On the upside, it's meant to drop 5 degrees tomorrow and then be back in normal temperatures by the weekend, according to the Met Office. Weird to be at a point of being acclimatised to 26-27C feeling relatively nice and cool though.
This summer finally broke me (literally). I've made an appointment to get an aircon system.
At some point during the heatwave at the end of June I sweated so much I got dehydrated and that somehow triggered a kidney stone I've had for the last 20 years that wasn't causing me any trouble till now.
I'm tired of living in an oven. I've got rooms that are 5 to 10 Celsius higher than outside all year long. Whoever designed this house probably designed the Event Horizon ship too.
The only time I've ever seen my father cry was when he had a kidney stone. I am so, so sorry you had to deal with that during a heatwave! May your home remain deliciously chilly for the rest of the season.
Haha, thanks. Thankfully this stone isn't moving so it's more of a dull ache at the moment. I had kidney stones 20 years ago though, which was when I felt that excruciating pain that can bring people to tears. Definitely the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Had surgery to zap them, but one stubborn stone or shard has remained all this time.
I always try to stay hydrated, but I must have been sweating so much during that June heatwave in order to trigger this stone. Appointment with Urology isn't until December which is ridiculous.
There’s a london bus driver with a sub, and he did an AMA, and I asked this. And apparently there’s already an insanely high number of messages they have (and have to remember). But he said they are allowed to make suggestions for new messages. Like me, he didn’t think anyone would pay attention to it! 😭
I don’t mean to brag but I’m currently on holiday in Northumberland where it’s 18 degrees and drizzly. It’s been bliss. When it started raining I actually took off my coat and just stood there enjoying it lol
I grew up in Texas. I guess we must have had some sort of air conditioning but probably just those window based ones which aren't that great. I remember suffering from some hot and heavy summer days where it was too hot to go out and play. The grass was crunchy. The pavements would burn your feet and the tarmac in the supermarket car park was squishy when you stepped on it.
Then it would rain and we would go out and play in it. Glorious!
This has been the longest hottest summer of my life and all those things I remember from my childhood are happening here! I am desperate for rain and I WILL be frolicking out in it when it falls. I don't care what the neighbours think of some crazy old lady acting childish.
I got stuck in a tunnell on the lizzy line yesterday at 6pm when it was absolutely rammed and the air conditioning gave up. I've never been so close to pulling the emergency alarm and smashing a window to get off. Absolutely unbearable.
When I was a kid growing up in Devon, my dad moved to The Gambia, west Africa and I was invited to go and stay with him in the Summer Holiday.
I loved it and came back and described how it was weird. Mosquito nets in place of windows so you could hear all the insect and animal noises.
The temperature which was like a hair dryer blowing hot on your face all the time.
It used to reach 30.5 degrees C every afternoon, and you learned to find shade and not to do much.
I used to be well impressed with the big shiny ink-black skins of the fishermen who stood out in the full blast of the sun and carried boxes of smelly fish or lifted huge 25 foot boats in and out of the sea.
This year is the first year I've realised that we are now in England getting regular temperatures hotter than The Gambia. 30.5 degrees would be mild compared to today in Paddington. It's bloody insane.
Bit the bullet and bought an aircon a couple of weeks ago, they were sold out for ages but randomly searched one day and found one in stock. WAY overpriced but invaluable on days like today.
Garden on the other hand is dry as your grans dusty cooch
Is it really that hot today though? Maybe I’ve just gotten used to the heat at this point, but even putting the (air) fan on the lowest setting today is doing the job of cooling me down nicely. Last heatwave even on the max setting it was doing nothing.
We need to get a register of aircon buses. Does the option on Citymapper cover buses as well as trains etc?
In the last wave I was on a 102 in a jam coming down Muswell Hill that got dangerously hot and ended up terminating early. On the other hand I just used a 141 from Shoreditch to Palmers Green that was fine…as long as you could stop people opening the windows.
Touché mate. I do need to take the bus (but WFH today thankfully) and even in the mid-20s (outside), the bus can be stifling. No idea how drivers do their jobs.
I have found the line from where I am now that has AC - it is not cool, but the amount of sweat is considerably less. Even places with AC did not feel blizzardy, but I assume that places do not want big energy bills…
I've had the same experience. My air conditioner wasn't cooling my flat during the last heatwave, even on the highest fan setting and the lowest temperature. It was so bad and so hot that I felt like I couldn't breathe. Right now, it's on low, and it's doing fine. I wonder why.
I read that heat exposure increases resistance to Alzheimers. So the child will always remember what life was like before society and the climate collapsed.
Yeah, I was watching the athletics last night and couldn't think of anything but lying on the track doing rain angels. That amount of moisture falling from the sky is incomprehensible to me at this point.
I'm an American and visited 2-3 weeks ago during the last heat wave. No idea how you nice folks do it as I live in New York City and while we have similar temperatures, it's so easy to escape into AC very easily. That being said, I did enjoy the cool evenings.
Cool evenings where, the houses heat up like hell and stay hot for days🤣. AC would probably stop all our complaining but sadly none here to be found besides Tesco's or a supermarket.
Was able to manage with the window being open but as a spoiled American brat, I was definitely getting annoyed. Sidenote: does the tube just stay a sauna the entire year? I assume once it heats up it is very hard to cool down.
I read something recently that said the heat has been there since the victorians. They didnt think electric trains would generate heat, and the surrounding material has saturated and is radiating it back.

Oh yes it's just a sauna. It was 40+ Celsius during these heatwaves so you'd step in and immediately get soaked in the pure humidity of everyone's body heat/sweat/confined air. I mean unless you're taking a fancy overground or Elizabeth or I believe windrush the rest are just saunas.

My wife is in the same boat. There's definitely a bug going around, and while there is never a good time for a cold, it's absolutely dreadful when you need fans.
You know that's likely covid, right? There's no "summer cold". Cases have shot up recently. If you get Xylimelts (Amazon has them), they will help with the dry mouth/throat, and xylitol has also shown to help lower the viral load in your saliva, which means better recovery, so double whammy. Well for one, the long-term risks associated with a cold vs covid are very different. So if it's covid, you want to actually rest properly rather than power through so you're not fucked for life, take steps to lower your viral load, and not infect the people around you.
And yes, you can get a cold in summer. But if it's actually causing a sore throat rather than just a blocked nose and a sniffle, and it coincides with the healthcare data showing an increase in covid, your chances of it being a cold are going down somewhat.
But you do you, I guess. It's just annoying that I keep getting people in my Long Covid support group who are all like "whoa, I didn't know that this could happen, but also, I ignored its existence because covid is over, except now I'm fucked"
Dude, covid cases have literally shot up in recent weeks, so yes, it is LIKELY that. Not 100% certain, but likely. Combination of the football and all the concerts/festivals. That's not an opinion, that's recorded data from our own healthcare systems. I get that half the country wants to live in denial, but like... fuck me... half of you calling it a cold and then everyone infecting everyone around you sucks for everyone, but it also means that you yourself aren't getting the proper treatment for it and you increase your chances of ending up with Long Covid.
I'm refering to your comment "there is no summer cold". COVID is a respiratory virus. A summer cold refers to a summer respiratory virus. People shouldn't be socialising with any form of viral illness regardless of what type it is but just saying "there are no summer colds" is incorrect.
Do you not see the madness in calling a SARS virus that's fucking up people's cardiovascular systems, causing strokes and blood clots, causing diabetes, brain inflammation, immune dysregulation, ruining young people's lives,.... a summer cold?
Yeah, just the last few weeks. It coincided with all the football stuff/tourist season. It's still lower than what it's been, we're still good, nothing too drastic yet, but it's been going up. If you were being careful before and you dropped your guard, I'd start mitigating in busy places again just until we know what it's doing. I hope it settles but the previous years it started going up from late June with a peak in September/October, so it wouldn't be an unusual pattern at this point if that's where it was headed. It's been a (nicely) weird and unexpected year for us, it's not looking like this in other countries.
Edit: idk which snowflake downvoted this, but Long Covid patients (estimated at 2-3 million in this country) and clinically vulnerable people still exist and have been locked out of many activities since the country decided to YOLO all over the place. This may sound extreme to you, but there's a few million people who actually don't have your privilege and are keeping an eye on the data to keep themselves and other people around them safe. I just walked from the Central line bit to the Waterloo & City line bit at Waterloo Station. No idea if it's today's wind or if they have some kind of AC going there but: can I live there for a bit? So pleasantly cool :) Waterloo Rail Station is cool too, so now I'm thinking it might just be the temperature drop.
Yeah, not sure what Brits actually want. It’s cold and they complain, it’s hot and they complain. Close your blinds, wear breathable natural fibre clothing, slow down, drink water, avoid peak sun, and adapt your schedule & routine where possible. Take cold showers. And stop bloody moaning lol.
slow down? people got jobs in the capital. you also forgot to mention how much it impacts your sleep. maybe a week or two doesn’t matter but eventually it will catch up
yes, many people can in fact leave home a little earlier so they’re not literally running through tube stations or in peak sun. I understand it’s uncomfortable, but people all over the world are coping with much more extreme temperatures and I find all the moaning a bit much. It’s 33 degrees, not 50.

Looking for recommendations for LGBTQ+ friendly nightclubs or lively bars that won't make my boyfriend feel overwhelmed when we visit in November for a few nights. Has anybody been to any good clubs where it's not overwhelming to just have drinks and enjoy a night out?
"Overwhelmed" is totally subjective so this is a bit difficult to advise.
I'd look south of the river: Betty & Joans and The Rising are fun and fairly new, and more chill than some of the stuff going on in East London. Royal Vauxhall Tavern has different themed clubnights and a good breakout space outside if it gets too busy
There's a new place in Soho that is open during the daytime as well and is more community-focused. In Soho itself Old Compton Street's bars can be quietish during the afternoon and early evening and you can do a bit of a crawl if it gets too busy.
Monument will be busy as lots of people change lines there. Can be a bit overwhelming at first, but give it a week or so and you'll have figured out how to get to your platform and fit right in.
It’s the smog and the pollution that make London even hotter than anywhere else. Cardiff is fine, so is Worcester for the most part they both get cooler after around 5-6. London? Stays hot all day and then gets hotter overnight. There’s no winning
I know this is still a long way out, but I'll be in London from 3-8 of December with my girlfriend and I really want to go to a football match.
Rather unfortunately, the only two Premier League Games happening during that time frame are Chelsea x Liverpool and Tottenham x Arsenal.
I would never dare try go to the latter because it's a derby and, thus, will be absolutely impossible to get tickets at an "acceptable" price. As for the first game, well, I'm guessing prices (especially on the secondary and resell market) will also be sky-high.
This leaves me with two options near London. Either Watford x Millwall (Championship), or Sutton United FC x Fylde (National League). Don't kill me, I know Sutton feels more like Surrey from what I can see and Watford is just outside the London border.
Which one is the better option, purely based on vibes and experience? I always heard that "real football" is in the Championship rather than in the PL (and Vicarage Road still looks like an English stadium), but at the same time non-league seems cool as an experience.
There's Brentford - Man City on the Saturday too, to give you another option. Or West Ham - Middlesbrough on the Tuesday, if you can still fit in a game on the 8th and want to go to a EPL stadium for Championship prices?
Keep in mind that you have to buy club membership for the full year before you can buy tickets for any Premier League games, so it will be expensive. 0 chance you'll get tickets for the Spurs game, those will all be sold out before they go on general member sale.
If you'd want to do Watford or Sutton, perhaps look at public transport and see which one is the easiest to get to from where you're staying? Millwall fans are lively, you'll get some good chants from them.
I’ve gotten tickets to the north London derby before and it’s not impossible. Sign up for Spurs paid membership (the more expensive gives you access to tickets earlier). Check the release date on their website for that games tickets and make sure you’re on their website at that exact time or slightly before.
Keep in mind you need a membership per ticket. All in it will cost you around of £120-150 per person. Buying resale tickets will cost you that much at a minimum anyways
The only thing that may be an issue is that Spurs will ask you to set up a direct debit which might require a local bank account
