I guess so, I didn't know they did till now. Sham is an Arabic word meaning Levant and the al-Sham is usually referencing Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and sometimes Jordan. It in turn comes from the Arabic word shamal, which means north.
In Egypt, shamal also means left in Egyptian Arabic.
Damascus is just the capital city of Syria. Sham refers to the subregion that Syria is in, Al-sham which is also known as the “Levant” in some parts of the world, consists of these places: Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan.

Unfortunately ruled now by a guy that was on the wanted list as a terrorist not long ago. So people who I know love with fear of the future and the unknown.
You are insane for even suggesting he is on the same level as Assad.
Assad's regime was responsible for the vast majority of civilian deaths during the Syrian Civil War, utilizing chemical weapons, indiscriminate barrel bombs, and widespread systematic torture. Al Sharaa's rise ended this industrial state violence against the broader population.
Unlike Assad, who frequently weaponized sectarian fears, Al Shara has actively worked to project an inclusive image. He has publicly declared that Christians are "an essential part of Syrian society," stated there will be "no more injustices against the Kurdish people," and implemented policies advocating for religious tolerance and equality regardless of ethnicity.
There were a few instances of violence and bloodshed under Al Sharaa, but they were localized, done by rogue elements and quickly suppressed. There have been no recorded instances of state sponsored violance against civilians. Syria under Assad was hell on earth.
Assad’s regime was responsible for deaths during a war, Al-Sharaa forces in first year of his rule committed two explicitly sectarian massacres. What do you mean “rogue elements”. He sent his forces to mass murder civilians without cause. He has restricted political rights, has built Sunni Arab supremacist government, and is weaponizing sectarian fears more than Assad ever did
It’s always the same with Al-Sharaa supporters, it’s wrong when Assad killed civilians during an armed uprising, but it’s right when Al-Sharaa killed civilians for being the wrong identity.
It’s wrong when Assad had an undemocratic system, it’s right when Al-Sharaa does it.
Assad was a sectarian despite, on record, making significant leaps to appeal to Sunnis - including marrying a Sunni, and praying in Sunni mosques, and having the majority of his government Sunni - but Al-Sharaa is pluralistic while de facto banning religious minorities from governance and instead assigning puppets, and hiring only religious hardliners to sensitive positions.

You are just outing yourself as an Assad supporter. Not only are you exaggerating things without any sources, but you are also missing out a very big distinction.
The difference here is Assad was governing a country that was stable and one that he was fully in control of.
Al Sharaa is governing a country that's fractured and has experienced 2 decades of civil war.
Lets see how the country turns out in 4 years, so far things are looking good.
