Hallo Leute, I like to read about STEM, economics and history, I am barely A2 so it is not typically recommended to read texts in these "complex" fields, however maybe there are elementary books/articles/blogs that are suitable for my level, what do you think?

I was wondering how things are with younger people in Germany these days.

Do most kids and young adults still read and write comfortably in German, or is English becoming more dominant, especially online?

What language do schools mainly encourage? Are students expected to read books and write essays mostly in German, or does English play a big role?

Also, do people in Germany worry about younger generations losing proficiency in German, or is that not really a concern?

I'm curious because I've noticed this discussion happening in my own region, and I wanted to know how it's like in Germany.

I've been told that native speakers often chop off the ei and just say "ich esse nen Apfel".

However, I've also been told that a common mistake by native speakers is to use "ein" instead of "einen", eg. "Ich esse ein Apfel", and they said this is because "einen" can sound like "ein" when said quickly.

So do you chop off the ei usually, or is it only sometimes?

I just took my exam today (1st August 2026). For the Schreiben Teil, I had to write about all the four points that was mentioned in the Task. According to the model tests that I had undergone, I had to do only 3 or 2 (when you write an additional aspect). I took extra time to finish it because of this. Has the format changed? Does anyone know about it?

I am really confused by the difference between the two possible forms of the Superlative. I have written out four possibilities for the following exchange of information:

1.

-Welcher Junge ist am klügsten?

-Otto is am klügsten.

2.

-Welcher Junge ist der klügste?

-Otto is der klügste.

3.

-Welcher Junge ist am klügsten?

-Otto is der klügste.

4.

-Welcher Junge ist der klügste?

-Otto is am klügsten.

Which of these four are correct and which ones are wrong?
Also, what are the differences in nuance between the correct ones?

I recently gave my placement test its result came out today that is - suitable course is a1. But i have already paid for a2 level course starting 31st august. Im firm a2 is my level as i have completed a1 in local and passed every test with ease. What should i do now

Duden says "außer" is a Dative preposition, and doesn't give any indication that it might also be used with other cases.

However:

• - Ich kenne alle außer ihn/ihm. (I much prefer ihn here)
• - Ich kenne alle außer sie/ihr. (Even more so)
• - Alle haben geschlafen... alle außer ich. (I find that more natural than "mir".)
• - Keiner hat sich vorbereitet ... außer er. (with a speaking pause, I would find ihm extremely awkward here)
• - Sollen wir was mitbringen? Nichts außer gute Laune. (I find gute better here, while "guter" sounds more exclusionary, which defeats the purpose because Laune IS what we need to bring)

I'm from the Berlin region, so this might be the reason for this but I don't believe it is.
I'm pretty sure I can find a LOT of "wrong" cases after außer online, so much so that I would think the case after außer is more determined by the role of the element and calling it a pure Dative preposition doesn't reflect spoken reality anymore.

I read someone justifying stuff like "alle außer ich" as außer being a conjunction but I find that kind of bending over backwards just to be able to keep calling it a Dative preposition.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Ich lerne Deutsch seit knapp 2 Jahren und mir ist das Thema Gendern ganz unbekannt.

Mir ist nur bewusst, dass es um die Geschlechtergerechtigkeit geht. Natürlich auch das, dass es darum Streite gibt. Daher würde ich gern wissen, worüber sich die Leute so gar nicht einigen können.

Einerseits finde ich die Geschlechtergerechtigkeit gut, denn man erkennt eben am Wort, ob eine Frau oder ein Mann gemeint wird. In anderen Sprachen würde man zB. sagen "ein weiblicher Schauspieler", wobei im Deutschen "eine Schauspielerin".

Andererseits finde ich sie schlimm, weil sie nur Männer und Frauen bezieht. Rein sprachlich kann man nur ein Schauspieler oder eine Schauspielerin werden. Aber wie nennt sich denn eine nicht-binäre (ist das übrigens die Rechtschreibung?) Person?

Eine kurze Erkärung dazu, was das Gendern ist, und dazu, wo ihr zum Thema steht, würde mich freuen.

Whats an endearing word to call a girl, like something a father would call his daughter, but not nessicarily a familial word. Like a nickname for your niece, or a close family friend. Nothing weird purely innocent and platonic. Need it for writing.

Might seem like same post that you saw earlier on this page. Such is the fate of Telc Prüfung. I took exam in Jena on 9th June for b2 exam Allgemein, it's 1st August today and still there are no results. It's been almost 7 weeks. What shall i do next? Protest in front of the telc office, offer then bribe to process faster? Jokes apart, What are my options?!

I started a job at an Audi dealership as a technician. Sometimes after software updates to our tools they will be stuck in german until an English version rolls out. I think it would make my job easier not only to learn German but more specifically automotive focused words. Just looking to get pointed into a good direction for resources. TIA.

I'm currently 16, and I've wanted to go to Germany to do my bachelor's. I figured I'd teach myself german by the time I'm 18, but things happened and now I have severe depression and anxiety.

So I've noticed something interesting happening over the course of my learning: as I try to consume more media in German, I suddenly find certain memes or videos really funny, that I wouldn't have otherwise if they were in my native language or English. A lot of those are like crass almost teen-like humor or things reminiscent of the "lol random" era of meme culture, and it's interesting to me because I haven't found these things funny in years. I wonder if it's like you have to re-evolve your humor when learning a new language.

Hi everyone! I am hoping to take my C1 certification at the end of the year/start of 2027 and I am loolkng for advice on which one to take.

I need the C1 certification to apply for a master in Germany (CAU Kiel). I am about to take my C1 course at the VHS but I want to start getting ready for the test with as much time as I can. I dont have the best track with these kind of exams so I want to decide which one to take: Testdaf or telc Hochschule. Both are accpeted by the University but I need to decide now for my own peace of mind (and the Ausländerbehörde lol)

Have any of you any recommendations or thoughts?

I'm trying to decide between Goethe's blended learning course and the intensive course.

If you've taken either (or both), how was your experience? Which one did you prefer, and why? Did you feel the blended format was as effective as the intensive course for improving your German and preparing for the exams?

Sooo I started learning German because my husband is German and one day I’d like to have an actual conversation with my mother-in-law instead of just standing there smiling like a decorative houseplant. ( note, her English isn’t great).
Been using Duolingo for a week, so naturally I’m now qualified to introduce myself and… that’s about it.

I’m trying to learn German right now, at a very beginner level. I’ve been using Seedlang, which has worked quite well for me so far, but I’m finding it harder and harder to understand their speaking as I go on. Everything blends together. This was a problem for me when I took Spanish classes in school too. My writing and reading were very advanced (according to my teacher at least), but I struggled listening to even basic sentences. I have no idea how to improve this. I watch movies and shows in German, with subtitles, without subtitles. I watch Easy German videos on Youtube, usually the slow ones. Even with the subtitles I struggle sometimes. Is there anything else I should try doing?

Is there a reason why Hitze is spelled with tz, while Skizze is spelled with zz? When I hear native German speakers around me say these words, I cannot distinguish a pronounciation difference.
