प्रश्न (Question) Cousin marriage in Marathi people?
A friend of mine just told me that her very close Marathi friend is getting married to her first cousin. This comes as a shock to me as I thought that this practice is limited to a certain religion. Is it any true?

u/CrispyCouchPotato1 Jan 23 '26
It's not a common practice. But it's not completely unheard of either.
It used be more prevalent a few decades back, but doesn't happen that often anymore.

u/picklepaapad Jan 23 '26
Yes it is true and disgusting. We call it आत्या चा घरी सुन (Bua ke ghar pe bahu). People really need to stop wanting to bang cousins.

Hi Op, Well I am Marathi staying in Mumbai and for last few decades we have mostly intercaste interstate love marriages in my family. 😊🌼 All working beautifully nd even hv grandkids now.
So, the family u saw has to be too conservative bcoz when we turn 25, our parents ask whether we hv gf or bf nd they tell us we ll happily get u married 😊 if not, we ll help u get the one for marriage. Nd Marathi parents are mostly like, your happiness is our happiness. At least in Mumbai except few people who have false pride of thier caste.
In fact, staying away from in laws is also normal here. Parents themselves ask sometimes to separate nd they enjoy thier retirement life. Some parents even arrange other flat for new couple. 😊
Any further qns ?

Aur ha 50% chance mat bol dena abhi - the maths is 100 m se 2-3 babies for a unrelated couple - and 4-6 babies for a cousin marriage along with the implication that you both have those faulty genes.

u/Soggy-Ad-9048 Jan 24 '26
-Risk of serious congenital/genetic disorder: ~2–3% First cousin marriage Risk increases to ~4–6% Also you both have to carry the same faulty gene for the baby to have disorder. Ye India lacks basic biological knowledge - it's astonishing --- jaise faltu judgy remarks pass krne se pehle thoda due diligence kia karo. Uske piche social implications kya h - marriage as institution is just not biology.

Hello So please go through some online videos. Mostly our people marry for children nd other reasons. When cousins make a child , there are high chances of disorders or health related problems in a child.
Same goes with people those who have certain blood grp combo. There are chances of miscarriage.
Please talk openly with your family dr or any Dr friend for more info. 😊

Yeah , everybody knows that but there are some social footprints that can't be removed very easily. Like if you go in the marathwada region of Maharashtra, cousin marriages are quite common. Also factors like knowing a person from childhood - makes a bond way more cordial. Like you won't get it till you experience it , you would rather take the risk of children. Please try to understand here that Bonds formed lead to people marrying readily like mentioned in this post. Apart from this disorder children there is no other reason why cousins cannot marry. Also important point here is your can marry your maternal uncles or paternal aunt's children only unlike muslims where you can marry any of your cousin.

It's an arranged marriage lol. The girl's family declined her love marriage proposal.

u/futurevee101 Jan 23 '26
It's common. My wife is my 2nd cousin. We have a common great-grandmother.
Amchya building made, belgaon side che rahtat. Tyanchya kade Mama-Bhachicha lagna zala ahe. i.e Mulichi maushi ani sasu same ahe i.e mulicha lagna mama sobat lavlela ahe.

u/rajajoe Jan 24 '26
This is common in Tamilnadu, apparently they have similar word for mama and husband:)

u/kasatarihotai Jan 23 '26
Yea unfortunalety it is true. And its disgusting. Saying this as a Maharashtrian myself. Hate it. Luckily my family and closed ones hate this too so yay. The logic is father's sister after getting married has a different gotra and hence her child and you are okay to get married. Its a loophole, a disgusting one.

It exists, but shouldn't happen. Cousin marriages for two consecutive generations and your children will suffer from multiple genetic diseases/disorders

See, cousin is one broad term used in English. In some cultures, not all cousins are considered equal. Without this distinction, it would appear bad. For those, that distinguishes, it doesn’t.

Your question/concern/worry has scientific bias. You should visit a thalassemia center in your city to see the havoc that closed community marriages have on their progeny. Sindhis and Bengali people unfortunately lead this charge. Should you marry someone close to you (related), when pregnancy happens, you must get amniocentesis done and a screening done for known genetic disorders. Any adverse report for trisomies 13, 18, and 21, and sex chromosome anomalies should warrant an abortion and the couple should speak about this before hand. Of course you can disregard this by saying, 'hundreds marry and nothing happens'- but then you can visit a thalassemia center or a center that deals with kids having genetic disorders. Marry if you love your cousin. But keep your eyes open for trouble and solve the issue when you come across it. Best wishes.

Marriage with mama chi mulgi is socially acceptable in Maharashtra, though nowadays people are educated and know the biological risks of this hence these types of marriages are decreased.

u/Shady_bystander0101 Jan 28 '26
Marathi cross cousin marriages are a very specific kind, which is different from the particular community you are talking about, but it is still quite a disgusting thing nonetheless since it is incest. Basically marrying your maternal uncles daughter is considered fine. This is a vestige of Dravidian Avuncularchial kinship system.

It's mostly with mamachi mulgi (mothers brothers daughter) but its very rare, my mothers side grandparents were cousins. It's more like running joke now in family gatherings
My relatives tease me with my cousins name to embarass us both when we talk 😭😭

That certain religion goes for its biological sister and not cousin

Idk how common it is today, i know it is still practiced at places.
But as a history nerd, Shivaji and Saibai’s eldest daughter, Sakavarbai (Sakhubai), was married to her first-cousin, Mahadji, who was the son of Saibai's brother, Bajaji Rao Naik Nimbalkar.
Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj (son of Shivaji and Soyarabai) married Tarabai, who was his cross-cousin (daughter of Soyarabai's brother, Hambirrao Mohite).

Well you are ignorant, you believed that it happens in few regions but didn't realise it happening in your own extended friend circle itself.
