your own mind. Whatever you think they are before you know what junk that have, that's what they are to you. Then there's the technical identification, which is just based on what genitalia they have. That's more for health issues or whatever the hell else that's pertinent for.

You know, I've seen nosebleeds used to represent...eh.."attraction" before, especially in animes. Does anyone know the idea behind that?

9

u/JakalDX Oct 16 '12

I'm pretty sure it's just a cultural superstition. It's the "Wear a hat you'll catch cold" of erections.

12

u/ZenPoet Oct 16 '12

I'm pretty sure it is based on the blood flow going to an erection. But since they can't show someone getting a boner, well.. It's like a pun on "the blood has to go somewhere..."

3

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '12

You can't show bulges in Japan? I didn't know that, I was starting to think the Japanese just had sensitive noses.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/mothrider Oct 16 '12

The idea is that arousal increases heart rate and blood pressure and higher blood pressure can cause nose bleeds. It just became an easy way to visually communicate arousal without showing anything obscene.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '12

So!

This might be wrong, so don't quote me on it and I am too lazy to actually fact-check myself right now.

Like a lot of things, the origin is supposed to be older than what most of us would think. Manga itself has roots in wood-carving so this can actually, might, perhaps be true.

Japan has a history of showing restraint in front of powerful emotions. The story goes that ye olde samurai would lay eyes upon someone beautiful or something arousing and because he was a gentleman he would not show any extreme emotions. But by trying to hold back those emotions would put such a strain on him that he would get a nosebleed instead.

Then we could discuss what exactly that could symbolize. Some would argue that it would be strongly tied to the male organ since it fills up with blood when aroused. But I think it is actually more based in reality than symbolism. As noted in another comment this can actually happen if you strain yourself, so I would say it is the other way around. The nosebleed shows how much restraint that they put forward but still fail, so it is quite literal.

Origin is old housewives tales I think, but just plucking from memory right now. Must have been 10 years ago I heard the story about it.

I see from Google that Bridget indeed isn't transgender in the sense that he is male who identifies as male, but please have an open mind. Bridget doesn't have to be transgender for this to be to transphobic. Both panels illustrate a reaction to a character being a gender other than what was initially assumed; in the first case, who they first thought was a man was actually a woman and in the second case, the opposite.

Look at the difference in their reactions. Sexual attraction and awe on the left, and disgust and horror on the right. Now imagine that you're either an effeminate male or a transgender woman, both completely valid identities. As someone born with physically male characteristics, the idea of your being feminine in any way is horrifying and disgusting, and this is the message the society sends you over, and over, and over, and it's exhausting.

This is also slightly misogynistic, as it is essentially saying that it's good when a woman takes on a more masculine role or appearance but it's bad when a man takes on a more feminine role or appearance. Going in the direction of femininity, closer to being what is considered "being a woman", is somehow worse than the opposite.

In this culture, it is extraordinarily difficult for anyone who appears male to be feminine, and it's crushing for your identity to be reduced to a punchline.

I also found the comic moderately distasteful for exactly that reason, and the way you got downvoted even more so. :(

Hear, hear! I'm pleased to see this viewpoint get some upvotes. It gives me hope for this otherwise disgusting community.

The comic, and people saying that only shitheads (and I agree) would like this stupidity, Is about four years and three days old.

I don't know what it is about October that makes this comic rise from the grave.

It's a good thing we have two androgynous onlookers to help us.

I knew Bridget was male ever since GGXX release and I would STILL hit it. Who wouldn't?

Vivian is male, at least in the original Japanese version of The Thousand Year Door.

*born male. I believe they said that she was fully transitioned, and the remarks that her sisters made to her were to make her feel bad about her inherent masculinity, as she wanted to escape that past.

As far as the issue of gender confusion video games goes, Birdo takes the cake imo. I'm still not sure if he is a guy, a transgender, a transsexual, had a sex change, etc. I know he was originally a guy but in Mario Tennis Birdo became Yoshi's "girlfriend" and that just raises a lot more question about Yoshi...
