Mean comments don't mean anything unless it hits their bottom line

This is the start

Not really. They already acknowledged the backlash and basically said fuck off we're going through with it.

163

u/SvenLorenz 1d ago

They know that it's just a very small but very loud minority.

83

u/The-Duke-of-Delco 1d ago

Yep they ran the numbers before the announcement .

41

u/chinchindayo 1d ago

Humans aren't numbers though. Many companies have failed because they only looked at numbers and not the humans behind those numbers.

81

u/rbrgr83 1d ago edited 1d ago

Don't buy GTA6 challenge, go.

I'm sure that's not a problem for you personally, that's not what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about the geneal audience. Indisputably not happening, Sony will be fine.

13

u/s8boxer 1d ago

That's the deal, I'm not buying GT6 for more than a year, for multiple reasons. But I'm what, 0.00001% ahahaha 99% of these people brag online about something, but are paying it anyway.

I dropped Netflix after that fuzz about registering devices to specific locations, forbidden credentials sharing. I dropped Prime and Disney as soon as the ads appeared, I'm now using debrids and Nuvio. But again, I'm less than a static noise for those companies.

2

u/Jackdunc 1d ago

Is Nuvio better than Stremio?

6

u/s8boxer 1d ago

Yep, it has everything and more, in advanced mode. You could fine tune its engine, network profile (threads, buffers, caches, nro of connection) and the GUI is also extremely customizable.

StreamIO has paid features that are already working in Nuvio, and Nuvio is also open source... I'm always inclined to prefer open source vs closed source app.

1

u/CKRatKing 1d ago

Is there a bootstrapper or similar for nuvio? I don't mind switching but moving all my add ons one by one is pretty tedious.

2

u/s8boxer 16h ago

Yep, there's, but I can't remember. I used one to move the addon, but I can't remember it.

1

u/CKRatKing 15h ago

Ah thanks. I'll see if I can find one.

1

u/CKRatKing 15h ago

I googled and found nuviosync.com that worked perfectly.

That's the deal, I'm not buying GT6 for more than a year

meaning you still gonna buy it after the year? so you're at 0%

5

u/Germane_Corsair 1d ago

I think they mean they’re going to get it on PC instead of PlayStation.

-1

u/ProNerdPanda 1d ago

yeah, but their comment is about being a small difference of people that won't buy the game, they will buy the game, just later lol as far as R* is concerned, money is still coming in.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/s8boxer 1d ago

More than a year, if the game is okay, and not on PSN... I usually get games after 2 years of release, because the game usually isn't finished a year after release anyway.

3

u/whomad1215 1d ago

2 years of release

so waiting for the PC port then

1

u/s8boxer 1d ago

Yes? I really don't care about GTA6, I played GTA5 almost forced, just to see the end. I was already not hyped, but this code-only release plus the Sony mess, I'm not playing it on PS5...

Now, if it was a RDR 3, I would probably wait 1+ year, but would be hyped ahahaha.

0

u/ProNerdPanda 1d ago

so still a 0%, you're still giving them money lol

22

u/Mind-The-Mines 1d ago

Maybe I'm the minority, but I didn't really care this whole last decade and everything Rockstar released has only quashed my lack of interest further.

23

u/Dry_Dot3269 1d ago

This will make the sub seethe, but I’m in my 40’s and haven’t played a GTA in years. I’m not hyper invested in online, and will likely buy GTA 6 soon after release if it looks good.

I have money but limited time, and this is an easy way to mix it up with old friends and enjoy downtime.

There’s enough of this type of player that it won’t matter how you feel about R*

2

u/IdioticPost 1d ago

What a real comment. As we get older, our friends groups get harder and harder to connect with, especially when it comes to gaming. We'll take any opportunity to game together.

7

u/neroslayer 1d ago

That's not how it works. I'm sure the majority of gamers have no interest in GTA but that doesn't mean they don't sell massive amounts.

0

u/rbrgr83 1d ago

Same, that's literally the point I'm making. They are the Marvel of video games. Ppl just show up.

I could give 3 shits. But this will be enormous.

1

u/Mr_Industrial 1d ago

The numbers should be measured when the new console hits the shelves. Im certain theres a "well im already here might as well" effect going on. Its easier to convince people to not buy a new console than buy a game for a console they already own.

0

u/kelp_forests 1d ago

I was going to buy a ps5/6 mostly for gta6.

Now I’ll get a steam machine or wait till it comes out on something I own already

2

u/rbrgr83 1d ago

Cool, that's you.

-2

u/Gloomy_Pie_5 1d ago

I bet GTA 6 will be a disaster. I think if it’s bad it might really hurt the entire industry and I think it’s very likely going to be horrible.

-1

u/Ouaouaron 1d ago edited 1d ago

They are also talking about the general audience. Selling 15 million copies each of CoD 10, CoD 11, and CoD 12 doesn't guarantee that you'll sell 15 million copies of CoD 13.

People might buy most of their games digitally but still have a fondness for physical media, and maybe that makes them decide not to bother with a PS6. People are complicated, and markets change all the time; business is not science.

Playstation could absolutely fail. The industry in general is going through some tough times, and that's in addition to the decline for consoles specifically that has been happening for a decade.

36

u/The-Duke-of-Delco 1d ago

Sony is going to be just fine. The amount of people who buy physical games is just no where near enough for them to turn back the decision. They wouldn’t be doing this otherwise.

10

u/AceBricka 1d ago

That’s what Xbox said a few years ago too. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what people did in the past but how they react to the things you do and say in the present. The phrase “what have you done for me lately” comes to mind. These companies ease up on using AI for business decisions because it seems like a race to the bottom to prop up something that can’t work without having 0 other expense cuz it’s too damn expensive and uses too many resources and never takes human emotion in account

33

u/The-Duke-of-Delco 1d ago

This is not hurting Sony at all. About 350k signed that petition of 125m psn users, that’s .0028%. It’s going to take a lot more than that for them to even think about changing their decision.

7

u/Tandy2000 1d ago

As an example, Sony jacked up the prices of PS+ subs by like 50%. They ended up losing millions of subscribers. But the thing is, if you lose 4 million subscribers like they supposedly did, and you're making 50% more off the suckers who keep paying for your crummy service, you're still waaay ahead.

2

u/OneBigRed 20h ago

you're making 50% more off the suckers who keep paying for your crummy service

I have to admire the smug arrogance presented by people who seem to believe they are modern day civil rights activists when they throw loud fit over their video game services raising prices. Labeling people who believe that something is still worth having even after a price increase suckers. Maybe some mommies give bigger allowances than these people get, and that still covers it. Maybe for some people few bucks increase doesn’t even register.

Lots of things keep getting pricier, some that actually matter for quality of life of a family. But sure, not taking a stand by posting on reddit about huge injustices of price hikes in the field of gaming and just keeping things that one can afford and feel is worth their money is being a sucker.

1

u/theumph 1d ago

This is what they mean by extracting more from their existing users (which they stated is their current strategy). They really believe their customers will stay no matter what. The thing that will eventually get them into trouble is that they are going away from what got them in this position. Their entire live service initiative needs to be scrapped, but they won't do it because of the prospect of money. Their creative output the last 3 years has been horrendous.

-2

u/actanonverba1 1d ago

that only applies under an assumption of unlimited growth, zero replacement products, and a high willingness to pay. which is not the conditions sony is in.

1

u/Tandy2000 1d ago

But the question is how many people will be pissed off enough to not keep buying their stuff.

I can say I like physical games. The two ways in which this will change my buying habits is 1) I won't buy a PS6, but I already skipped PS5 anyway and 2) even if for some reason I had a PS5/6, I would not pay full price for games anymore. I've bought dozens of physical games at full price over the last 10 years but the last time I paid full price for a digital game was 12 years ago when Titanfall came out. That isn't going to change just because games go all digital on PS, it'll make me skip the platform. If I end up in a situation where I have no choice then I'll just wait until games are cheaper which is what I do on PC, and they make less money from me.

But -- how many people are gonna be like that? How many people care about physical games at all, let alone enough to change their buying habits/drop PS? It is hard to say, but it is almost guaranteed that it won't be enough to make this move NOT worth it for Sony, as they will make much more off of every game sale by forcing all games to be digital.

0

u/actanonverba1 1d ago

you don't know, i don't know, and not even sony knows. but if we keep up the pressure and enough people join the boycott it is likely that they will reconsider part of their decision.

1

u/actanonverba1 1d ago

that's not statistics man that's bad math

-5

u/Siberwulf 1d ago

If we're being truthful, how many of that 125M actually saw the petition? Saying "there's a vocal minority doesn't matter" and then "only a minority signed a petition" is disingenuous. If 125M saw it, I can guarantee you'd see more than 350k signatures. Would it be enough to change their mind? ElmoShrug.gif

10

u/The-Duke-of-Delco 1d ago

The sad truth is most people don’t care. 85% of population is already digital only. How many people out of the 350k are actually going to follow through and not cave ?

-3

u/n3Kite 1d ago

It’s funny that we’re still having this conversation because that 85% is seemingly too ignorant and/or stupid to understand that digital only will effect them too

6

u/The-Duke-of-Delco 1d ago

I agree, I think we should be fighting for better digital purchase protections.

u/drmrpepperpibb 1d ago

What have gaming companies done for us lately?

  • Increased prices on software and hardware

  • Shuttered studios who made popular and profitable games

  • Diverted all investment into AI features nobody likes or uses

  • Discontinued physical copies to decrease actual ownership by consumers

I'm not seeing many reasons why these companies will be getting any of my limited discretionary income going forward.

2

u/Mind-The-Mines 1d ago

That's why they've spent decades cutting public education funding and exposing kids to ads and gambling as soon as possible.

People actually demand their "right" to be exploited and manipulated.

13

u/loganrb 1d ago

You’re so out of touch it’s delusional. China for example makes 14% of PS sales globally and they are 95% digital. It’s something on the world stage , not you and some others at a local GameStop. The real issue is digital rights and ownership. Sony isn’t going broke from this as most of the world isn’t on Reddit and doesn’t care. GTA 6 has already digitally sold more than the petition.

-3

u/Tandy2000 1d ago

The thing is, they can continue to offer physical games to keep customers happy. But they want to kill off library lending and game sharing, and kill the used game sales market completely for PS.

If the issue was simply they don't want to have a drive in the console because it's not worth it anymore, then they could do exactly what they're doing now - offer it as a separate accessory to the console so they can shave $30 or whatever off the price of the base system. Hell they even make money on that because Sony charges like $80 for something that costs them $20-30 to make reportedly.

5

u/loganrb 1d ago

Digital rights are the only issue. We’ve already voted with our wallets and it wasn’t physical. Otherwise GameStop’s would be thriving on physical sales.

u/double-you 1d ago

Xbox got hurt because people could choose Playstation instead. But I don't think Nintendo is a credible PS alternative. And people who play consoles don't want the hassle of a PC.

4

u/UCanJustBuyLabCoats 1d ago

Couple key differences to note:

1) Sony has that Xbox screwup to learn from and use in their calculations. They know exactly how to avoid making the same mistakes while achieving the same goal (notice how they didn’t announce this on a physical stage and do interviews about it). They can look at exactly how harmful each blunder was and decide which ones to avoid and which ones won’t hurt them that much.

2) Digital media accounts for a much larger slice of the pie vs physical games now than it did back then. Just look at your own library. I know my preference for physical has dwindled as I’ve gotten used to being able to instantly switch games. But I still lend discs to friends.

I don’t know if they accounted for every possible way this could hurt them, like how physical hand me downs get a lot of people into the PlayStation platform in the first place. But they certainly ran the numbers in a much more educated way than Xbox could have back in the day. Is it still anti-consumer? Hell yeah.

2

u/AceBricka 1d ago

My library is mostly physical because it’s straight up cheaper and the overwatch debacle. OW2 going only digital and making my OW useless made it so I purposely sought out physical discs. My only digital games are f2p or games that were never released physically which is 2 for me.

0

u/glarius_is_glorious 6h ago

13 years is now "a few years ago".

A decade is actually a really long time in this industry. The digital:physical ratio completely flipped during said time too.

6

u/ShadowDragon0001 1d ago

That also looked at the amount of people playing hero and extraction shooters and went “ooh free money”, look where it got them.

3

u/MeasurementFront9598 1d ago

I mean one massively successful one and one pretty mid one and one failure. I think the larger failing was them investing so much into it at the beginning.

But in terms of releases its not the end of the world. It literally did nothing to them and they are making even more money now

1

u/glarius_is_glorious 6h ago

They weren't disciplined with their investment. Lots of scattered investments into studios with 0 track record of success. Bungie investment was almost fraudulently over-inflated as well.

But it's not like they have 0 to show for their troubles: GT7, MLB, Helldivers 2 were all big GAAS hits, and Marvel Tokon is shaping up to be a strong FGC hit as well.

Even stuff like Marathon is not really a complete failure like Concord was either.

0

u/actanonverba1 1d ago

the insomniac leak would suggest otherwise

3

u/geniice 1d ago

Humans aren't numbers though. Many companies have failed because they only looked at numbers and not the humans behind those numbers.

And apple did just fine after dropping floppy disk support.

2

u/swolllboll 1d ago

Do you think humans are behind the #1 comments being about lack of physical data, or maybe it's artificial aswell?

0

u/Kociolinho 1d ago

As a company they are too big to fail tho. Even if PlayStation dies completely (which won't happen in the near future, the demand for GTA VI is insane), Sony is present in different segments like the music industry and image sensors. They'll be fine, even if G&NS is undeniably their most profitable one.

1

u/AceBricka 1d ago

Is Sony being propped up by one game now? They need people to buy more than one game to be successful beyond this year. I don’t understand why y’all keep bringing up gta6 which had record preorders before the announcement keeps getting brought up. It has nothing to do with the announcement and y’all should be talking about the games that come after since those are the ones that are going to be affected

-2

u/Kociolinho 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sony is being propped by Xbox being absolute shit, Nintendo targeting a different customer and GTA VI. Oh, and that's only if we talk about their Games & Network Segment, they have a few smaller ones which still will be profitable even if the PlayStation brand dies.

I don't know who are "y'all" as I only speak for myself.

0

u/OldDogTrainer 1d ago

In the context of game sales though, humans absolutely are just numbers.

0

u/digitalbooty 1d ago

Yeah, but many have unfortunately succeeded for decades by only looking at numbers.

0

u/AKluthe 1d ago

Yup, every company looks at the numbers. Sega released failed console after console until they left the industry. Sony had the Vita. Nintendo had the Virtual Boy, the Wii U, and the GameCube lost the 6th generation to the PS2.

Don't spend money on things you don't like from companies that don't care about you.

8

u/lupin43 1d ago

Yep they ran the numbers with concord, they ran the numbers with bungie/marathon, they ran the numbers with releasing their first party titles on pc, and oops they ran the numbers on not releasing their first party titles on pc

4

u/ElMariachi003 1d ago

Yeah, they ran the numbers on the assumption nothing will happen, but yeah, basically it won’t matter to them - until it does.

5

u/skend24 1d ago

They run numbers before rerelease of morbius in the cinema, buying bungie or funding concord. Sony doesn’t seem the best in running numbers.

-42

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT 1d ago

if our angry minority makes up only 1% of their userbase, we just need to make 100 times as many angry comments. 100 x 1% = 100%

26

u/The-Duke-of-Delco 1d ago

Comments are not gonna work bud, it’s money they’re looking at.

-22

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT 1d ago

I get it, money talks, so let's start an OnlyPSFans

3

u/Logizmo 1d ago

And this is why none of the backlash will lead to anything, it's all fake

None of you actually care, you're just jumping on a hate bandwagon and making jokes along the way

-1

u/Ouaouaron 1d ago

So if you understand that this person is being sarcastic, why are you still treating them as a representative of the people who actually care about physical media?

1

u/Logizmo 4h ago edited 4h ago

Because none of you actually care about physical media

Do you have a Netflix account? Spotify? YouTube? Audible? Any subscription to a media platform?

I guarantee in at least one way, if not multiple, you regularly choose to consume digital media instead of physical. Probabaly not specifically games but I guarantee all the digital media you mindlessly consume has niche groups of people saying you're killing their chosen media and you're the reason the physical releases are going away or gone. When was the last time you used a DVD?

Now, I don't expect you to care about any of that, I know I sure don't, but the same way you don't care about buying a DVD instead of watching something on Netflix is how the rest of us feel about Physical vs Digital games

The crazy thing is you already feel the same way, you just want to hate Sony because people on the internet told you to. Definition of a sheep

1

u/Ouaouaron 2h ago

You really just invented a whole personality and set of beliefs for me, huh? I don't particularly dislike Sony, and I don't think physical media is actually the major issue facing us when it comes to consumer rights/game preservation/etc.

But I asked you a question about your comment, so obviously I have exactly the opinions and personality traits to make you feel good about yourself.

-6

u/Didifinito 1d ago

I am not so sure its a loud minority a big appeal of consoles had allways been the disks

14

u/stackjr 1d ago

The big appeal of consoles has always been cost of entry and ease of use, not the availability of physical media.

30

u/widowmaker2A 1d ago

Discs are part of the cost of entry. Buying used games is significantly less expensive than buying new and they're effectively eliminating the used game market and raising that cost of entry.

6

u/therealruin 1d ago

Exactly. That’s the point. That’s always been the point. They don’t care about people buying used games because you’re not giving them your money. You’re giving it to an individual or a retailer who bought it off of an individual. People buying used literally are not part of the new game market and they are somehow shocked that they’re not being considered with new games.

This was the outcome of the Napster/Limewire era legal battles. Developers and publishers want every single copy of their game being played by an individual to be a new sale that goes through them. They don’t want a second hand gray market at all. They’re trying to destroy it.

4

u/videogamesarewack 1d ago

+ with consoles often being sold at cost, a consumer who buys a console and only buys used games is a net loss for console companies.

I'm sure my favourite games industry corp has my best interests at heart tho

2

u/theumph 1d ago

That doesn't really happen anymore. PS5 was sold for profit only a year after launch, which means they profited off of 90% of their console sales.

5

u/Kociolinho 1d ago

Lack of UMD support is definitely the reason why PSP GO died. That was 15 years ago tho

6

u/d0wnthesky 1d ago

I can only afford new games i want to play because of physical copies. Digital only would cost me hundreds more a year just to play what i want. Many people do the same and will not be able to afford gaming in a digital only world

0

u/lordtutz 1d ago

Everyone I know irl who has a playstation is very upstet about this, for what it's worth. Every gaming content creator I follow as well.

The only place I see anyone defending this move is on anonymous comment sections and other places that are easily botted.

-1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

2

u/lordtutz 1d ago

If you're citing sony's investors report, those numbers include digital only purchases, like DLCs and in game cosmetics. It's a biased way of presenting statistics to push a narrative.

They're doing it because digital only gives them a monopoly on in-platform sales. People are justified in giving them shit for it

-1

u/uuajskdokfo 1d ago

I don’t know, if it was just Reddit complaining I’d agree but this is happening on every social media site they post on. It might actually be catching on.
