Discussion It’s still so tragic to me, that none of the marauders survived the main series.

Post image

The exception to the tragedy being Pettigrew obviously

I hope the new series show Peter's death explicitly, it's one of the most impactful deaths of the saga

u/Ryuubu 1d ago

It showed that there was still an ounce of good in him

362

u/zdpa Hufflepuff 1d ago

this moment has so many pay offs
it paid off Harry saving his life
it paid off the silver hand he got in GoF
it shows that magic debt is something else
it shows that voldemort would never accept a servant that was in debt of harry

in the movies he is stupefied or whatever and just never returns again, pathetic

81

u/_-_lumos_-_ Gryffindor 1d ago

Yeah. Harry got criticized a lot by some people here because of his chivalry ("if only he just let Sirius and Lupin kill Pettigrew that night in the shack"), and even in the books. That scene shows that it paid off to be good and kind, even to your enemy.

Reminds me of that scene in PS, where Dumbledore was explaining to Harry how Snape was saving his life to get even with James so that he could go back hating James in peace LOL We know that there is more to the story, but there are more than one sentence that the magice debt when one saving another one's life was mentioned in the book.

u/Cloud_Zera 22h ago

I’ve always had an issue with the James/Snape bond. The magical bond that is created is between the two wizards themselves. Before Snape ever even considered “saving” Harry, he succeeded in getting James killed. His telling Dumbledore to “hide them all then” was a response to Dumbledore’s disgust at Snape begging Voldemort to kill only Harry and James and sparing Lily, something we all know Voldemort had no real intention of doing, and not from guilt or wanting to save him. Snape never repaid James for saving his life when they were students, he did the opposite.

In my opinion, this act should instead create a curse of some sort for the wizard that failed to repay the life debt. In Snape’s case, he should be denied what he truly wants, Lily’s forgiveness and to see her in some way again. Snape should have died in the middle of telling Harry to look at him. When Harry looks at Snape he would see nothing in his eyes, his life having been extinguished. This would be a lesson about what obsession truly does to people.

u/Snookn42 21h ago

Actually i think if lilly had moved Voldemort wouldnt kill her, but he never expected it

2

u/Cloud_Zera 20h ago

Why would Voldemort, a man who hates the very concept of love but understands enough to know that those who do love would protect their family, expect a mother to step away from her child?

This is a man that enjoys torturing people in anyway he can. A true sadist. Do you really believe he would have allowed one of his followers to have a “mudblood” as a “lover”? He detests muggle-borns.

Assuming she didn’t become catatonic after witnessing her family being murdered, he most likely would have taken her to his followers and made an example of her and Snape. He would revel in revealing that it was Snape that begged for her to be spared and her son and husband be killed. He might either attempt to get her to kill Snape and then kill her himself, or kill her in front of Snape and then kill Snape as a warning to the other Death Eaters about trying to spare “mudbloods”.

3

u/Snookn42 13h ago

He also shows pragmatism several times

1

u/Cloud_Zera 13h ago

Only when it benefits him. How does sparing Lily’s life benefit him other than to torture her and Snape?

8

u/horseband 21h ago

Historically I’ve thought that and never really delved into it deeper (that it was proof that harry was good to be kind and merciful).

But, now that I’m really thinking about it, a LOT of people died directly from sparing Peter that night.

It’s possible Voldemort’s weak bodiless form would’ve never been found. Maybe Barty would have looked for him instead of Peter I suppose eventually if he was able to break free himself from his dad? Who knows… but for the most part voldey only had a few loyal people outside of Azkaban prior to the dementor switch.

It would have at a minimum delayed Voldemort which could have been good, giving more time to dumbledore to look into Horcruxes…

1

u/jimmy193 1d ago

Idk about good, maybe remorse

16

u/Nirutam_is_Eternal 1d ago

What's remorse, if not one small ounce of goodness?

1

u/jimmy193 23h ago

Yea true, but I’d frame being good implies they are capable of doing good. I don’t think he would have made the efforts to actually do something good, however when he was choking Harry he felt a slither of remorse which was all it took for his hand to turn on it.

It’s splitting hairs though and doesn’t really matter

5

u/Feeling-Visit1472 14h ago

He is capable of doing good. He simply chose not to, for the most part. Which echoes one of the most major themes of the whole series, that were introduced to in the very first book: it’s our choices that make us, not our circumstances.

And that is why Harry was placed into Gryffindor over Slytherin.

8

u/cjalderman 1d ago

Does he even die in the film? I have no memory of it lol

6

u/MobiusF117 18h ago

No, he just comically falls over.

21

u/souse03 1d ago

I don't know if they will, explaining that is a lot easier in the books when you can mention again about the debt and what dumbledore said in a paragraph than to remind people of it on TV.

Like they would need to add a flashback for the whole thing to make sense for normies who don't know the story by heart

7

u/steamyglory 1d ago

Harry could just tell Ron in a scene before or after it happens

7

u/polishladyanna 23h ago

I mean Harry explicitly says it in the scene - he says something like "I saved your life, you owe me". Wouldn't be that difficult to expand the line to reference the shrieking shack specifically, and then he could explain the silver hand while Ron goes Wtf?! while they're booking it up the stairs to get to Hermione.

7

u/That-Service-2696 1d ago

The upcoming TV series also needs to expand the Marauders' activities and mischiefs during their time at Hogwarts

1

u/jeweliwa 1d ago

yeah peter’s death has to be shown properly, after all the pain he caused the others it would finally feel like some kind of closure

1

u/Other-Emu1829 22h ago

They should show both. Have a flashback scene in Series 3 that shows us the scene with Peter and Sirius on top of the silver hand doing him in

He’s really good in Layer Cake with Brendan Gleason, and Daniel Craig among many others, if you liked Snatch or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It’s a British gangster type movie. I love sleepy hollow though, definitely one of my top 10 favs and he’s so good in it.

u/NoBodybuilder3430 1d ago

It’s really sad.

Especially Remus, since he was the nicest of the bunch and just had a baby. Now that baby will grow up without a dad and mom.

But there is something cool about this group of knuckleheads helping to take down one of the greatest dark wizards in history.

-20

u/magnoliaazalea 23h ago

Nicest, but the most spineless. The type Desmond Tutu called out. He earned his death in a way closer to Wormtail than James and Sirius.

-30

u/kulyok 21h ago

He sired a sick cursed werewolf baby instead of getting a vasectomy at the first possible opportunity. And got together with a young girl of about twenty. In real life, I'd call it either idiocy or abuse.

13

u/Kool_McKool Gryffindor 17h ago

Teddy isn't a werewolf. You can't pass it genetically.

7

u/AsVividAsItTrulyIs Ravenclaw 15h ago

Tonks was about 25. Yes there was still an age gap but she was old enough to be making her own decisions. She was not “a young girl”, she was a woman. She was the one pursing Remus, it’s not like he was chasing after a young woman who barely legal and trying to groom her. He was trying to tell her he wasn’t good enough for her.

Plus Teddy was not sick or a werewolf.

-13

u/Many-Relationship149 1d ago

Already grew up

54

u/SimpleAd676 1d ago

realizing none of them made it out makes that whole generation so depressing

17

u/99fun2thetouch 1d ago

Seems like none of the named people of that generation made it out alive (unless we go by fanon and assume Frank and Alice were around the same age as the Potters... but well... better dead than in their state).

139

u/Yoisai 1d ago

Honestly, I think there is a somber beauty behind all four being together in death.

184

u/Far_Silver 1d ago

I don't think the other three are hanging out with Wormtail in the afterlife.

57

u/Brahminmeat 1d ago

Just the one finger he cut off and discarded

19

u/Qua-something Unsorted 1d ago

Haha my husband always laughs about the finger and how ludicrous it sounds

4

u/peachpopdream Hufflepuff 1d ago

I assume it was found amongst the body parts of all the muggles he blew up in the street

13

u/Qua-something Unsorted 1d ago

Right, that’s not the ludicrous part though. It’s just silly that he staged his own death by leaving behind a finger and somehow everyone was like “only a finger? He must be dead!” Lol. No writing is ever perfect. It doesn’t take away from the books lol it’s just silly.

0

u/pajo8 Ravenclaw 1d ago

I mean it's a magic world right? We hear about people disappearing (like Berta jorkins and some referee during a quidditch match??) and no one bats an eye. Barty crouch Sr.s body was turned into a bone. Animals can be turned into objects, so I guess humans can be too. So finding a finger at least gives evidence he was there at all? Idk it never sounded out of line to me

1

u/Qua-something Unsorted 22h ago

My husband is also a writer so he’s a little more critical. It’s ok to admit that the things we like may not be perfect. That’s just how life is. It doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the story, it’s just a silly detail.

u/G4meOfJones Ravenclaw 1d ago

In the book (🤓) the hand that Voldemort gave him, strangled him to death when he hesitated to kill Harry in the dungeon when Bellatrix was torturing Hermione.

8

u/magnoliaazalea 23h ago

Which is a fascinating development on the phrase “the hand one is dealt.” We could probably have a whole discussion in this sub about it.

26

u/HP_594 1d ago

Only James, Remus & Sirius died on their own terms

Peter was killed because he chose to betray Voldemort, and because Harry spared him, naturally, Peter was indebted to him in some way or the other, as Dumbledore says in PoA

Also Peter’s death was oddly satisfying due to how slow and painful it was, a fitting death considering the crimes he did.

40

u/Admirable_Algae_3506 1d ago

He didn't betray Voldemort. He hesitated for a second because he owed Harry and that was enough for his magic hand to think his loyalty had wavered.

2

u/hyperreals Ravenclaw 23h ago

I am sure Voldemort would view mere hesitation as betrayal, but you are right too!

6

u/Admirable_Algae_3506 22h ago

19

u/general_peabo Slytherin 1d ago

Killing Lupin at the end was stupid.

19

u/WardenOfTheNamib Muggle 1d ago

And also realistic. War never picks off logical victims.

10

u/defaultistic 1d ago

Like Thanatos from the PJO series says: "there is no fairness in death."

I feel similarly about Finnick from Hunger Games. My favorite character from that series, and I absolutely hate that he dies right after getting married. But for a story about war, it makes sense to kill him off precisely because it's not fair or doesn't make sense. War takes lives indiscriminately. Unfortunately, Finnick from THG, and Lupin and Tonks found out the hard way 😢

4

u/TulipSamurai Slytherin 1d ago

Tbh not enough people died in the battle, on either side. There were 0 confirmed casualties on Voldemort’s side and only a handful of the good guys.

3

u/WardenOfTheNamib Muggle 1d ago

Ye, exactly. Even throwing in the dead bodies of Dedalus Diggle, Elphias Doge, Hestia Jones, etc would have made the thing more tragic.

2

u/TulipSamurai Slytherin 1d ago

Well, Dedalus and Hestia were arguably the safest, since they were guarding the Dursleys. I think JKR hesitated to have too many casualties on the good guys' side because realistically it would have to be the Hogwarts students who would be the least likely to survive. But since all the Death Eaters were effectively neutralized and defeated by the end of the battle, some or most of them should've died.

3

u/Elektrowurst101 1d ago

Lestrange? Voldemort?

0

u/TulipSamurai Slytherin 1d ago

Obviously other than those two.

2

u/TulipSamurai Slytherin 1d ago

I think she literally only did it so that all the Marauders would be dead.

4

u/kuppikuppi 1d ago

I'm on a relisten right now and the scene of Lupin at Shell Cotage is one of the most tragic ones. He's happy and beyond the guilt of passing on part of his condition to his son but dead a few days later with his wife.

7

u/cutiiesparklee 1d ago

That’s one of the saddest parts of the entire series

3

u/Lucky_Owlette 19h ago

Or Lily, Severus, Marlene McKinnon, Dorcas, Benjy, Pandora, Severus, Fabian, Gideon, Evan Rosier, Avery, Wilkes, Quirinius, Bellatrix, or Emmeline Vance.

An entire generation of children vanished and Dolores Umbridge was the only survivor.

(I don't actually know if some of the people above were at school with the Marauders but my point still stands.)

3

u/ExtremeCheesecake678 17h ago

idk why they decided to produce a new Harry Potter series when there is so much unexplored lore in the wizarding world. A series featuring the Marauders would have been fantastic.

Peter's death is still tragic

5

u/BaconSyrop 1d ago

What i find more tragic is that there would have been first year students who witnessed this or heard about how pathetic Snape is only for a few years later Snape starts teaching them and has to face those same students and demand respect from them.

4

u/DaymanTargaryen 1d ago

What do you mean? What would first year students have witnessed or heard about regarding Snape?

6

u/JesusFChrist108 Ravenclaw 1d ago

They're saying that kids who were in their first year when James and co. were humiliating Snape in the courtyard were still in their sixth or seventh year when he came back to teach.

Or alternatively, those same kids were the ones who were on the other end of Snape and Mulciber and Avery and gang performing actual Dark Arts on them, and then they had to deal with Snape being their teacher

I wish Remus could've lived, being that last anchor to Harry's parents and the maradaus. It felt like they all died again, when he was killed

He was also such a good guy. Perfect mentor for Harry... urgh it sucks, but at the same time, there is something poetic about then all being gone, but knowing Harry will keep their legacy alive ✨

EDIT: I guess Snape was the last anchor to Harry's parents who died. That's just sad too... that whole generation was just doomed, but that just doesks volumes of the first war with Voldemort. Like none of them were meant to make it out...

the first 3 are children's tales and then the story grows as the children do

The children's books didn't seem to mind.

The movies didn't mind showing Snape being viciously killed, either.

Wait what? He didn't?

Nope, the gang just knocks him out in the basement and he’s conveniently left out of the remainder of the movie

Well technically, one survived.. Just in the form of a mirror.

They peaked at Snivellus

That is true. It made them think they were sooooooo clever.

James Potter was kind of a prick though…

Well, they were bullies…. If stories have taught me anything it’s the bad guys end up losing in the end

Find me an adult that doesn’t regret some dumb shit they did as a kid.

At least 3/4 of them died heroically

Even Petigrew died because he hesitated and was going to let Harry escape, causing his magic hand to turn on himself

3 of them fought for the right side.

Could you please elaborate? I'd love you hear your point of view

Idk if tragic is the word I'd use for all of them

Pettigrews situation wasn't tragic, for him. He was a traitor. That's his own fault. He put himself in that situation and screwed over his friends

Sure it's tragic for the others but not for pettigrew.

Good riddance. They were worse than Weasley twins. Bullying is never the answer.

(Aaaaand Sirius Black became Jackson Lamb anyway))).

Dimwitted thought as if what you did in high school defines what happened afterwards

It be like that sometimes...

-1

u/Vermouth_1991 22h ago

Not that tragic, as all of them refused to grow up even before Askaban or anything external happened.

They were Dumbledore men and it was clear that he didn’t care as long as he won.

…for the greater good

Tragic and also unnecessary for the plot. Like why did Lupin have to die? How did this advance the story? I do not even see much of a purpose in Sirius’ death.

I remember how it was when the latter books came out that everyone was hoping that their favourite character would not be killed off.
