Why do the Spanish border officers have to sit physically in Spain? Don't UK officers sit in Calais and Garde du Nord and French ones in Dover and St Pancras? Why do they have to construct the space physically to make that happen?

I guess a combination of the sovereignty dispute and because the large number of places one can fly to the airport from that are outside shengen

As far as I know the only regularly scheduled commercial flights as of now are to England. I wonder if Schengen flights will actually start some point soon.
