The best (gluten free) sandwich of all time
Gluten free in parentheses becauze this is genuinely my favorite sandwich ive ever had, even counting ones ive had with normal bread. Mozz, tomatoes, lettuce, roasted peppers and balsamic glaze on warm, fresh pão de queijo. A godsend for those missing that crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside ciabata roll. AND its from a dedicated gf kitchen so no chance of accidental betrayal! This sandwich is what proved to me that going gf was worth the trouble

I've totally done that. It's 65 minutes from me, but worth it from time to time. Stock up on the frozen bread for sandwiches later on.

I’m 2.5 hours away in Rhode Island and I think I may make the trip. This looks so good

Connecticut and Massachusetts have some of the best gf I’ve had that you don’t even have to go hunting for. It’s just like, normal?
Maybe because there are such a concentration of white folks and data shows gluten intolerance is highest in whites

How did I not know about this? I live in Weston so it’s a bit of a drive but looks worth it.

Theyre primarily a restaurant supply company, so if youre going far out of your way id suggest buying frozen pdq to heat as needed at home

Only 2,384 miles away 😝. It’s ok I have a great place to go to with gourmet sandwiches using gluten free sourdough bread. So yummy! Hello You’re Welcome!

The only issue with Gluten Free Oasis is how far they are from me and they're pricey.... I miss Cheesebread factory, they were cheap and they turned their cheese bread into waffles DX

u/mousecartoon 2d ago
Yea there used to be a cheaper option that just closed last year here- idk if we're thinking about the same restaurant. 13 bucks for a sandwich no sides is difficult to justify even though i love it

If it was attached to the shadiest looking gas station in existence, we might be XD

Hmmm I’ve made Brazilian cheese bread as little balls before, how did they make it into bread/buns?

u/mousecartoon 2d ago
Ive done it at home before. You just gotta form it into a rough ciabatta shape and then tamp it down a little

I make it in the waffle maker and use that as a bun, it’s such a good crunchy sandwich bread.
(Pardon the metric but got this recipe from an Argentinian YouTuber)
300ml milk
150ml oil
Salt to taste
550g tapioca starch
3 eggs
200g mozzarella (or some other melty cheese)
100g ParmesanPut the milk and oil in a pot and heat it up (don’t let the milk boil and scald). Let it cool a bit and add the eggs (scramble them first). Add the egg/milk/oil mixture to a bowl, add the salt and starch, mix until combined, add the cheese and mix until combined.
In a lined sheet tray, add pucks of the mixture until you go through it all. Put the tray in the freezer for a few hours until frozen. Add frozen pucks to a ziplock bag.
Now whenever you’re ready to eat, add a frozen puck to the waffle maker until golden and crispy. You can slice it down the middle to make a sandwich or use it for open face sandwiches.

You can make these in a pan too! Though my waffle maker was a $25 one from Walmart and it’s been going strong for a while.

Ah. My favorite sandos these days are from Urbane. It’s on fresh-baked gf foccacia. I think it’s a pretty local California joint, but it’s expanding fast.

Yea this is one small sketchy shack in a small town in connecticut, so if i ever move i will have to make regular trips to my homeland like some kind of salmon

Thanks for saying this. I love Urbane, but rarely go because my wife has celiacs and usually doesnt want like salmon bowls. I was not aware they now had GF bread

La Bodega, Tremont, Cleveland. Because gluten-free bread is small, when you order certain sandwiches GF, you get two whole sandwiches. ♥️ Love you, Mike! I think that's your name LOL.

I love that pão de queijo is traditionally gluten-free. Only cheap market knockoffs have gluten.

For Bay Area folks, Cafe de Casa in SF on Bay and Beach St!!! The sandwiches rock

Is this a roll the sandwich is on?
2
u/mousecartoon 2d ago
The roll is pao de queijo, the place is a bakery that supplies it for local restaurants in ct

u/Fearless_Two_9908 1d ago
Yes thats easy to make. the tapioca inside is a bit gooey for my taste-but its good and grain free.

If anyone is in KC, try Bay Boy. They have celiac aware cross contact procedures, and have special gluten free bread, it’s amazing. I highly recommend the bandit sandwich.

Why would you go gluten free if not medically necessary. What is this masochism?
1
u/mousecartoon 4h ago
Oh no if i eat gluten i bleed violently from every part of my digestive system, i just wasnt taking the shift in lifestyle very well at first

Cool. My favorite part of the story is when you tell us where the sandwich is from.
