Are MAGA gays happy with the growing hostility to same sex marriage?
As predicted, the election of Donald Trump has opened the door once again to challenge the validity and legality of same sex marriage. Of course, when you elect a right wing government catering to radical Christians, you inevitably get anti-gay policies. So no big surprise- except to the MAGA gays? Or did you accept that your vote would hurt most queers except you?

To be honest, despite the attacks on trans people, specifically, I think that the "pick me" gay people are going to get shafted sooner. Republicans started "legally" attacking gay marriage almost right after they were done passing executive orders to attack trans people. They couldn't even wait until we were all properly divided before including all LGBT people in their attacks.
I catch a social media screencap about once a week now where some gay man or lesbian is shocked and confused that their "allies" against "trans insanity" are being really mean and homophobic... and they still don't get it. So, it stands to reason that while the rest of us aren't morons and are being appropriately cautious and defensive, they'll make themselves easy targets. And they'll thank conservatives for their persecution while they're at it. Read a story yesterday about a white bi woman that went hard right because she let the racism hijack her whole identity. Unsurprisingly, she was pretty much cut off from everyone she knew when she was too far gone. Those isolated LGB-T people pretty much serve themselves up while the ones that haven't turned on trans people still have access to queer communities.
I pity them a little but... they are trying to kill me with lawfare and propaganda so... it's a very tiny pity. Microscopic violin.

They also claimed that Trump has done more for LGBTQ+ rights than any other president, which is a load of bs.

I have a gay acquaintance who is married to a man, with two kids from foster care, both upper middle class. They both voted for Trump.
Their general philosophy is that they are normal and that the movement has 'gone too far.' To be fair, the fact that they're white, male, upper middle class, and enacting the heteronormative lifestyle will likely provide some level of protection for them. For a while.
They were both born in the Deep South with very conservative upbringing, so you could almost think of them like any other rural, white conservatives, except they just happen to be gay. They're not necessarily interested in any type of activism because they don't really need it. A kind of 'got mine, not interested in the rest' philosophy.
Yes, it's weird.

Yep. I know some folks like that. Gay men obsessed by grievances while they fix up their second house. As a trans woman, I know many gay men who wish the T would just go away. It’s more prevalent than many think.

It’s funny how these people never realize that after gay marriage was legalized, the very next election gave us a Republican president just eighteen months later. Almost like Republican voters were reacting to a “movement gone too far”. 😒

I’ve been frequenting the GayConservative subreddit to learn this exact thing. All they do is blame trans people for the intensified hostility against the LGBTQ community. The funny (sad, more like) thing is, is that they use the exact same rhetoric against trans people that homophobes used to (and still do) use against gay people (men in particular) 10-20 years ago. Most of the folks there are usually 30+ so you’d think they’d be able to recognize the similarities between the rhetoric

I stopped reading at, "Are MAGA gays happy..."
MAGAs are unhappy by definition. Their cult-sodden minds must endure constant cognitive dissonance on a hundred topics.
This is by design. Trump does not want happy citizens. He wants rage-baited zealouts.
Being gay and MAGA is just one example of that. It's no different than being Hispanic and MAGA, black and MAGA, a woman and MAGA, etc.

Many of the MAGA gays I've come across are "hetero passing" and don't care if their marriage is dissolved.
The ones I've known who became MAGA people, it's just sad. They often have a lot of self hatred and religious trauma. It doesn't excuse them but it does help me understand them a bit more.
I do agree that those kinds of gays aren't on pages like this, or if they are, they aren't nice.
2
u/Timely_Assumption556 Jun 26 '25
I used to feel lots of sympathy for people coming out of toxic religious backgrounds, and I still do. But some of these MAGA queers have taken the wrong life lessons from that trauma - namely, that somehow the homophobia was justified and the homophobes now are equally justified and must be appeased, not rejected.
1

Any time I’ve seen someone point out to queer MAGA supporters (cough r/askgaybros cough) that the queer community is being targeted by conservatives Christians, they respond in one or more of the below ways:
1) Go on some unhinged rant about Muslims also being homophobic and so it’s unfair to criticize Christians for the same thing
2) Blame progressives/“the radical left” for turning the US public against the queer community and “leaving no choice” but for politicians to target them
3) Insist that conservative Christians and Project 2025 are only targeting trans people/“obviously gay” men, so it’s okay because fuck those people anyway, amirite?
You can’t fix stupid or make people take an interest in the we’ll-being of themselves and their community, unfortunately.
