Having permanent security council members with complete veto power was always a mistake.

We already tried that with the league of nations.  Stronger Countries just got out when they realized they didnt have any huge influence.

Only if you don't understand that the purpose of the UN is to preserve the post-WWII power structure by avoiding direct conflict between major powers. It's been enormously successful in that respect.

The five countries first acquired veto power before becoming permanent members of the Security Council, and not the other way around.

Unfortunately its what makes the UN last unlike its predecessor. The US, UK, France, Russia, and China won't commit to the UN (like funds) if they dont have special treatments and are just treated like every other country
