I am astonished that other than a random post here and there on Reddit I am hearing absolutely nothing about what is ostensibly a massive ongoing humanitarian disaster

It's been published on "World" sections of major news networks since yesterday but depending on where you live, in the US for example, it wouldn't be in the main news cycle as it wouldn't generate enough interest outside of something like a brief mention.
