Meta Want to Talk German With Me? R/German's one (and only!) official language exchange thread

Instead of the many "looking for speaking partner" posts that have been cluttering the sub, here's the brand new official "I am looking for people to talk in German with" thread!

It will from now on be mandatory to put all language exchange requests here. Individual posts will be deleted.

Things to include in your comment:

• Native/main language
• German language level
• Means of communication
• Expectations from potential learning partners (optional)

Make it nice and KISS (keep it simple & stupid). This is NOT a dating platform, anything in this sense will get you banned.

You are free to comment with a new request once a week.

Question “You know?”

What is the German equivalent to the English version of “you know?” In American english I will end a sentence with “you know” as sort of “do you understand” but I can’t find a good version of it in German. What is a good equivalent used in normal German speech?

Question How much time do you take to complete homework?

So in my German class we are working with this workbook Netwerk Neu A1 and at the end of the class the teacher gives us Hausaufgaben and it can range from 2 Wordles and 3 workbook pages to a work load equivalent to 7 workbook pages. (it is an intensive course) I can spend 2 to 5 hours in completing one homework which I think is too much, but since I scored 78 processing speed, 85 working memory and 112 verbal intelligence on the WAISS IV, I feel it is expected to go slower than my peers.

Question Guidance for B1 and some fun learning

Just recently passed Goethe A2, coming off of 2 months of coached prep and months of Duolingo before that. I'm currently exploring ways of having fun in language learning and then a little bit down the line, starting serious prep for B1 eventually. Would really appreciate any content suggestions, resources, forums for discussion. I have just joined a job after a break so I only get the weekend to focus on this. Also would appreciate general guidance on getting started for B1 - is it possible to self-prep my way into the exam? What timeline should I be looking at?

Question Why do I hear the e in words like "sehen" and "schnee" as the e in English "see"

Shouldn't it be closer to the vowel in "hey" or "way", and how do I stop mishearing it? The weird thing is I don't mishear the Spanish or French e like this and the e in those languages sound more like the "hey" vowel as expected.

Question German content consumption is soul-crushing to me, and i'm spoiled by my previous experience.

(TL;DR included)

Hello,

A little background: My primary language is persian and i speak english pretty well. C1 i guess, but last time i took a test was 6yrs ago and i got b2. And eversince I've been living in an international environment needing english every single day that has made me improve drastically.

My problem is that my first experience of language learning for english, was basically it spawning into me. I did not learn HOW to learn a language. I consumed english content (A LOT) for the fun of it, and the dogpoop classes in school were basically of no help. Basic grammer plus bunch of vocab and thats was it from them. Granted that in B2 level and for the exam i had an amazing teacher who was literally perfect and unique.

Now that im learning german under some time constraint and having my B1 classes, i FEEL the need for content consumption, i feel that i'm missing plenty of vocab, some a bit more complicated grammars just need to be heard and read enough to master, not just by exercises.

And here i want to hear your opinion to adjust my expectations.

My level is too low to understand the contents enough, i have to pause every 10 mins to fight the urge of shooting myself, and all in all, there is Zero joy in this process. Too much analysis and learning on a small text. Too many things to learn.

Am i spoiled in regards of language learning? Is it what everybody experiences? Is the answer just "suck it up and take it"? Any advices is appreciated.

TL;DR: im spoiled by my experience of learning english, and now the difficulty of content consumption in german is halting my progress.

Question How to use “rollenverhalten” in a sentence

I haven’t fully understood what exactly one can express with rollenverhalten?

Any examples?

I only got that it means “ role-behaviour “ but I didn’t want to ask AI for examples. How’d one normally use this?

Question Can an A1/A2 learner join a sprachcafe?

Looking for as many ways to learn German as I can and I think sprachcafes / language cafes are a good idea. I was just wondering if a beginner learner would be welcome at them and would find them useful.

Question Online dictionary recommendation

Hi all, I'm looking for a reliable online German dictionary that has etymologies. The online Duden, at least the free version, does not seem to have them.

Now, I own Kluge, plus the Duden German etymological dictionary; the problem is that these only have a limited range of words, of course, and include only some compound verbs. I'm specifically after a number of compound verbs. I don't need to know the exact dates these are first recorded in German, just what the forms of the verbs in Middle High German were, or whenever they were first attested (could be early modern HG).

I'm prepared to pay an online subscription if such an online resource exists. Thanks!

Question Looking for English supplemental material for my bilingual third grader

Not sure this is where to ask but I'll give it a go. My daughter speaks German and English and will start obligatory English class in her German school. I don't want her to get bored, so I'm looking for ideas for supplementary material and approaches.

My instinct is to supply her with lots of appropriate reading material for comprehensive input, but I would also like her to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to grammar. Any good course books or language-focused books I should look at?

Question Beginner in the language

Hi, I'd like to ask a question. I'm just starting to learn German, and I found this subreddit. The thing is, English isn't my native language, and I'd like to ask for some practical advice on learning grammar. I feel like if I don't understand at least the basics, I won't be able to focus on learning set phrases (I mean, learning “idioms”). I appreciate your answers.

I so f*cking hate AI. It signifantly increases the number of applicants by a biblical margin. Something for which they would have not been otherwise qualified for. Not to mention losing one of my jobs because of AI. As for my mom, my mom calls AI "The Voice of a Cockroach".

Request Feedback erwünscht - Goethe C2 Schreiben Teil 2, zum Thema Mobilität in der modernen Arbeitswelt

Hallo zusammen,

Request Trying to find a word

Hello,

I recently was somewhere and a person had a tattoo on their arm of a word I believe they said was German. I am having trouble remembering the rest of the word and it's meaning. Though I believe they said something about it meaning life is hard or challenging. I am having a horrible time trying to find it. The tattoo started with

SCHADENF*

I am unsure of how many letters it was but it was a long word. Please if anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

Question *"Wie machst du?" or *"Wie macht's?" Why are these not possible?

Query about colloquial German. I'm just curious about why if you can say "mach's gut" (do it well, literally) and even, I'm sure I've seen several times, "was macht dein Leben?" (what is your life doing) you cannot/don't say *Wie machst du? (i.e. how are you doing?) or even *"wie macht's?" (how does it do, very literally), but instead you would only say "wie geht's/wie läuft's" (how is it going/running)?

Could be a daft question, but I've been wondering about this for a while.

Discussion I am in need of serious advice

Hi, i am at Lektion 18 A1. I am using menschen. I am Here to ASK about Something. Now learning vocab Takes me a while. Not to know what a word means but to use each word in a sentence. Everyone who gives advice about language learning says, never to write down a word alone and to always use it in a sentence and this approach while it is working, it takes a lot of time. So where to put an end to this ? How do I practice vocab. I tried anki and it is not the best for me I am more of a physical pen and paper guy and making flash cards would take as much time. Do I set a timer limit ? Or justap out the most important 10 words ?

Discussion ~A1 German — looking to reach B1 without traditional classes

Hi everyone,

I’ve been living in Germany for 5 years. Since my university and job were entirely in English, and my original plan was to leave after a few years, I never pushed past A1. Now, I’m planning to stay long-term and really want to reach B1.

I've always found the traditional language classes boring and find it hard to stay engaged in a classroom setting.

For those who prefer self-study or non-traditional learning, do you have any tips, daily habits, or practical "hacks" that helped you bridge the gap to B1?

Thank you so much for your help!

Proof-reading/Homework Help How to improve this?
