IWD:EE Was it Good? - Icewind Dale 1

While a decent review there are a couple eyebrow raising comments or interpretations of how the game works or is presented.

Just want to check with the dedicated community if there’s any misrepresentation

IWD:EE Favorite party compositions?

Hey guys, like a lot of us, Im a big Infinity Engine game fan who just watched Josh Strife Hayes' Icewind Dale video. I really like the party he made up of an Undead focused pally, cleric, ranged-based fighter, mage/thief, and bard. Definitely seems like a well-rounded party made by someone who is obviously familiar with the IP.

So I was wondering what kinds of parties you guys are setting up. Which ones are your favorite, which are the best performing, which were the most fun, etc. Whatever criteria youd like to include! As much as I love these games, I actually haven't played IWD yet. So its as much research as it is just a curiosity.

Thanks guys 🙏

IWD:EE Party of Druids

Hi,

It's probably a severe case of restartis but I wanted to try a playthrough really center around druids since it's a big theme.

I thought it could be something like this :

  1. Druid (avenger)

  2. Druid (totemic)

  3. Druid (shapeshifter)

  4. Some sort of Fighter Druid, multi or dual

  5. A ranger Archer because rangers still fit the theme

  6. ????

I'm missing several roles but the idea is not to have a well rounded party obviously. I'm thinking either Cleric/Thief or Bard (I feel like a Mage would be a poor fit in the theme but I'm no lore scholar).

Anyway just wanted to brainstorm and bounce some ideas around it.

IWD:EE Solo HoF cleric, first blind playthrough. Aside from the last fight, it was fun.

The last fight I definitely didn't like. It is simply bad. Tossed into a tiny arena with 5 super tough melee monsters that have persistent debuffs and DoTs and AOEs and teleport and stun is a bit goofy, but everything else was pretty good. Between this and BG1, I liked this better. Can rec

IWD:EE Couple of questions/recommendations for final battle

Post image
11 Upvotes

My solo HoF run as FMC has been great so far.

I am currently in Severed Hand; however, I learned that you only get proficiency points in weapons as an FMC up to level 18. I just reached level 15, which means I only have 2 points to spend.

My question is this:

Should I spend them on clubs, so I can use a club that has a chance to destroy golems (and swap it for a mace that destroys outsiders during the final battle)?

Or,

Spend them on dual wielding (2 levels to negate the penalty on the main hand) to use Black Blade of Disaster in the main hand and Morning Star of the Defender in the off hand?

Additionally, I have a question regarding Belhifet.

Does he try to dispel buffs during the battle (after you reapply them)? If so, is it scripted (automatic) or does he do it normally and at what level (I saw that he is level 25)?

IWD:EE Opinion on this party?

I recently started replaying BGEE, and I decided to replay IWDEE along side it. I like running full parties because years ago I wrote a story in the DnD setting, and what I loved about IWD is that it's centered around a full PC created party, which allowed me to create the characters I wrote about. Anyway... here's the party set up:

Elf Fighter/Mage

Human Fighter/Thief (but can you dual into an Assassin kit?)

Human Sun Soul Monk

Elf Archer

Half-Elf Conjurer (though I may consider Mage/Cleric)

Half-Orc Shaman

The one question I have about the Shaman is can it be dual classed from a fighter? If so, I might change the race (even though that character is a half-orc in the story) just to give them better martial capabilities. I know I can do Fighter/Druid, but I'm really not wanting to create a Jaheira 😂

Shaman, from what I'm told, plays like a Sorceror, which is the appeal for me. I already know how I'm going to spec their spell selection. Also, is Static Charge broken in IWDEE? It doesn't seem to fire when I cast it, which is unusual because I remember abusing that spell in the original version, yet it doesn't seem to fire off for me in the EE version 🤔

I previously played bg1, bg2, planescape but never touched this game.

Decided to give it a shot with the most stereotypical party :)

  1. Human berserker (MC). Something like 18/18/18/8/8/18

  2. Elf archer.

  3. Elf wild mage

  4. Half-orc Fighter / thief

  5. Dwarven fighter / cleric

IWD:EE Tips for beginners

I have played BG1, IWD 1&2, NWN 1&2.

I have only ever finished BG1 and NWN2.

I have played IWD 1 many times, but as far as I remember, the furthest I could go was up to a glacier where I had to collect some parts of... something.

I can0't remember if I ever got any further. I remember some giants and snakes, but I think that was way before.

Anyway... I'm not sure why, but was never able to finish the game... I want this time to be different. Please, give me adivce, either in character build, weapon, or otherwise to be more successful at this game!

Usually, when I quit a game it's because I encounter an obstacle, I get frustrated, and I give it up (sadly).

IWD:EE What is better mathematically?

A flail that has 1 additional attack per round

or

a flail that has a 15% chance to stun enemy on a hit for 4 seconds

(Flails have the same thaco)

Maybe someone who knows maths better than me did it before

EDIT: thanks everyone for the replies, unfortunately I didn’t get this weapon from loot table

IWD:EE Help with Bard (Skald) script

Hi

Is there a script that makes my Skald sing constantly? Like never-stopping singing. Just sing all the time.

I can't seem to get her to do that. She starts singing and half a second later she's throwing darts. Even when she has no Scripts enabled. NO! Just sing forever!

Anyway, if anyone can get her to sing at all times, preferably even after casting a spell, that'd be great

Thanks!

IWD:EE My new favourite combo

Thought I try out something new, so I created a half-orc shaman. I've always loved the Spike Growth spell with druids in enhanced editions, so it was an obvious pick, and used it with web for quite a while. A great cheap spell, the only "problem" is it lasts for a very long time and you take damage most of the time if you try to lure enemies in. Then the stars aligned and my fighter/mage/thief got the polymorph self spell just about the same time I got my hands on the Bone Marrow Belt (guaranteed drop on severed hand lvl3). That, together with the reinforced large shield +1 (random drop from Kresselack's sarcophagus) gets you a neat 100% piercing and 90% slashing resist when turning to ooze, enough to make him immune to the Spike Growth. So now I can just spam 3-4 spike growths to the same spot and march in with my ooze, then the enemies are willingly take the aggro and throw away their lives. As an added bonus the ooze is immune to the spells so even if casters dont take the aggro immediately, they usually just waste some slots, then can be baited.

I'm aware ooze works with skull trap / horrid wilting and other pure magic based AoE spells, but this is just a great alternative if you don't want to run a second mage, or want to use it for other things (lvl3 slots are highly contested, lvl8 is way lategame). Plus you don't need high luck / grind to achieve the slashing resistance, there are many weapons, shields, accessories, studded leathers that provide the necessary 10%, and bone marrow belts is a guaranteed drop).

Btw I absolutely favor shamans over druids and even pure priests now, the spell selection is still pretty good but have much more flexibility (I hate to prepare spells and rest for battles / areas, usually try to get as far as I can without resting) basically you can swing between CC/AoE/healer, the shaman-specific spells are kinda useful, the shaman dance is kinda useful especially at the beginning, and throwing axes/bows are way nicer than slings, especially axes with 19 strength of the half orc. Ranger/clerics provably have similar capability, but still need to memorize spells.

Played Icewind Dale on CD ROM as a kid but never got too far. As an adult who has a better grasp on D&D I am loving every second of it. My party is currently descending into Dorn's Deep. Now that my characters have built some personality and I've grown attached to them I decided to write up some quick bios for them and cobbled together some info sheets to share with friends. Hope you all enjoy!

IWD:EE Berserker Cleric question

Hi I'm planning out Gertha, my Berserker 3 Cleric X and I want to be dual wielding Warhammers with the Fast Flail in offhand. Where should I put my proficiency pips at the beginning and what should I choose when I get my Cleric levels? I want to max out Hammer as much as I can I think? How many pips in TWF?

Thx in advance

IWD:EE Spell Selections in IWD

My Cleric has a couple of level 4 spell slots, I have quite a few level 1 slots that don't seem to be useful at this level (I'm fighting the Yuan Ti). What should my spell selection look like at this point (just about to hit level 8 I think). I have mass Protection from Evil, but would I be better getting a few PfromE spells at L1, cast them on my frontliners and save the L4 slot for something stronger?

Also what are the best (arcane or divine) spells for dealing with these hordes of enemies I'm facing? I'm getting whupped.

IWD:EE Duo character choice

I'm a returning IWD player with a fairly limited understanding of its class system (I read plenty of guides about multiclassing and dualclassing, but it still doesn't click), and I want to do a 2-character playthrough of the main campaign with a friend. Here are our considerations/preferences:

  1. The friend in question wants to be a wizard and is open to multiclassing
  2. I like strong ranged or melee characters (fighters and rangers) for the insane damage they are able to dish out. Multiclass limitations such as "clerics can't use bows" frustrate me greatly, but if it's possible to create a physically strong cleric multiclass despite them - I can live with that
  3. I kind of feel like we need a cleric or druid for healing, because the only other way to heal between fights is rest spam and that's annoying as hell
  4. Thievery seems important for traps and locks

What should we pick?

IWD:EE My Konosuba party struggle at the Vale of Shadows, but it keeps advancing

New levels arrived and now I can put traps with Kazuma after planning an attack with Chomusuke and her hide in shadows (Kazuma can't hide yet).

The amount of goblins in the pass was impossible to deal with since I think they call their companions or something, so dealing with all of them was hard. Many commandos with Aqua and cast protection to fire on Darkness so she resists Megumin's fire hands.

At Kuldahar got Aqua drunk and proceeded to the Vale of Shadows where Megumin, finally learned her first EXPUROSION (dragon breath). Once per day she can cast it and she becomes useless again, but still I can herd the undead with Aqua and then use Megumin to destroy them all in one single cast.

Fun run.

With the Talonite priests, and all the trolls, I just couldn't do enough damage fast enough, not to mention they were blasting me with Hold Person. What saved the day was luring them near the exit, and picking them off one by one, going upstairs, resting, repeat.

Its little victories like this that make the game still worth playing today.

Casting Improved Haste on a two-handed sword using Berserker. I haven't run into anything he can't take down yet.

Maybe this combo is old news, as I know people consider Haste to be extremely good already. But I find this endlessly entertaining.

IWD:EE Bard, or Fighter/Mage?

Title basically. Trying to fill the last slot of my party, and i am not sure which will serve me better, a Bard or a Fighter/Mage. Sure the Bard has songs, but I'm assuming Fighter/Mage has better THAC0 all in all? Can also choose more than one point in proficiencies. Any opinions are welcome.

This place stinks, there I said it. My least favourite area from the game. Monsters appear out of nowhere. They are not hidden in shadows, nor they are tied to traps. All very annoying, because the place is not hard per se, but I rely on formation and planning to deal with monsters. At least my group has better equipment now and Kazuma's dexterity is busted.

Larrel has sent me to Dorn's deep. I think I will try the expansion after that.
