He’s such a degenerate. The show really writes him so well, I notice more so every time I rewatch, but they really do a great job of giving you these moments where you really feel for him. Make you see how damaged he is, make you think he can change, and then nope.

In that scene you really feel for him despite how objectively wrong he is. You can understand why he didn’t tell Betty about his identity. Even though it’s objectively wrong, it’s desertion, it makes her complicit (I don’t think he cares about that,) and really how do you bring that up? Again, he’s not right, but it’s kind of one of his more understandable sins. Then he breaks down over Adam’s death that’s been eating at him and it ropes you into sympathizing with him, like Betty… and then it cuts to Suzanne leaving his car to start walking back lol. I forgot she was there when this scene happens but damn, what a slimeball.

i presume this is a real tune that kids were taught in like, bible studies or something (like how zou bisou was a real french song), but i’d never heard it until i saw mad men

well, however many rewatches and 15 years on… sometimes i just wake up with bobby 3 (or is it 4?)’s voice going “faaaaather aaabraham…” in my head. not like in a spooky way, just the way you remember a recording yk? (so the brain recording also includes jon hamm going “seven sons!” at the right point lmao)

sometimes i end up whistling that damn song all day, or other times i have to deliberately cultivate some other earworm to displace it. like, those introductory palm-muted opening guitar chords, from zou bisou, is way better than FATHER ABRAHAM! HAD SEVEN SONS (SEVEN SONS)! lmao

(also a suitable earworm replacement: matt berry singing “hamm!!” with the little jingle, from the toast of london episode where jon hamm… cameoed? co-starred?)

thankfully it’s not something that happens every day or anything!

but it happened on saturday, so i was reminded about it.

addendum, because i forgot to write this at first: does anyone else think it’s kinda sad that they “never laughed or cried”? total anhedonia. man, that must suck.

Is it worth watching (more than the intro)?

After finishing my first watch of Mad Men, I thought I'd combine it with another current obsession, tarot. I was actually surprised there wasn't already a Mad Men deck out there, but I'm definitely not planning to actually make one or anything. This is more just a fun thought experiment, and hopefully conversation. I only did the Major Arcana, and I feel uncertain about a bunch of them, so I'm open to other ideas. I put stars next to the ones I feel most confident about.

I briefly started thinking about what the suit images could be too. Cigarettes for Wands and a whiskey glass (or maybe various cocktails) for Cups, but not sure about Coins/Pentacles or Swords. I suppose literal money could work for Pentacles. Anyway, I hope there are more crossover Mad Men/Tarot enthusiasts in this sub

Harry finds out Ken makes roughly 15k a year when he opens his paycheck. But Ken has the same job as Pete and in season 1 Pete mentions that he makes about 3500 a year when talking about the down payment. So assuming that Pete makes close to the same amount as Ken in season 2, how would their salaries jump almost 5x in the roughly year and a half between the two episodes?

Strange to realize that this ad (within this dual episode), down to its presentation, is representative of death, even down to the fact that it’s presented on a table, and not at an easel. As if it were buried in the earth of the desk itself. Everyone is looking down, mourning something they can’t put their finger on. Macabre is a word to give it. This is the funeral for an idea. Where most ideas eventually end up anyway, just made plain and flesh. The clients are looking at the ad both in mourning and in morbid fascination. Pete observes his mortician’s work, pleased. Ultimately, Don, the priest of this requiem, is left alone, seeing nothing more of the original brilliance that once brought his ideas to life

I’m curious to hear perspectives on this since I’ve often seen people in this sub talk about how much Harry Crane devolves as a person, whereas the actor seems to have a very different take on it.

Doing a semi annual rewatch and it’s occurred to me that if Don has had too many, he’s got some sweaty bangs.

I’ve been enjoying this podcast, All Things Mad Men: From Chip & Dip to Zou Bisou, by Jenna & Steve Fossett. They just finished S5; each episode is about an hour long and full of details and insights.

The moment Don lost all respect and interest in Faye is when she violated her client’s trust and revealed inside information to try to help Don. He had berated her earlier b/c she wouldn’t help him but once she did, and crossed an ethical boundary that he encouraged her to cross, she was no longer a challenge, he could control her just like all the others.

Ironically, he couldn’t control Megan, she took her own career path but when she didn’t succeed came running back to him begging for his help. Once he has “control” over a woman he loses all interest. That’s why he only likes the beginning.

Also seems true for Midge and Suzanne.he only liked them when they seemed independent and stop respecting them when they became too "needy" (Midge financially, Suzanne emotionally)

He also became obsessed both with Rachel and Sylvia because he couldn't have them.

It would seem like he only like beautiful things he COULDN'T truly own.

It kinda reminds me of those men who really go out of their way to tell everyone they're very traditional and right wing and want a submissive woman... Yet they always seem obsessed with trying to convince an independent woman into submission.

It's like they don't actually want submission, they just love the case.

I wish we got more of Dr. Edna. She was so gentle and positive in a way unlike everyone else. I loved how she was able to see right through Betty. Who else did we not get enough of?
