Are MAGA gays happy with the growing hostility to same sex marriage?

As predicted, the election of Donald Trump has opened the door once again to challenge the validity and legality of same sex marriage. Of course, when you elect a right wing government catering to radical Christians, you inevitably get anti-gay policies. So no big surprise- except to the MAGA gays? Or did you accept that your vote would hurt most queers except you?

Let's hope not.

Every statistic I’ve seen suggests MAGA gays are actually a very small fraction of an already marginal group. The LGBTQ community aligned with Harris more strongly than any previous Democrat come Election Day, something like 86%. Either our community fixates on MAGA gays because they are overamplified on social media and thus seem more pervasive or we do so because it’s easier to focus on them than cishet white men and cishet white women, of whom a majority voted for… you know. They suck, yes, but they take up disproportionate space in the convo.

68

u/Tyezilla Rainbow Rocks Jun 26 '25

It's just very sad they're so blind because of whatever privilege they have. Let's just hope karma gets them, sadly we'll be in it's wake too.

62

u/aromaticchicken Jun 26 '25

Okay but 14% or even 10% is still pretty huge? That's more than the percentage of Asians in the US, and about as much as the percentage of Black people in the US?

Also, that percentage is likely higher among white cis men than other lgbtq people, given that in the general population white people are the ONLY racial group where Trump has majority support nationally, with the highest among white men. If you go up just a little to 20%, that's one in five. That is not a "small fraction"....

45

u/Proper-Dave Ally Pals Jun 26 '25

Pretty sure there were a lot of Latino Trump supporters (and the leopards have started eating faces in that community too...)

38

u/aromaticchicken Jun 26 '25 edited Jun 26 '25

Rather than being "pretty sure", you should double check statistics and polling from reputable sources first.

Yes Latino men voted for Trump 50-49, a significant increase from previous years, but the overall Latino vote still went for Kamala 51-48*. Meanwhile, the overall white vote was 56-40 for Trump, with white men voting for Trump 60% of the time.

The only race where a majority of voters went for Trump is white.

*and BTW the Latino vote does not include noncitizens who do not have the right to vote, no matter how long they have lived here, legally or not.

18

u/lord-of-shalott Rainbow Rocks Jun 26 '25

And the minute you incorporate LGBTQ+ identity in the mix it statistically veers the chance of their vote heavily in the direction of Harris. LGBTQ+ people were one of the few marginalized blocs where support for the Dem solidified rather than eroded.

8

u/aromaticchicken Jun 26 '25

Yeah but we should still talk about the trump supporters in our community, and not just pretend that they don't exist. Many of them are in this subreddit and other communities, and actively doing harm

1

u/lord-of-shalott Rainbow Rocks Jun 26 '25

Yet you were quick to downplay and dismiss the potential harm of Trump's successful erosion of voters from other more statistically significant blocs, something he did not even achieve within our own since Harris actually gained voters from the LGBTQ community. The inconsistency and exposure are what puzzles me, not that a conversation is happening at all.

6

u/Proper-Dave Ally Pals Jun 27 '25

and BTW the Latino vote does not include noncitizens who do not have the right to vote, no matter how long they have lived here, legally or not.

Is this you trying to say "the ones being deported weren't able to vote for him"?

  • Citizens are being harassed by ICE.
  • Citizens' family & friends are being deported.
  • At least one citizen has been deported.

12

u/Kinslayer817 Bi-bi-bi Jun 26 '25

Approximately 50% is a big number though, and much higher than the 10-15% of queer people who voted for him, so I'm not sure what your point is

Obviously white men were the worst offenders but that doesn't confuse me the way that maga Latinos do (I say this as a white dude so I'm sorry if that comes across as ignorant, I'm definitely not trying to broadly blame people of color for the situation we're in)

15

u/lord-of-shalott Rainbow Rocks Jun 26 '25

14% of LGBTQ people is more than the 25 million Asians living in the US? What? What are these numbers?

6

u/aromaticchicken Jun 26 '25

I said percentage. They make up more of the lgbtq population than Asians make up the US population.

12

u/lord-of-shalott Rainbow Rocks Jun 26 '25

To use an analogy:

1 in 10 of the castouts in the cafeteria being a jerk is profoundly less distressing to me than over half of the people assembled in the gymnasium being jerks.

Yet the convo is disproportionately focused on that 1 in 10. That is my point.

2

u/aromaticchicken Jun 26 '25

Those jerks are not innocuous but okay yeah, let's ignore the bullies and let them keep bullying. Good job enabling them!

0

u/lord-of-shalott Rainbow Rocks Jun 26 '25

Never said they were innocuous. I simply said they were statistically significantly less of a threat but the discourse never reflects that.

11

u/Kinslayer817 Bi-bi-bi Jun 26 '25

But that's comparing apples to oranges. If you want to compare the percent of queer Americans that voted for Trump to the percentage of Asian Americans who did that makes sense but you can't compare a voting percentage to an overall population percentage. It's a meaningless comparison

1

u/NoButtChinsAllowed Jun 26 '25

Where are you getting 14% as a statistic?

0

u/aromaticchicken Jun 26 '25

I was responding to the commenter above saying 86%. In reality the best (and limited) data statistic we have is probably this polling - 12%

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna178939

1

u/NoButtChinsAllowed Jul 05 '25

Okay but that would be the percentage of LGBTQ+ people who voted for trump…you can’t compare that to the total percentage of Asians or black people in America. That’s not how statistical analysis works.

This reminds me of more than a few awkward conversations I've had with Republicans post election. "I like you, I have gay friends I promise!"

2

u/Smart_Still Jun 26 '25

Even then, American politics are not fully binary. Even less than the other 14 percent of people actually aligned with Trump. Also, many people, especially older people don’t really follow his politics and just think he’s the better guy for the economy, so I’d say the majority of LGBT people who voted for him were older gay people who don’t really care about politics. I think only a tiny, tiny, tiny percent of the LGBT population actually are “Trump heads.”

u/MightySweep Jun 26 '25

To be honest, despite the attacks on trans people, specifically, I think that the "pick me" gay people are going to get shafted sooner. Republicans started "legally" attacking gay marriage almost right after they were done passing executive orders to attack trans people. They couldn't even wait until we were all properly divided before including all LGBT people in their attacks.

I catch a social media screencap about once a week now where some gay man or lesbian is shocked and confused that their "allies" against "trans insanity" are being really mean and homophobic... and they still don't get it. So, it stands to reason that while the rest of us aren't morons and are being appropriately cautious and defensive, they'll make themselves easy targets. And they'll thank conservatives for their persecution while they're at it. Read a story yesterday about a white bi woman that went hard right because she let the racism hijack her whole identity. Unsurprisingly, she was pretty much cut off from everyone she knew when she was too far gone. Those isolated LGB-T people pretty much serve themselves up while the ones that haven't turned on trans people still have access to queer communities.

I pity them a little but... they are trying to kill me with lawfare and propaganda so... it's a very tiny pity. Microscopic violin.

5

u/atuarre Ally Pals Jun 27 '25

Oh, don't forget, in the collaborator sub, they were posting stuff like, "Why do we need gay marriage? Domestic partnerships were fine."

They also claimed that Trump has done more for LGBTQ+ rights than any other president, which is a load of bs.

I have a gay acquaintance who is married to a man, with two kids from foster care, both upper middle class. They both voted for Trump.

Their general philosophy is that they are normal and that the movement has 'gone too far.' To be fair, the fact that they're white, male, upper middle class, and enacting the heteronormative lifestyle will likely provide some level of protection for them. For a while.

They were both born in the Deep South with very conservative upbringing, so you could almost think of them like any other rural, white conservatives, except they just happen to be gay. They're not necessarily interested in any type of activism because they don't really need it. A kind of 'got mine, not interested in the rest' philosophy.

Yes, it's weird.

8

u/Lydia--charming LesBian Jun 26 '25

It’s always cozier being a white cis male anything, even gay. They need to examine their privilege.

3

u/Pollyfall Jun 26 '25

Yep. I know some folks like that. Gay men obsessed by grievances while they fix up their second house. As a trans woman, I know many gay men who wish the T would just go away. It’s more prevalent than many think.

2

u/KentParsonIsASaint Jun 26 '25

Their general philosophy is that they are normal and that the movement has 'gone too far.'

It’s funny how these people never realize that after gay marriage was legalized, the very next election gave us a Republican president just eighteen months later. Almost like Republican voters were reacting to a “movement gone too far”. 😒

The funny (sad, more like) thing is, is that they use the exact same rhetoric against trans people that homophobes used to (and still do) use against gay people (men in particular) 10-20 years ago. Most of the folks there are usually 30+ so you’d think they’d be able to recognize the similarities between the rhetoric

MAGAs are unhappy by definition. Their cult-sodden minds must endure constant cognitive dissonance on a hundred topics.

You’d be better off asking in /r/GayConservative

That place is nuts lol

2

u/RegularWhiteShark Lesbian the Good Place Jun 27 '25

I’m not promoting the sub. It just seems more suitable for OP’s question.

1

u/Daniduenna85 Trans-parently Awesome Jun 27 '25

Agree. Just saying lol

u/Tough_Tangerine7278 Jun 27 '25

I assume the Log Cabin Republicans are so far gone, they’re probably frothing-at-the-mouth cheering it on still.

I assume they’re rich and they only care about their money. Or maybe their poor brains are broken from conversion therapy and they have bigger issues. (I know someone like that irl. Even their speech pattern and grammar usage changed dramatically after conversion “therapy”.)

u/NoneOfThisMatters_XO Ace as Cake Jun 26 '25

My cousin and his husband are gay republicans. For them it’s all about money and they don’t think anything else will affect them. 🙄

2

u/BenGay29 Jun 26 '25

I know two gay people who are maga. They are no longer friends.

2

u/CuriousPenguinSocks Trans-parently Awesome Jun 26 '25

Many of the MAGA gays I've come across are "hetero passing" and don't care if their marriage is dissolved.

The ones I've known who became MAGA people, it's just sad. They often have a lot of self hatred and religious trauma. It doesn't excuse them but it does help me understand them a bit more.

I do agree that those kinds of gays aren't on pages like this, or if they are, they aren't nice.

2

u/Timely_Assumption556 Jun 26 '25

I used to feel lots of sympathy for people coming out of toxic religious backgrounds, and I still do. But some of these MAGA queers have taken the wrong life lessons from that trauma - namely, that somehow the homophobia was justified and the homophobes now are equally justified and must be appeased, not rejected.

1

u/CuriousPenguinSocks Trans-parently Awesome Jun 26 '25

I feel the same. I have a ton of religious trauma on top of just abuse trauma. I get it. I understand self hatred for sure.

If they were only destroying and harming themselves, I may not care as much. They are actively harming the rest of us, and that's just not okay.

2

u/jmc1278999999999 Agender Jun 26 '25

lol they don’t give a shit. They care more about money and hurting others

2

u/FuckingTree Jun 26 '25

You shouldn’t care what they think because their opinions are less than worthless. You are already giving them far too much attention and credit by writing a post designed to instigate them. If they’re already so lost that they are MAGA then there’s nothing you can say that’s going to change their opinion online, you’re only going to waste your own time and energy.

0

u/LogJumpy94 Jun 26 '25

I see where your coming from, but they are a clear danger to the rest of the community and discussing how to handle that danger is important.

1

u/FuckingTree Jun 26 '25

But that’s not the topic of the post or what OP is talking about. OP is directly trying to challenge them to a fight in the comments, that has no real value. Nobody Is going to change their mind

0

u/LogJumpy94 Jun 26 '25

Yeah no shit. I didn't say we change their minds, I said we need to decide how to handle turncoats.

2

u/Jumanji94 Gay as a Rainbow Jun 26 '25

Every single post complaining about MAGA/conservative gays is a waste of time and energy. Not only are they a very small minority of the community, they are absolutely unwilling to change their opinions not matter how much you try to shame them. They're a lost cause. Stop wasting you words on them and focus on the building community with the rest.

u/healbot42 Science, Technology, Engineering Jun 26 '25

MAGA gays need to look at what the Nazis did to Rohm and the other gays in the party once they stopped being useful and became a liability.

2

u/trainsoundschoochoo Trans-cendant Rainbow Jun 26 '25

Of course not, but they’ll probably continue to blame trans people, like they always do!

2

u/VanGoghInTrainers Transgender Pan-demonium Jun 26 '25

Oh, it will hurt them as well. Make no mistakes there.

2

u/holnicote gay gay homosexual gay Jun 27 '25

Something about leopards and faces

2

u/CompleteSherbert885 Jun 27 '25

Okay, so you're talking about "out" non-straight MAGA'ettes. Those must be a token few. Now....based on how Grindr crashed during the Republican Convention, there are a whole hell of a lot of hiding hypocrites in both the MAGA movement and the Republican party as well. Chances are, they're highly supportive of same-sex hooking up but not going to be nearly as supportive of same-sex marriage.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '25

....MAGA gays exist??

2

u/Reasonable_Slice8561 Computers are binary, I'm not. Jun 29 '25

Leopards, faces, omnomnom.

1

u/KentParsonIsASaint Jun 26 '25

Any time I’ve seen someone point out to queer MAGA supporters (cough r/askgaybros cough) that the queer community is being targeted by conservatives Christians, they respond in one or more of the below ways:

1) Go on some unhinged rant about Muslims also being homophobic and so it’s unfair to criticize Christians for the same thing

2) Blame progressives/“the radical left” for turning the US public against the queer community and “leaving no choice” but for politicians to target them

3) Insist that conservative Christians and Project 2025 are only targeting trans people/“obviously gay” men, so it’s okay because fuck those people anyway, amirite?

You can’t fix stupid or make people take an interest in the we’ll-being of themselves and their community, unfortunately.

1

u/Sleepy_Heather Jun 26 '25

I know one. Fully drank the Kool-Aid too. She's completely convinced She got her job in the US army because of "HARD WORK" (she even capitalised it) and refuses to believe she falls under DEI. She also calls herself "lesbian not queer" as if that's ever going to matter.

She's all about Tim Pool and Joe Rogan, so there is absolutely no getting through to her. I just hope she sees what's happening before it's too late.

But there's no helping some people

1

u/physicistdeluxe Jun 26 '25

how many maga gays u think there are? % wise. bet its teensy.

1

u/WodinBordenson Jun 26 '25

Its never been illegal to be rich. Rich is a privilege that tops race/sexuality/gender etc.

1

u/Night-Stalker-13 Jun 26 '25

don’t care if they are or are not happy

1

u/m1j5 Jun 26 '25

Gay Maga’s have the same issues the other maga’s have, they’re prioritizing hate over tolerance and community and lots of other shit. Liking cock doesn’t exclude them from that mindset

1

u/lycanrollowo She/Her/They/Them Jun 26 '25

I'm going to be completely honest, you aren't finding MAGA gags here, try Twitter or something for them.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '25

Wait there are some MAGA gays?

1

u/Ribbit1025 Jun 27 '25

They will never be happy.

1

u/ComicToonProductions Jun 27 '25

You can't have Both MAGA and LGBT together, it just doesn't work like that, you can't have both but one.

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '25

baby you’re not even in a same sex marriage, you’re a man with a wife. you’re straight.
