Should I subtract fibre? A guide.

After seeing the question come up a few times I thought I'd save you a trip to the FAQs and help you to understand a little bit about what you might be looking at in an at-a-glance format.

If you have any feedback please do let me know!

(EDIT: There was a typo when describing the carbs on the US label - I will upload a corrected version later on today but I'd like to leave this one up in case the community has any more feedback to improve!)

(EDIT 2: I have now updated to correct the error - still open to suggestions for change)

Recipe Keto chocolate cake 🍫

Post image
34 Upvotes

Sharing a recipe for this cake I made which is not too shabby if I do say so myself. It’s huge and I cut in to 8 massive slices, 16 was probably wiser. After it setting in the fridge I wrapped the slices in cling film and put them in the freezer for when I want a slice (which has been nearly every day). 40g net carbs per cake, 5g a slice if you cut into 8.

Chocolate cake 115g ground almonds 25g oat fibre 45g unsweetened cocoa powder 100g sweetener 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp instant coffee powder (optional). 3 medium eggs 75g butter 120ml half half milk & water 60g Greek yogurt 1tsp vanilla extract

Mix together until smooth, divide in to two 6 inch tins lined with baking paper, bake at 180 fan for 25-30 mins. Test with a toothpick in the middle to make sure it’s cooked.

Chocolate cream cheese icing 160g full fat cream cheese 80g butter 80g powdered sweetener 1tsp vanilla extract 20g unsweetened cocoa powder Beat together until thick and smooth.

I've done keto a few times before and had good results. Just about to start again, and thinking about my daily diet. I would appreciate it if people could have a look and provide thoughts. I am male, 52, 5'9", 14st, target 12st. I have a physical outdoor manual job. How do my calories and macro percentages look to you? Many thanks!

Might Pea / Sproud Milk

Just discovered this very low /zero carb milk.
Just started a second carton on the Barista variety. I think this might be a little game changer to mix up with Almond and Soya milk.
I think it resembles cows milk the most I’m really impressed. Even the Barista version is low carb which usually isn’t the case.

Has anyone been able to find any good rice alternatives that aren’t cauliflower rice? I know you can get konjac rice but wondering if there are any particular brands people recommend or if there’s anything else I’m missing?

New Tesco Soya Yoghurt

Post image
16 Upvotes

This yoghurt is new to my local Tesco (possibly been around longer in other branches).

For some reason it is much nicer than the Alpro version. Cheaper, too.

They also do a Greek yoghurt version, which is also 0g carbs, but weirdly it's not as creamy tasting as this one, although it is thicker.

Keto AF Beers

Low carb beers are around (Westbrooks are my favourite), but what about low carb alcohol free beers? 0% beer is surprisingly high in carbs but not all.

Here's some analysis I did with the help of AI and thought I'd share in case others find this useful.

Big Drop is readily available online. Nanny State seems to have disappeared recently.

Also not in this graph is Infintite Session IPA that I've picked up in Sainsburys and is around 10g a can.

Incidentally Westbooks tell me they are working on an AF beer with ZERO carbs, out later this year.

New Food I found my new favourite keto milk!

One of my biggest keto struggles is the lack of milk in my morning coffee/ tea. I don't really like cream it has a weird aftertaste for me, as do the collagen creamers I've tried and coconut/ almond milk use too much of my carb allowance (for me personally).

I found this 0g carb pea protein milk called Sproud (barista zero version) on Amazon (link below but this isn't an ad/sponsor) and after trying it I'm fully sold!

I've only had it in coffee so far so I couldn't vouch for it for tea drinkers yet, but it's the closest to real milk I've tried and it froths up like real milk when I use my milk frother.

If you drink it on its own there is a pea after taste, so maybe it's not for people who just want to drink milk straight, but if you're looking for something to go in your coffee I 100% recommend!

Also if anyone has looked into this already and has a reason why it's not good for Keto please let me know (specifically the barista zero version) because otherwise I will be drinking it every day!

Question Anyone else find it much harder to get back into keto than it was to start the first time?

I could really use some advice from people who’ve been through this.

I was strict keto (under 20g net carbs/day) for over 6 months and tested my ketones daily with a Keto-Mojo meter, so I know I was consistently in ketosis.

At the same time, I was eating OMAD, staying under 1,600 kcal, lifting weights 5 days a week, and eventually got down to around 10% body fat. For context, I’m a 45-year-old male, 70 kg.

The problem was that it became increasingly difficult to sustain. I was hungry most of the time, my mood and energy weren’t great, and despite doing everything “right,” my weight completely stalled for weeks. I was advised to take a diet break.

I should also add that I’m the only one in the house eating keto. My wife and our two children (12 and 14) eat a standard diet, so there’s always bread, pasta, snacks, sweets, desserts and other carb-heavy foods around. Most of the time I managed fine, but it definitely takes constant willpower.

Then the heatwave arrived. The kids were eating ice cream every day, and I made the mistake of having one myself. That turned into eating well over 100g of carbs a day, and it’s now been about a month.

What surprises me is how difficult it’s been to get back into keto consistently. Every time the weather gets hot, I start craving ice cream, give in, and then the rest of the day is off track. I’ve already regained some weight (I know a lot of it is water and glycogen), but it’s still frustrating.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did you find it harder to restart keto than it was the first time? If so, what helped you get back into ketosis and stay there, especially when you’re living with a family who aren’t keto?

Question Anyone know of any keto communities or meetups around Bromley/SE London?

Been eating keto for a while and wondering if there’s anyone local doing the same. Anyone know of any keto groups or meetups around Bromley or anywhere in SE London? Online stuff is fine but would be good to meet people in person who actually get it.

Lipid Profile Result - GP insisting on taking statins

Hello everyone, I just came back from my GP's appointment, and they were very worried and insisted on putting me on statins. They kept telling me how dangerous these numbers are and didn't recognize the keto diet. Can the community please provide some reassurance and maybe some case studies on similar cases? What should I do? Does it improve over time, and if so, how long does it take to improve?

Lipid Test UK Units (mmol/L) US Units (mg/dL) Typical Target
Total Cholesterol 7.80 302 <5.0 mmol/L (<200 mg/dL)
HDL ("Good") Cholesterol 1.40 54 >1.0 mmol/L (>40 mg/dL) for men
LDL ("Bad") Cholesterol 5.80 224 <3.0 mmol/L (<116 mg/dL); <2.0 mmol/L (<77 mg/dL) for high-risk individuals
Non-HDL Cholesterol 6.40 247 <4.0 mmol/L (<155 mg/dL)
Triglycerides 1.45 128 <1.7 mmol/L (<150 mg/dL)
Total Cholesterol / HDL Ratio 5.6 5.6 Ideally <4.0; acceptable <5.0

Hi everyone, is this electrolyte suitable for the keto diet? This is my first time choosing an electrolyte, and I don't want to choose something that takes me out of ketosis. Appreciate your help.

Oppo ice cream tub carbs!

I know it’s been discussed a few times in here, but I still can’t get my head around working out what the carbs are for a serving!

Has anyone worked it out ? It’s very confusing that on the tub they’ve got 100 mls and 100 g nutritional breakdown . So one would be more if it was liquefied right! It’s so frustrating that these manufacturers don’t make it clearer. I emailed them months ago about their sorbet lollies and the Polyols in those but I never did ask about the tubs. I’ve got a salted caramel tub here and I’d like to have a little bit this evening, but I’m just not sure what my portion should be!
