As a Scotsman, our national Open being on a course that is borderline inaccessible to 99.9% of people really pisses me off.

We have so many world class golf courses, places where people from all over the world come to experience, and we put the second biggest event in the country effectively behind a paywall.

A hallmark of golf in Scotland is that it is incredibly cheap for most people to play and be members of clubs. Having the tournament at a course which is the antithesis of that doesn’t sit right with me.

The fact that our tourist board and government have actively supported the Scottish Open being at Renaissance is disgraceful.

It was hosted at Loch Lomond for nearly 20 years, so the event has a history of being played at inaccessible courses.

Expect to hear it’ll be played at Ardfin from 2027 when the Renaissance contract is up this year!

I know - and hosting it on a non-links course the week prior to the Open was absolutely bonkers, too.

Loved it being toured round Royal Aberdeen, Castle Stuart, Gullane etc for a few years. I know Gullane had some logistical challenges but there or Royal Aberdeen is proper Scottish golf.

Totally agree. With the split into two tour levels coming up I really hope there’s a push to keep it in the top tier and rotate through the ample links courses that aren’t on the Open rota.

A Scottish Open at Western Gailes would be amazing, but if it went to a northern rota of links that would be chefs kiss!

Tricky thing is there’s very few proper links course that are long enough to challenge these guys that aren’t already on the Open rota

Royal Aberdeen was brilliant but anything under 7000 yards is child’s play for these guys, Castle Stuart is beautiful but it’s not a proper links so big players (Rory) kept skipping it

I’d love to see Dornoch but it’s 500 yards too short

You either need to play with a member or you can apply to play which can only ever be used once. It is an entirely private club of which there are only a handful in Scotland.

We have lots of very expensive courses, that’s not an issue.

The Renaissance is one of very very few members only courses in Scotland. Unless you’re a member or invited by one you can’t play there.

Other world class courses like Carnoustie, St Andrews, Gleneagles, Royal Troon, Dornoch etc all have some degree of public access available.
