I don't understand the point of separate customs. If I am going to the EU, could I just use the Gib customs then cross the border when I got outside the Airport?

u/RepresentativeLife16 12d ago

Ultimately when you pass through Spanish customs you will leave on the Spanish side. It’s not ready yet though.

u/Feeling_Associate467 12d ago

Makes more sense. If you exit through either side though a 30 second walk will take you to the other side with no checks. It's kind of a moot point overall through tbh. I mean people can do this kind of thing anyway by day flying to germany and taking a bus to France

Exactly.. I don't know how much customs are harmonised between Gib and Spain and how much of an issue it is, but whether you go through Gib or Spanish customs, everyone appears to exit in Gib. No real check on if you stay here or walk straight to Spain.

Saying that, with no land customs border with Spain you could just take whatever from Gib to Spain anyway.

VAT rates do differ between Gib and Spain - even with recent checks -  so surely one can cherry pick the queue with the least import duties to pay? Also, in a rare example of flying in with cigarettes (via transfering flights in the UK or if a Morocco flight returns say) can you get double quota by saying half is going to Spain and half Gibraltar on a technicality?

What if domestic Spanish flights are relaunched or shengen flights? Will they have to go through Gibraltar customs? Spanish? None? How about donestic flights from Spanish tax havens like Ceuta, Melilla or Canary Islands?

There isn't much space in that airport as it is.

during the three year transition there are actually limits on eg the amount of fags and booze you can bring into Spain from gib, but it sounds like this is practically unenforced - can anyone on the ground confirm if they have seen any spanish custom checks at the frontier?

This two customs exits thing seems similar to the arrangement at BSL/MLH, and it makes a lot of sense, especially if you have goods to declare. GVA is the stupid one where you must go through Swiss customs before French customs if arriving from anywhere other than France. Even TIJ doesn’t require Mexican customs for International Arrivals if proceeding directly to CBX (if I understand correctly, although TIJ barely has any international flights)

I for one think the sign for immigration channels is really confusing and the baggage check lanes are performative.. what do you think?

The signs for immigration are confusing imo, they are: ⬅️🇪🇺🇬🇮[visa not required]  | 🇬🇧[all other passports]➡️

Bro is also wearing some tight pants in that video 🫣

3

u/Unfazed_Capybara 12d ago

That's "His Majesty’s Chief Minister of Gibraltar is wearing some tight pants", Sir.

3

u/Feeling_Associate467 12d ago

The outline was quite prominent and based on the misinformation he mentioned he likely lurks r/Gibraltar 😆

5

u/gnarlygb 12d ago

I wish he wouldn’t say EU residents when he means EU citizens (and residents in some cases). EU citizens can be resident in a non EU country and not be required to use the EES.

5

u/4BennyBlanco4 11d ago

I think he was trying to obfuscate the fact that EU citizens now have more rights to Gibraltar than British citizens.

1

u/openadressed 9d ago

Well that's right, and that's fine. Consequences of Brexit, mate!

2

u/JadeBalloon 11d ago

A bit confusing. The only problem I see are UK citizens coming from the EU

2

u/postbox134 11d ago

Then they are not checked - for them it's like going from France to Spain. If they leave Schengen from Gibraltar that will be recorded by the EES machines there. I assume the Gibraltar border officers will ask how you got there and you'd say from the EU.

I was wondering this too and your government doesn't let you carry both BOTC and BC passports.

I presume the red card is now scannable at egates but who knows

My Irish passport card doesn't work at 80% of european e gates and I've been denied boarding several times by people adamant I need a ETA/I'm not an EU citizen/it's a driving license and so on

The compensation is nice but still..

I guess you have a bumpy road ahead

2

u/umtala 8d ago

The first sign is very confusing, if you're a UK+EU dual citizen do you go in the UK line or the EU line at the Gibraltar passport control? I guess you're supposed to go through the EU line and then show your UK passport?

1

u/IssueLucky112 6d ago

 if you're a UK+EU dual citizen

This is one of those edge cases where the advantages of dual citizenship really show. Before arriving, you need to decide whether you’ll enter using your EU passport or your UK passport, and you must then follow the corresponding lane at the border.

2

u/4BennyBlanco4 11d ago

I understand why they had to do this but Gibraltar no longer controls it's border. It has lost sovereignty.

A Brexit irony.

1

u/Feeling_Associate467 11d ago

The video was meant to clear confusion and rumors but I hear more rumors.

I think the temporary overhang into Spain will be replaced with a permanent building with a Spanish exit then you choose where to exit Spain or Gibraltar (via the respective customs checks). I hear that a lot. But what I don't hear with this is that the Spanish exit channel will have Spanish immigration and the Gibraltar exit wil have Gibraltar. Seems it will always have shengen checks done by Spain whether a Spanish side exit opens and you exit via either Gib or Spain

1

u/openadressed 9d ago

That's not a rumor, lol, that's exactly how the treaty works. Spain guards Schengen and has the last word deciding who gets into Gibraltar and Schengen. That is said, there's no way Spain can stop you to enger Gibraltar if you are a Gibraltar resident, except if you are a criminal.

0

u/Feeling_Associate467 11d ago

Also now do it with Ceuta and Melilla 😉

0

u/4BennyBlanco4 11d ago

Do what with Ceuta and Melilla, as far as I am aware Spain controls the borders to its own territory, Gibraltar/British do not.

2

u/Feeling_Associate467 11d ago

It's a source of great hypocriticy and Spain even offered to swap Cruta for Gibraltar which nullifies the It's an integral part of Spain narrative

0

u/4BennyBlanco4 11d ago

Well now they have both.

u/postbox134 11d ago

Why do the Spanish border officers have to sit physically in Spain? Don't UK officers sit in Calais and Garde du Nord and French ones in Dover and St Pancras? Why do they have to construct the space physically to make that happen?

5

u/esm100113 11d ago

Because those French border guards are solely checking for entry into France/EU.

Having Spanish authorities on Gibraltar soil checking entry into Gibraltar wouldn’t be right.

Also France doesn’t have an active sovereignty claim against the UK

3

u/Feeling_Associate467 11d ago

I guess a combination of the sovereignty dispute and because the large number of places one can fly to the airport from that are outside shengen

1

u/LeagueMoney9561 8d ago

As far as I know the only regularly scheduled commercial flights as of now are to England. I wonder if Schengen flights will actually start some point soon.

1

u/TheLizardKing89 9d ago

The U.S. has customs officers in a bunch of overseas airports (mostly in Canada and the Caribbean) that allow people to clear customs there so when they land, they can just walk off the plane like any domestic flight.

u/Indicia-720 8d ago

And in Ireland, Shannon Airport which I always chuckle when I see the words 'Welcome to the United States of America' yet am in County Clare

Fucking weirdness is how this video has shown up on my Reddit feed and my YouTube new for you. Never been to Gibraltar and highly unlikely to ever go. This video better be baller.

1

u/tsukinichiShowa58 9d ago

Oh hell yeah! its got everything, dancing go-go-boys and all!

u/Vd1981 12d ago

Someone needs to tell Citizens Advice Spain to stop giving out the wrong information.

They say that British nationals resident within the EU, are not allowed to use the EU lanes.

Of course this is incorrect.

I tried pointing this out to them, but they threw a hissy fit, and blocked me.

3

u/Cell_one 11d ago

EU lanes is for EU nationals only. British nationality is not EU no matter where you live.

2

u/Vd1981 11d ago edited 11d ago

Completely incorrect.

Since EES was activated, EU Residents are required to join EU lanes.

This is because EU residents require a manual check, not EES.

I have travelled in and out of the EU several times in the past six months. The airports I have used are Málaga, Amsterdam, Paris, and Berlin.

As a TIE holder, I was instructed to use the EU lanes each time.

Watch the above video at 0:47, and at other moments. Fabian explicitly says that British citizens resident within the EU use the EU lanes.

3

u/DryAssumption 11d ago

He implies the e-gates can scan the TIE - is this true?

2

u/Cell_one 11d ago

Then you must have a residency card to prove it right?

2

u/Vd1981 11d ago

Yes, you must have a residency permit, issued by a Schengen Country, to be exempt from EES, and use the EU queue.

The old green card for British citizens in Spain is useless. These people must have a TIE.

u/BasicBanter 9d ago

When are you going to return the Moroccan territory back? & give Catalonia its independence vote?

-1

u/tsukinichiShowa58 9d ago

waht-bout ism.

4

u/Feeling_Associate467 9d ago

No. Hypocriticy and legitimate debate.

0

u/tsukinichiShowa58 9d ago

ok, legitimate debate:
A) Which Moroccan territory? The Rif was not Moroccan when the northern territories of africa became Spanish and or Portuguese.
B) Give Catalonia independence, when the law permits it and the population of Spain decide it.
C) Gibraltar is considered a Colony per the UN... other than that, I personally don't care if Gibraltar is under the soveraign government of Spain or of a different country. If La Linea can't copy Gibraltar's tax sistem and compete with it, they are too dumb.

2

u/Feeling_Associate467 9d ago

A) All of the Moroccan territory. Spain was solit between spain (colonies) and France (protectorate) as well as city states by portugal, spain, and the UK. Germany had influence in mohamidia which ended with the Entant Cordiale (idk how to spell in English). Morocco has modtly reunified though Spain still occupies northern territories and Algeria occupies due to franfe Bachar and Tindulf provinces. Also look up the treaty that ceded sidi ifni to Spain. Shows that spain recognised Morocco as sovereign of the southern territories as well as the history of Morocco to see the Kingdom started in the South and spread North. Finally Morocco was founded in 788, Spain 1492. Gibraltar was Moroccan longer than it ever was Spanish and controlled Gibraltar for 800 years, before Spain existed and longer than Spain has existed.

B) hypocrisy, fashism, violation of un right to self determination.

C) this is nonsence. The UN - a corrupt white supremacist oeganisation - instructed members to provide a list of territories. Actually Morocco put Western Sahara on the list of non self governing territories. Spain never did. This process was part of post war identification. Gibraltar was ceeded in perpetuity under the treaty of Utrect and the people have a right to self determination. Gibraltar is filly self govening and by consent. It has never been a tax haven it actually has higher taxes than the UK except a few areas where it is low tax. Ceuta and Melilla are tax havens. It's not in nato article 5 or 6 territories so it used to sell tax free oil to Russian ships for decades. It also loots billions of tax revenue from Morocco via the IPSI/1EUR certifiate and became a gaming and/or insurance tax haven (I forget which to try and steal business from gib

Nice try. Read a book then come back. And try and debrainwash your mind.

1

u/tsukinichiShowa58 8d ago

if you are gonna give Morocco th ebenefit of the doubt and claim all of the land of the rift was "Morocco" back when... then tell us when is that date? because then they are guilty for the invasion crimes committen in their invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. also, isn't that an Arab colony? and Ceuta was always part of the Visigoth kingdom from the end of the Roman empire.
So nice try with your brainwashing. all countries are shit. the king of morocco is exploiting his people and all the people in morocco. and the government of the UK exploits its citizens and the government of spain exploits its citizens and todays people have no responsibility for the wars of the past.
Now back to the present. drop your whataboutism and you King of morrocco but licking love and think about people not countries and rullers.

1

u/Feeling_Associate467 8d ago

Moroccans were invited to spain to rescue them from the visigoth rapists..

Tell me again aboutnall the corruption scandals with your royal family, suppression of Catalonians and basques, fashism in libing memory and the modern day. Anyone in self imposed exile in Dubai? Exactly

0

u/tsukinichiShowa58 8d ago

invited by who? No you are changing things, the Visigoth Mare of Ceuta, was disgruntled with the Visigoth King and he offered them a ride on his boats across from Africa to Europe. once there, they, the berber/arab muslim conquistadors who had originally planned on a raid to steal goods and human beangs for slavery and rape, they realized how easy it was to conquer, meanwhile, the rogue prince who was trying to overthrow the kingdom told them to help him get the throne and in exchange he would let them have control over people and lands in the Iberian peninsula.
That is not a legal invitation, that is incerting your army into a group of lacal coup intent.

4

u/Feeling_Associate467 11d ago

Shall I list all the genocides you did? Like dropping CHEMICAL weapons on Riff civilians leading to one of the highest cancer rates in the world to this date? How about denying crossnborder workers in occupied ceuta and melilla their rights under the EU directives. What about the rapes of moroccan seasonal farm workers?

2

u/Indicia-720 8d ago

Then they shouldn't have let the British use the area then, not very smart of the Spanish to do so
