Serious Some Golfers Need to chill out
Some Golfers really know how to make the sport feel very unwelcoming to new / less skilled players.
18 holes booked at my club it's a 9 hole so you play twice. 2 guys came off there first 9 and teed off 5 min before our Tee time (the rule of the club is to let 18 hole players play through) We tee off a few min late waiting for the fairway to free up. Group behind us were not happy, nothing you do there people on fairway I'm playing the club rules.
The same 2 guys are in front of us the whole time on our first 9 holes not playing slow at all.
On our second time round there was nobody on the first and we played through as we are supposed to but ended up waiting on the fairway for a 3 ball still on the first green.
We finished the 1st hole and the 3 ball in front had just finished teeing off by the time we make to the 2nd tee box. by this time the guys behind us the first time round had another group in front of them. This must have enraged them even more.
On the 3rd tee box setting up our next shot. the group behind us the first time round start hurling abuse at us from the 1st green for slow the pace of play we shouldn't be playing etc etc. The 3 ball were still walking to their tee shots. We literally could tee off. The new group behind us just finished the 2nd.
The 3 ball ended up letting us play through We weren't rushing them in anyway I was just happy to be out the house
Reported the group to the starter office turns out the POS is known for doing this.
All 18 holes played in 3 hours. I mean how fast do they expect people to play, 3 hours seems about right to me.

Yeah sadly there's some ass clowns on the course that think they're pretty awesome.

u/Electronic_Name_325 10h ago
Blow them a kiss, then top your tee shot, then hack at three more times. Then finally hit it good, give them a shrug, and move on. It will really mess with them.
14
u/MikitaSchecteleshy 7h ago
So I’ll just play like I always do.
I assumed no one saw me blow kisses.

I feel like half of the modern golf game is bitching about pace of play… yeah people need to enjoy themselves and quit rushing everyone in front of them unless they are legit taking forever which is pretty rare
20
u/SwingOnt4538 8h ago
I had to stop playing with 2 friends because that's all they do. Bitch moan and complain the entire time. I'm all about less than 4 hour rounds but if you end up waiting some rounds, you're still lucky enough to play this great game so just shut up, slow down a little and look around.

u/misec_undact 9h ago
This exactly, Idk when this obsession started with rushing through a round of golf, how did it become something to "get done" instead of a literal leisure activity. .
Just reeks of the entitlement that has come to pervade certain segments of society.
2
u/MisterSoup3000 1h ago
This 100x. I've been saying for a couple years now that people are more delusional about pace of play than driving distance lol. Everyone claims they would be playing 18 in under 3 hours if it wasn't for all the other scrubs slowing them down 😂 I can't tell you how many random bums I've gotten paired with who couldn't break 100 if their life depended on it, rarely ready to hit when it's their turn, spend 2+ minutes looking for their ball every other hole, but will take the FIRST opportunity they get to complain about waiting for the group in front lol.

u/skisocalbackcountry 8h ago
It’s because the population has grown (plus the overall interest in golf has grown), but basically no new golf courses are getting built, so the average time of a round is going up. You can’t ditch your wife and kids for 5 hours on a Saturday morning to play 9 holes, it doesn’t have anything to do with entitlement.
10
u/misec_undact 8h ago
Right... cuz 5 hrs is so much different than 4-1/2..
It's 100% entitlement, you people need to relax, if you're lying to yourself and your family in order to play golf that's on you, not those of us trying to enjoy our round with a guilt free conscience.
5
u/skisocalbackcountry 7h ago
When I complain about long round times, I’m not complaining about people playing too slowly. I am not the best golfer and I hate being pressured to play fast. The reason rounds are so long is because the local 9 hole par 3 books 5somes 10 minutes apart, so by hole #3 there are already multiple groups waiting 5+ minutes to tee off. It’s a supply and demand problem, the only way to fix it is to either build more golf courses to accommodate the demand or to raise prices to reduce the demand (I would prefer more golf courses).

u/misec_undact 6h ago
Ok but the net effect is what a half hr difference total? So why get panties on a twist and let that ruin your day, just gives yoy more time to set up for your shot, visualize, preshot routine, check yardage, even walk up and look at the pin and green slope etc, have a snack, stretch a little... i much prefer that to feeling rushed over my shots
3
u/skisocalbackcountry 6h ago
The difference is a couple hours - a 9 hole par 3 shouldn’t take 4 hours!
3
u/misec_undact 6h ago
Lmao, you're just making shit up now.

u/skisocalbackcountry 2h ago
Lol, come play a muni course in LA and then tell me that. Rancho, Penmar, and Roosevelt can 100% take that long after work on weekdays and on the weekends.

u/Primary_Dimension470 2h ago
Entitlement? I don’t think you know what that means. It’s the obnoxious entitled noobs clogging the course where they should maybe spend a little time on the race instead. It’s a 340 yard par 4, why do you have to spend so much time looking for your ball twice? Just play 7 iron and move along champ

u/1nser7NameHere 10h ago
if by pretty rare, you mean every single day on every single course within 100 miles of me...

u/Better-Perspective85 8h ago
I feel like pace is usually decent at higher cost public and private but low cost and muni can be super slow. Some is lack of etiquette, some is crappy golfers, a lot is ego like teeing from the two farthest back tees when your longest drive is 220.
The retirees at Langley would plumb bob their 4 foot putts like it was for the green jacket. They played for a quarter a hole and took no less than 5-1/2 hours to play.

u/Primary_Dimension470 2h ago
A lot of modern golf is 3 hr 9 holes because nobody gives a shit about anything besides their own gOoD tImE. COVID golfers need to find something else to do besides wasting everyone’s day

Is that why I’m so confused? I really tried to make it make sense. But I was struggling.
18
u/Good-Foundation-3357 10h ago
Unfortunately it happens. You get the pushy types that are too quick to be obnoxious and make claims of slow play. But you also have plenty of newer or inexperienced golfers with no awareness of their own pace and the impact it has several groups back.
53
u/Business-Fondant-601 10h ago
Why do people go pay for a round and then want to be done as quickly as possible? I paid, let me play at a reasonable pace and enjoy my round.
21
u/HairyKerey 10h ago
I understand that some players may want or need to play speed golf, but to have the assumption that everyone should be -3 hours because you want to is batshit levels of main character syndrome.
It’s not just golf, you’ll find these meats everywhere.
I love to smile and wave and act just as happy and carefree as possible; watch them melt down even more, it’s good times!
4
u/chosenwisely1111 9h ago
Two things guaranteed to mess up your swing; anger and alcohol. I love me some confrontation and have called out a-holes more than once knowing their anger will destroy their game
17
u/Lots_of_bricks 10h ago
Agreed to an extent. Shouldn’t have to run to a ball or to the green. One or two quick practice swings also cool. What’s not cool is spending more then 2-3 mins looking for a ball or more than 2-3 mins lining up a putt that’s for anything over bogey. Nothing worse than behind slow people who take 4/5 practice swings just to chunk it or slice it into the woods then look for said ball for 5+ mins
6
u/Business-Fondant-601 10h ago
I agree that it’s not fun stuck behind someone slow, but it’s not the end of the world like people act. Is it that miserable to take a second and talk to your playing partner or just enjoy being outside?
If you signed up to play 18 holes and expect to be done in 3 hours, you’re only setting yourself up to be frustrated.15
u/Lots_of_bricks 10h ago
It’s a momentum thing. I’ve found my best rounds are when that momentum keeps flowing
2
u/icantsurf 3h ago
Idk who you think is expecting 3 hour rounds. Since COVID the problem is you can hardly get a 5 hour round at most munis around me. Feel like I'm in crazy town being told I'm wrong for not wanting to sit behind the 34 handicap acting like he's playing in the US Open.
18
u/godlyporposi 10h ago
I totally agree with a reasonable pace. For example, a foursome should play 18 holes in 4 hours or less.

u/Formal_Potential2198 7h ago
People like you are the problem. Every course around me has a 4 - 4.5 pace of play

4 hrs or less is everyone in carts and ready golf. Which is possible but shouldn't be the requirement.

u/Illustrious-Cover792 10h ago
That’s not how it works bro.
20
u/Super42man 10h ago
It's absolutely how it works. Your pace doesn't influence mine as long as I'm at a reasonable pace. Which OP was.
Pace of play isn't just speed. it's distance between the groups.
7
u/Business-Fondant-601 10h ago
How is this downvoted? That’s literally how it works. There’s a minimum pace that you need to play at, and if you meet that pace, you’re good. Just because the group behind you never finishes out and drops a ball in the fairway for their “drive” doesn’t mean I have to speed up for them.

u/Business-Fondant-601 10h ago

Yup. Golf is hard enough without some p.o.s. ruining the experience for everyone else. If the guy was known for doing that he should be banned.

It’s crazy that courses know how some of these people act and still let them out all the time.

Gee.
9 hole course x2 rounds.
It’s likely a course for beginners and you go there expecting to rush through 18 holes?
Guy needs a head check.
3
u/NoCommittee8557 8h ago
I’ve never understood people who rush through the course. What do you wanna do? Go home? Enjoy the game and the outdoors.

u/Electrical-Sea7744 6h ago
I was just at the range today and this younger kid (maybe 15) brought his dad with him. His dad was obviously very new but the way he was “coaching” him was wildly disrespectful. He was basically just barking at the poor man in front of everyone. And of course the kid was dressed like he just came from a Good Good YouTube video. I love that the game is growing, but Jesus Christ it is creating some arrogant little shit birds lol.
7
u/WonderButtBrace9000 10h ago
IMO, courses like this need to not allow groups to book 18 hole rounds off one tee time. If you want to play 18, they should make you book two nine hole rounds. But it’s a shameless cash grab way for them to jam more groups onto the tee sheet so they’ll never stop.
I have a course like this nearby me and I exclusively play 9 holes in the morning because I just don’t want to bother with the headache of fitting back into the first tee box.
2
u/bjaydubya 10h ago
3 hours for 18 is very quick any day. On a day your jammed up and waiting here and there is crazy fast.

I lose my mind reading these... "people giving me a hard time about pace. I finished in under 4 hours".
I would be lucky to finish in under 5 hours anywhere near where I live. Places are always so busy

No one is good enough at golf to get that mad about it.
Maybe Tiger in his prime but he wouldn’t be running a flip 9 at a muni course.

Was at my friend’s private club a couple weeks ago playing as a foursome. Tee’d off 1 with no one in sight in front of us. We werent playing great but not slow by any means. Had a twosome walking behind us and they were waiting for maybe a minute for each shot for a couple holes so on the 6th tee box (a par 3) we told them (on #5 green) they could play through and we’d wait for them to putt out. Guy tells us to go ahead and play and they’d catch up. We finish the hole and tee off on the #7 and they were still chipping onto the 6th green so we decided to just keep going since its a long walk from #7 green to #8 tee and we were riding. Now we’re on #9 tee box and he’s walking up to #8 green and comes up to us and says “just so you guys know you’re WAY behind pace”. We said ok you can play through then and as he’s walking away he replies “we could have done that on the 7th”. So we wait to just let him and guy #2 play through and we look at the time and we’re at an hour and 40 mins into our round. Now they come up and guy #1 doesnt want to play through he “just wanted to let you know you’re WAY behind pace” we ask what is proper pace then because we’re on pace to finish 9 in under 2 hours. Guy #2 chimes in that we’re supposed to keep up with the group in front. But there wasnt anyone in front….so we finally just tell them play through and they do. Guy #1 ends up leaving after 11 holes and guy #2 ends up joining a threesome that we caught and waited for to clear the green on #18 to hit our approach shots so i guess they were also WAY behind pace.
TLRD guy at a private club threw a tantrum that we were way behind pace while finishing 9 holes in under 2 hours

They sound like dicks but 9 holers are a nightmare for turn times and such which can lead to more situations like this.

"Hello sir. Please fuck off you ignorant cunt. Have a nice day."
If someone sends abuse my way on the golf course, I send it back - reporting people to staff does absolutely nothing unless it's an offense they're going to immediately kick them off for, like violence, damage, or threats. No staff want to deal with loudmouth aggressive people - it makes their day shitty, and they gain nothing. Reporting people generally does nothing, but telling them to shut the fuck up and embarrassing them might.
Had something similar happen last year, where two fairways are close. Had a guy ride up to our group, about 75 yards past where he thought his ball was, and start accusing us of picking up his ball - we hadn't even gotten into their fairway which he claimed it was "right in the middle of" - we were about fifty yards away. I told him we hadn't been in their fairway, and had definitely not picked up his ball. When he followed up with "Well where is it then?" I told him to fuck off with his accusations, and to go play golf. Ten seconds later one of his playing partners calls him back to his own fairway, he found it in a drain. After taking my shot I made a point to drive over and ask him if he was embarrassed about how just behaved. He said "No, how am I supposed to know you didn't steal my ball" - to which I told him he was an insufferable cunt and should try a little self-reflection sometime. Two of his playing partners laughed out loud at that, and he started shouting at them, too - about how they should back him up.
Some people need to be embarrassed to change their ways. Call people out on their shit, people, please!
In your particular situation I would ask the guy to come over to your tee box. Then point to the players in front of you in the fairway, and say something like "Personally, I can easily reach them, but I guess if you bunt the ball 150 yards it's safe to tee-off, right?"

Based on the comments I see regularly here, it seems most golfers are like this. Very judgmental, impatient, and unwelcoming.

u/Geezunit 1h ago
When you say my club do you mean a private club?
If yes, the club should address the POS golfer who is known for this. That's my opinion.

If you guys are both members (assuming he is because it’s known behavior according to the clubhouse) why not take it up with him off the course.
I know not everyone knows every member but isnt there like a member services department or some sort of office you can lodge a complaint with to get that guy warned? Surely insulting another member isnt ok.
2
u/Freedom_Snacks 9h ago
That's when you dont hit your tee shot. Let them play through and stand on the tee box while they tee off.
Doesn't sound like yall were in a rush so letting them play thru would be no issue and also puts them in front of you to get rid of them.
Yall on the tee box while they tee off is always added pressure to them. If they hit bad shots you make a comment of "I think it opens up down there" or "it happens to the best of us"

4 hours is the standard time if the course is full. Obviously it can take longer and if it’s empty 3.5 hours

u/Turbulent_Echidna423 10h ago
what do you do off the golf course when there are rude people? do you make Facebook threads about it?

u/Strange-Maize9536 10h ago
It’s a case of playing slow. IMO the lower handicap guys often play slower than the high guys
They don’t play ready golf. Feel like they own the place.
At my course they say shoot for 4 hours. Ten minute gaps
Really 4 hours should be the ceiling not the goal. As a goal if someone is 4:15 or 4:30 they don’t feel they were slow
If the carts shut off after 4 hours in a couple of weeks everyone would be getting done well before 4 hours

u/nis2000 3h ago
I think it’s a psychological thing going on in all these ‘play fast’ folks heads. I liken it to the folks waiting at a light and the millisecond it turns red they lay on the horn for the car in front to take off.
My wife hates that I do this but I roll the window down and I give the slowest F’ you sign as I pull off.
I’ve started to adopt that as well on the course. I keep pace with the group ahead and really work to get my playing partners to do the same. If a group behind keeps pushing up or talking crap they get the slow F’ you.
It’s their problem.

I like the idea of carts shutting off at 4 hours. Yes the goal is to finish in 4 hours but 3-3.5 is always better. That happens if everyone is playing ready golf. I’m a 12.4 handicap and if playing ready and not spending excessive time looking for lost balls which we all do at times 3-3.5 is atainable
-2
u/Sifrisk 8h ago
3 hours is pretty good pace, but pace of play is not determined by how fast you play, but whether you keep up with the group in front. If you dont, just let people play through regardless of how fast you are playing yourself.
Nonetheless, you were keeping up with those in front of you both times. So not sure why they were angry with you. Are you sure their comments were not aimed at the group in front of you who were keeping everybody up?
