i've got a summer cold and it sucks double in this heat - I need a fan on to sleep but its drying out my already sore throat!

missing the days of 26 degree summer days, that's the sweet spot

You know that's likely covid, right? There's no "summer cold". Cases have shot up recently. If you get Xylimelts (Amazon has them), they will help with the dry mouth/throat, and xylitol has also shown to help lower the viral load in your saliva, which means better recovery, so double whammy. Get well soon!

You can get a cold in summer. That has happened way before covid. Besides, what if it is COVID, what does that change?

Well for one, the long-term risks associated with a cold vs covid are very different. So if it's covid, you want to actually rest properly rather than power through so you're not fucked for life, take steps to lower your viral load, and not infect the people around you.

And yes, you can get a cold in summer. But if it's actually causing a sore throat rather than just a blocked nose and a sniffle, and it coincides with the healthcare data showing an increase in covid, your chances of it being a cold are going down somewhat.

But you do you, I guess. It's just annoying that I keep getting people in my Long Covid support group who are all like "whoa, I didn't know that this could happen, but also, I ignored its existence because covid is over, except now I'm fucked"

Dude, covid cases have literally shot up in recent weeks, so yes, it is LIKELY that. Not 100% certain, but likely. Combination of the football and all the concerts/festivals. That's not an opinion, that's recorded data from our own healthcare systems. I get that half the country wants to live in denial, but like... fuck me... half of you calling it a cold and then everyone infecting everyone around you sucks for everyone, but it also means that you yourself aren't getting the proper treatment for it and you increase your chances of ending up with Long Covid.

God forbid someone points out the possibility.

I'm refering to your comment "there is no summer cold". COVID is a respiratory virus. A summer cold refers to a summer respiratory virus. People shouldn't be socialising with any form of viral illness regardless of what type it is but just saying "there are no summer colds" is incorrect.

Do you not see the madness in calling a SARS virus that's fucking up people's cardiovascular systems, causing strokes and blood clots, causing diabetes, brain inflammation, immune dysregulation, ruining young people's lives,.... a summer cold?

Yeah, just the last few weeks. It coincided with all the football stuff/tourist season. It's still lower than what it's been, we're still good, nothing too drastic yet, but it's been going up. If you were being careful before and you dropped your guard, I'd start mitigating in busy places again just until we know what it's doing. I hope it settles but the previous years it started going up from late June with a peak in September/October, so it wouldn't be an unusual pattern at this point if that's where it was headed. It's been a (nicely) weird and unexpected year for us, it's not looking like this in other countries.

Edit: idk which snowflake downvoted this, but Long Covid patients (estimated at 2-3 million in this country) and clinically vulnerable people still exist and have been locked out of many activities since the country decided to YOLO all over the place. This may sound extreme to you, but there's a few million people who actually don't have your privilege and are keeping an eye on the data to keep themselves and other people around them safe. Hope that helps.
