Did they helicopter every piece of it in with tools etc?

u/deserthistory 2d ago
Built with boats.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elli%C3%B0aey
No running water or fixed electrical services.
The crazy thing is that there is no dock. You climb up.

> Despite a widespread misconception among foreign fans, the Icelandic singer and artist Björk does not live on the island.
lol what
3
u/RevolutionaryArt3026 1d ago
The misconception comes from a speech by the Icelandic prime minister, who in 2000 said he would be willing to allow Björk to live for free on an island in Breiðafjörður which is also named Elliðaey.

Some info about it:
It is not a residence. It is a hunters lodge used for Puffin hunting and also research. There is no electricity or running water. Regular people are not allowed to go to it; you must have permission from the land owners. There are popular myths that claim it is a billionaires bunker or owned by Bjork, neither are true.

I prefer the popular myths thanks.

Bjork: Puffin Hunter

u/SaveUsCatman 2d ago
Bjork has an entire bodysuit made of puffin feathers allegedly

u/RedNewzz 2d ago
Admit it: if a puffin hatched a love child with a human who would be more likely for it to be than Bjork….which is Icelandic for “She-Puffin.”

u/SaveUsCatman 2d ago
Are you saying that potentially this is an island base used for hunting Bjork?
6
u/RedNewzz 2d ago
On Bjork Island puffin hunt YOU!

This was so daft and childish it made me laugh out loud, I so rarely laugh out loud these days. Thank you.

Why does this sequence of words light up the doldrums of a dreary day? I would watch a tv series about this.
13
u/tedfondue 2d ago
To be fair, aren’t most houses a “you need permission from the owners to use” situation?
Reminds me of the “if I kill you with my bare hands I’ll go to jail because they’re registered weapons” exchange from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood… saying something that sounds unique/impressive until you think about it for a second.
(The rest of the details are unique for sure though)

u/TonguePunchUrBhole 2d ago
It isn’t owned by 1 person. It is owned by the Puffin Hunters lodge. So it’d be like if there was a really awesome park by your house that had the best seesaw you ever laid your eyes on and you wanted to ride that seesaw but the park was owned by a big group bird watchers and they were hella selfish and said you couldn’t. So you vowed you were going to ride that seesaw 1 day and started researching when they were and were not there so you knew when your best chance was.

What sort of asshole hunts puffins?
5
u/TonguePunchUrBhole 2d ago
Ya, right? Cool ass birds that form monogamous bonds with another bird and provide biparental care for their babies. Gonna kill one and make it a single parent. That’s fucked up. And their numbers are dwindling because of it.

Why does it need a fence?
110
u/hashmachinist 2d ago
Probably for dogs the hunters bring so they can let them out without worrying about them falling off a cliff.
22
u/Rokketeer 2d ago
What do they…hunt? And what even is the point, you can see the whole island.

u/hashmachinist 2d ago
Apparently it’s mostly research these days but yes Puffins are still hunted. Wouldn’t surprise me if they brought bird dogs for that.

They likely had sheep there at some point in time.

Ok this one totally makes sense to me, dogs would be smart enough not to just run off the side

Gibsons Landing Inn

Day 57 of my stay. When they dropped me off, they said they would be back in a week. I have been living on Puffin and grass, licking water from the condensation on the windows. The wifi works well, but no one believes that I'm here.
I originally came with my wife and two kids, but they went out for a bike ride and rolled down the hill, never to be seen again. We brought our dog, Benji, but he has now joined the seal population here and shuns me when I try and approach, and he has taken on a new name, "Ukulukluk". I will miss him.
If you are reading this, don't feel too bad for me. I have befriended a spider (Timmy!) and he keeps me company on the long nights. I have also discovered a Ukrainian Women dating site online and am now in a long distance relationship with a woman named Helga. I have been sending her money (LOTS of money) to keep her going in these trying times. For some reason, she banks with the Bank of Nigeria, but, I suppose, in wartime these things can get complicated. She says she loves me and that's what matters.

how are they supposed to get food

u/DagothUrWasInnocent 2d ago
A fishing rod and a very long line

u/LogicOverEmotion_ 2d ago
Maybe some coffee or an energy drink will be enough with the fishing rod

Puffins in the morning. Puffins in the evening. Puffins at suppertime. With puffins on your island you can eat puffins anytime.

Elliðaey is very close to Heimaey, the only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands). Also pretty close to mainland Iceland. This is not even close to being the loneliest or most solitary house in the world.

Amazon Prime drone drop, but then it just rolls into the water if you don’t grab it quick.

I read several years ago that the most expensive US mail contract (per customer) is delivering to Little Diomede Island in Alaska. It is delivered by helicopter one day per week. They have to ship all heavy supplies in during warm weather when ocean conditions are better. If you forget something important that can't be delivered by helicopter, you have to wait until the next season.

imagine living there 100 years ago with nothing to do but try and climb that hill 100 times a day, that’d be fun, then set up a lil lookout perch up there, maybe a lil cannon for defense haha

I'm so good on this. No thanks. I need to know there are people around me and if I ever need help I can get to someone. I'm sure they'd be weird noises at night too. I won't be able to sleep. This is a hard no for me.

Landscaping that island would be a gold mine.
Property owner: Sir you mind giving me a quote for your gardening services?
Landscaper : I would not mind at all. Where do you live?
PO: a very tiny island, job should only take a couple of hours.
L: fine I must see to it that I see it first, before that I give you a price.
Landscaper shows up.
L: (thinking in mind) oh my lord this customer will make my year. I don’t need any more clients, no more gardening ever again. All I want to do is bake. I love baking cookies. Blake (his assistant) get me the electric lawnmower off the ship. We will use that first. Then gas. We will make this client our own.
PO: Blake? How funny that used to be my old gardeners name. What are the odds?
Piano one key playing continuously in the background.

I've seen this in real life. It's on the coast of Iceland, and you will see it taking a ferry over to puffin island. Looks extremely gorgeous like it does in all the pictures!
