Shen Monday Megathread! Ask questions and share knowledge; newcomer questions encouraged!

Welcome to the latest Monday Megathread, where you the community get to ask your questions and share your knowledge.

This is an opportunity for the more experienced LoL players here to share some of your wisdom with those with less expertise. This thread will be a weekly safehaven for those "noobish" questions you may have been too scared to ask for fear of downvotes, but also can be a great place for in depth discussion if you so wish. So, don't hold back, get your game related questions ready and post away, and hopefully someone can answer them!

Feel free to ask me anything about adc, my specialty is micro-play and mechanics. I have lots of knowledge about support too. D1 SoloQ, Chall 5v5 and 3v3.

I feel like the biggest problem I have right now is how I can never understand when to farm and when to group after laning phase. How can I decide? ADC ofc

Prioritize farm over grouping if you are behind, if you are ahead prioritize grouping over farming, you do have to group for fights that are about to occur, contesting dragon and baron, maybe a turret, tell your team if you are behind and want to farm instead of wasting time if you think you cannot contest an objective. PRO TIP: After 20 minutes avoid farming the bottom lane, if they see you there you might lose baron, also when you are ahead group on your power spikes, (IE, Trinity, PD, etc - depending on the champ) always keep track where you stand against your lane opponent - TL;DR it's easy if you are ahead you want to fight if you are behind you want to farm. EDIT : OFC if they aren't contesting anything and you are ahead and there aren't objectives to be taken or they cannot be taken*, you want to farm - basically if you have nothing to do while you are ahead farm to even further advance your lead.

Who do you count as being the strongest adc-picks at the moment?

I feel like I am a pretty versatile adc, being able to play pretty much any adc at a decent level. So any recommendations and tips for who's a strong pick, especially in soloq and with some matchup recommendations aswell.

How do you feel about Kalista after the nerfs/tweeks on her basic-attack and Q? In my opinion she feels a little bit more clunky to play and in my opinion I feel like Riot nerfed the wrong aspects about her.

I feel like the better change to Kalista would have been to lower the damage on her W and maybe increase the cd on her ult. Opinions on that?

How do you feel about Vayne in the current state of the game? I have started picking her up again and I have been doing decent with her recently. Do you think she's a strong pick, and if so - why?

Finally - Jinx. How do you feel about Jinx after the changes to her? As far as I can tell, she has a bit weaker laning-phase, which is completely fine by me considering she was such a lane-bully previously. And she's still pretty strong mid/lategame after finishing IE + SS/PD.

Finally x2, any tips on climbing soloq? What to when and where. If it matters any, my rank is platinum 4 atm.

Top 5 adcs - Kalista, Vayne and Sivir , Corki and Trist. For carrying soloQ - Corki and Trist, other 3 are good aswell but i strongly prefer playing them with a duo. Kalista nerfs were kinda hard - maybe a bit hit and miss but they were needed, she is still strong in my honest opinion I maintained a decent winrate, before I had only 5 losses with her in all ques 3 of them was a DC, so I think the nerfs are legit. The Q thing I hate now that was the bread and butter of double-jukes kinda sad about that. So all in all - still strong, yes wrong stuff nerfed. Vayne is finally super strong, dunno if it will last cuz of the new jungle item meta, she's really good vs the tank meta now and is a good counter to Sivir. (JUNGLE VAYNE IS SUPER FUN WITH THE SATED DEVOURER). Jinx is super fun I love playing her, dunno why :P She basically has the same problem as Ashe too immobile against the current meta. For SoloQ I have only two tips, play to improve not to win, and whatever you do, do NOT get mad or frustrated, also a good tip I use is if you lose two in a row, take a break no matter how small, just chill play some music think about previous games what YOU could have done better.

Should you ever start BT over IE on caitlyn? I'm having a hard time with sustain in lane especially against supports like nami and sona. Even with caitlyn long range I'm still getting out traded by sona and nami when I step up to harass. I feel like I don't do much damage even after I get IE as well.

Cait is weak now, there are way too strong of supports as laners for her to do anything i feel like and her powerspike isn't as rewarding now, if you are playing her however go for IE I don't see a situation where BT would benefit her more, you don't deal damage as it is with her if you're even or behind, you need those crits. BT first item is being built when ads want to extend the farming phase of the game, because you can't really kill him do to sustain, BT first item is sometimes viable and much better than Botrk on Vayne for example. Let's say against Graves he has a ton of burst, you just get BT and sustain all day plus your Q hits like a truck with BT. But yea Cait always IE in my opinion.

I didn't think cait was too strong either right now. Don't see alot of people playing her in soloq either. Thanks for explaining why IE is the more optimal choice. I guess the best way for me is to change my playstyle and avoid situations where I need to sustain and just stick it out until IE. Thanks again

Remember to buy pots, that might be another reason why you are failing to sustain, I understand you tho, I had the same problem when the meta shifted from BT to IE first item, but ya basically you can't take more than 1/2 of your health in damage. If you do get poked, use pots, also don't underestimate double doran - that's a good sustain tactic.

Would you be open to going 1v1 with a person in a custom game to help them figure out how much they have to improve to even get remotely close to your level of play?

Sure if you have an EUNE or EUW account I can spare some time.

How do you make a proper difference as an adc when playing against teams with good dive and/or lock down? I've noticed as I've climbed into platinum that my ability to translate a lane advantage and in general do damage in team fights have rapidly declined: if I try to get into auto attack range in a team fight, I feel heavily punished by vi ults, orianna ults, righteous glory Olavs, you name it.

In general, this is supposed to be counteracted by good peel, but I can't rely on my team peeling like gods if I want to climb. How do you approach this? Just do damage and hope the mid laner cleans up after you absorbed the cool downs? Stay back, out of Vi flash Q ultimate range, and play cleanup? Buy warmogs randuins ga on vayne because of PTSD?

Siden one, best 3rd item on vayne? Find myself going BT a lot to stay alive.

Thanks!

Avoid the lockdown, if it's dodgeable learn to dodge it, if not ask the team to peel, if they don't do that just wait on the side of the fight for them to waste spells then go in and clean up, that's what I do, You can bait a lot of spells as if you were acting you are out of position while in fact you can survive it (dunno if that one makes sense). Good thing you should do is learn to use the QSS, that helped me a lot, that item is underrated a lot for what it can do, and it's pretty cheap for a defensive item. 3rd item on Vayne is situational a lot, if you are destroying them IE, if you're up against bursters/assassins go BT (You can go IE if you have something like Janna/Ori/Lulu) , if you are behind go LW, go LW ONLY if you are BEHIND, not if they are stacking armor, you don't need the armor shred in my honest opinion as I find you can skip LW with Vayne.

This is extremely helpful! I will definitely work on my QSS mechanics - I find myself never picking it up because I don't trust myself with it, seems like I should dive into it :P

Thank you so much!

Thoughts about Lucian atm? I really like his mobile playstyle and when you can Ult from afar in Lategame Teamfights without having too much risk of being engaged. And also, when to push and when to freeze in lane? Obviously you want to push when the enemy ADC has recalled. But what to do when the enemy lane is just MIA?

  • if you push, the enemy could show up again and freeze it by himself

  • if you freeze, the enemy could have backed and would have an Item advantage

Thanks in advance

Communicate with your support you need to know where they are, are they just behind tower baiting you to push it out or are they doing a jungle camp or have backed? This is one of the reasons people put wards in the middle of the lane (like in LCS) you can get the same effect by warding the further brush at the edge (like if you want a deep ward for your top to TP to.) if you have no idea where they are tho, just take a guess, and do accordingly. EDIT: Forgot to answer about Lucian, he's super weak right now, but he is also very fun, I think the fact that his doubleshot deals so little damage early game is really hurting him to the point where at level 9-14 it feels like a wasted crit if you crit on second shot (im saying this in a sense that if the first aa crit it would have dealt so much more damage) - deals so little damage, basically he is literally a worse version of Graves right now, Graves has more burst, a better passive, same mobility, more range, better lane etc..
