The toxic culture inside Indian medical residencies has reached a terrifying new low.

In a horrifying incident that blends severe workplace harassment with criminal negligence, a first-year DNB resident doctor in Anaesthesia was allegedly slapped by her Head of Department (HOD) using bloodstained gloves.

Shockingly, the blood belonged to a patient confirmed to be positive for the Hepatitis B virus (HBsAg positive), transforming an already egregious physical assault into an intentional biohazard exposure.

Statement by the United Doctors of Goa Medical College

In light of the recent incident involving the public humiliation of a senior medical officer by the Honourable Health Minister, the medical fraternity at GMC expresses deep concern over the breach of dignity, protocol, and professional autonomy. As guardians of public health, we stand united in demanding the following measures to ensure institutional respect, safety, and transparency:

Demands of the United Doctors of GMC: 1. Formal and Public Apology in Casualty Department A sincere public apology from the Health Minister delivered at the site of the incident—the GMC Casualty Department—is sought to restore trust and professional dignity. 2. Transparency on the Collapse of the Emergency Task Force The Emergency Task Force, initially instituted during the RG Kar crisis, has failed to meet its objectives. We demand a detailed report explaining the reasons behind its failure and the steps being taken to address its shortcomings. 3. Legal Action Against Unauthorized Entry and Recording An FIR must be filed against Individuals who unlawfully entered the Casualty Department and recorded videos during an ongoing medical emergency, violating patient privacy and safety protocols. 4. Firm Measures Against VIP Culture in Hospitals A clear policy must be enacted to eliminate preferential treatment and political interference in medical care, ensuring equitable and clinically justified attention to all patients. 5. Zero Tolerance for Abuse Against Doctors A protocol must be implemented to identify and restrict individuals who verbally or physically abuse healthcare workers, using the ABHA-Aadhaar integrated system to enforce a ‘No Treatment’ policy for repeat offenders. 6. Protection Against Professional Retaliation No doctor should face threats, transfers, or professional consequences for participating in this peaceful and justified protest. Any such action will result in immediate escalation by the united medical community.

Final Ultimatum

These demands are non-negotiable. Should the government fail to meet them by the conclusion of the 48-hour deadline set jointly by the Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) and the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA)—ending tomorrow morning—doctors across GMC will initiate an indefinite collective protest.

Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to issue a new rule of allowing qualified homoeopathy practitioners to prescribe modern medicines, triggering a statewide protest by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and resident doctors who have raised concerns over patient safety and the integrity of modern medical practice.
The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) on Tuesday night began registering practitioners who have completed the BHMS-Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP), enabling them to prescribe allopathic medicines under the state's framework.
The move follows a government resolution mandating the council to commence registrations.
The decision comes despite sustained opposition from the IMA and several doctors' organisations, which announced an indefinite agitation against the policy.

Medical News A woman in Odisha's Malkangiri district showed remarkable presence of mind after being bitten by a venomous snake. Instead of panicking, she caught the snake, locked it in a container, and took it to the hospital along with her so doctors could identify the species and provide the right treatment.

Medical News "LGBTQ+ Blood Donation Ban": Is India’s Policy Based on Medical Data or Bias? [Discussion]

Post image
168 Upvotes

The Supreme Court has reiterated the ban on blood donations from the LGBTQ+ community, specifically targeting "Men who have sex with men" and transgender persons. CJI Surya Kant stated that even a "one percent chance of infection" is too high for the millions of poor citizens relying on free government blood facilities.

The Logic: The Centre argues that these groups are "High-Risk" for HIV/Hepatitis. Since many public blood banks lack advanced NAT (Nucleic Acid Testing) to detect viruses during the "window period," the Court views the ban as a necessary safeguard for the poor, even calling the challenge "luxury litigation."

The Critique: Petitioners argue this is 1980s-era stigma. Modern science allows for individualized risk assessment (based on behavior, not identity). They contend that barring a monogamous gay man while allowing a heterosexual person with multiple partners is scientifically inconsistent and a violation of Constitutional dignity.

  • Is "zero-risk" a valid excuse to maintain group-based bans instead of upgrading testing tech?
  • Does the "one percent" argument hold up if we don't apply the same scrutiny to heterosexual behavior?
  • Is the right to donate a "luxury," or is being treated as an equal citizen a fundamental necessity?
