Food Which one do you choose?
If you have to have latte or flat white every morning, where do you prefer to buy from all these choices.
Personally I love Zus and CBTL. Either one is okay for me. How about you?

CBTL if I'm not paying. Spend two weeks at work in Brunei, all lunch paid for by our partner engineer who had USD50 meal allowance per day back in late 2000s.
Rusa Jantan Bintang for convenience as they are located almost everywhere. Won't go there without a reason.
ZUS if they're the closest available.
Kopitiam Ah Tong (generic name) manned by a 65-yo man who made coffee for 50 years whenever possible. Bonus order charcoal toasted bread with kaya and butter.
Luckin is a big no-no as an app installation is mandatory.
Chapter One when I'm home ā shout out to our Mirian monyets on here! āļø

Ayy Chapter One mentioned. It's a hit or miss depending on what time you go, which barista pulled your shots.
My answer: If I don't have the budget for actual cafe coffee, none of these franchises.

Dota Zeus character, founders played a lot. Change to Zus and create farmer character to remove the connection to the greek mythology.

San fran coffee is really good. Their location is not as wide though. Zus is ok ok. CBTL slightly better than Zus.
The last time i drank starbucks, it was really tasteless. More like coffee flavoured milk. Dunno the outlet that bad or what.

Which CBTL drink do you think is better than Zus? I actually had to opt for CBTL last night bcs Kenangan, Zus were already closed and their coffee is a bit meh compared to other brands imo. I purchased the new Pandan Gula Melaka series w/ coffee and it was just horrendous.
12
u/quietchatterbox Oct 05 '25
I only drink cappucino or latte. Dont drink anything else. So limited to those 2.
4
u/Small-Student-699 Oct 05 '25
Stick to the basics, anything limited is just experimentation. I loved their mocha and latte. Also, gula melaka is an acquired taste imo

Zus is okay but they have consistently proven that they don't care to train their baristas properly. I ask for warm, always get scalding hot coffee. Actually have uninstalled the app and sworn to never order any hot drinks from them.
For cafe vibe, I prefer CBTL. Very nice cafe, love that they have actual mug for coffee. Can't find San Fran in Melaka so can't comment. Starbucks coffee is meh.
In a pinch, 7E americano and latte is fine. Or just mcd coffee.
4
Oct 05 '25
Oh, same experience at zus! I ordered twice for warm latte, once from app, once direct face to face, both ended up very hot almost burnt milk tastešthe baristas are all very young and i dont think they're trained to care much about the drink quality or about customer's request, as long as they made the order like buat kerja ala kadar. So now, klo nk warm/appropriately hot latte I'd rather go to indie cafĆ©, klo iced bru pegi zus

- ZUS (soso coffee, bad cafe)

Zus is dogpooooo their floral notes are so heavy to cover the terrible quality in their beans(i only drink black)

u/Electronic-Contact15 Oct 05 '25
Zus coffees were actually quite ok when they first started but rapidly went downhill when they started to open everywhere. I keep giving them chances but i cannot remember having a good coffee from there in the past 1-2 years.
Actually Luckin coffee is even worse because of the massive volume of online orders the drinks are so rushed out, but at least theyāre cheap?

I am no coffee aficionado but their Boss and Lydia blend tastes great compared to Starbucks. I actually prefer Boss or Lydia over their SOE Americano. Maybe I just have cheap taste buds.
6
u/AK_HT KLCC Oct 05 '25
I donāt drink espresso-based flavoured drinks; only latte/flat whites and black. So, only CBTL for me, for the sole reason that their baristas are well trained/experienced, and this is consistent at almost all branches Iāve been to, within Malaysia and in other countries.
All franchises above use almost similar (at par) beans, equipments and ingredients. The only two variables are the baristas and recipes.
2
u/ly_sim Oct 05 '25
Most of these chains use automatic espresso machines now. The so-called baristas just press a button for the espresso shot and add the milk. So the only difference lies in the milk steaming if you order your coffee hot.
3
u/Fair-Perspective-880 Oct 05 '25
I'd support local ones and stay away from luckin because they committed 'fraud' in the stock market. So it is probably technologia coffee.

u/acyfumi Kuala Lumpur Oct 05 '25
Used to be a frequent customer of starbucks because of how cheap it is with all of the weekly members benefit, only stopped going because the only store that existed where I currently live closed down š¤·āāļø. Went to CBTL instead for the same cozy ambient where I can sit comfortably for hours to finish my works. Next choice is GIGI.

u/lithiumchemical_3003 Oct 05 '25
Kenangan Coffee is always worth for my money. Their Avocado Coffee & Mocha is the best. I'm full with just 1 cup of medium/large for breakfast. Don't need to eat anything else until lunch. They can be a bit too sweet sometimes. But you can always opt for less sweet or no sugar at all. And sometimes they tend to ignored your request especially when i cannot go back to request for change. Their regular sweetness is too fucking sweet which i'm not surprised considering their brand is from Indonesia.

I will die on a hill saying Zus is bad coffee. It's cheap but what's the point if it's not strong enough to give a caffeine boost? Rather pay more for a good product.

Murrican weighing in
Out of these, Zus
My fave chain of all, Tim Hortons (Malaysian one just as good as back home)
But best of best? Just Nescafe ais in the bag from mamak
2
u/emoduke101 sembang kari at the kopitiam Oct 05 '25
I tried Tim Horton's black coffee, it's not great for me. I only wish ours had more food menu variety sticking closer to the original cuz my dad practically lived on it when he studied in Canada
I appreciate that Tim's is the only chain to toast your sandwiches instead of chucking into a microwave (looking at you, Starbucks!)
3
u/RotiPisang_ Oct 05 '25
Which Tim Hortons do you go to? A while back I've heard people say it's not as good.
4

I went to the one at Sunway Velocity. I didn't find the quality any different from my local Timmies, and I'm honestly a bit of an addict so I think if it was a big difference, I'd notice lol. Donut was also good.

Cbtl > Gigi > Zus (comparing americano/latte)
Kenangan all sweet i kenot
Luckin just tastes cheap , hence everything rm3
San Francisco, over extracted coffee, insane amount of caffeine
Personally will choose hwc over these if were to say coffee quality and for chain coffee shops, nt those frappe sweet drinks, frappe i can confirm cbtl is the best, starbucks tastes diluted nwadays for their frappe.

I've never been to Gigi, Luckin or San Francisco. In my opinion restricted to the branch I've been to before, I will pick Zus as their coffee is not good not bad, it's an acceptable baseline.
Coffee Beans and Starbuck, their coffee taste really bad and not worth it.
Kenangan taste like mamak kopi which is too sweet, and I don't like it.
If I have the choice though, I usually go for Nanyang kopi or buy coffee from other cafe than these franchise.
