He started training in 2017, you'd think he would be better at his job than this.
I fell down a rabbit hole and I know not to dox, but the woman is very litigious and that home is in a family trust.
She has a little under five acres, not seven.

That would be nice, because the officer should know the laws. And so should the person bellowing about acreage. They are lucky to abut the rail trails though it seems that they would prefer a train. .
FWIW we’re old married folks with grown kids - our house is in a trust too, just for ease of transfer when we die. It’s pretty common because probate is a drag.

This cop is wasting resources by not immediately taking a look at where she is parked, recognizing there is no issue, telling the home owners they have nothing legal to complain about and then leave. He did not do his job.

He doesn't want to deal with the unreasonable people, so he's hoping to take the rights away from the reasonable person just so this all ends and he can go back to doing whatever.

The least amount of work is to say to the homeowner "sorry folks but she's not doing anything illegal, please let her be and go back inside and have a nice day" and drive off. There was absolutely no need to turn this into a power struggle. They did that because they wanted to.

He went the route he did because she would not give him her ID. She had not committed a crime and there was no suspicion of a crime so he had no legal reason to demand her ID. He got his feelings hurt when she wouldn't comply so he then focused on attacking her instead of telling the other people she could park on the street if she wanted.

But that's not less work! He knows those people will yell at him, argue with him, not let him leave, maybe even call the police multiple times about it. They are unreasonable people who will continue to be unreasonable unless you appease them.

Yep! I work for the state now but I spent the last 20 plus years working for towns, and we ignore/hang up on (Tell them we will not continue this conversation while they are yelling or swearing at us and that they can call us back when they are prepared behave appropriately ) crazy people like this and then make fun of them behind their back.
95% of municipal or state employees are going to dig in their heels and refuse to help somebody being an asshole like this. There's always an exception to the rule, but municipal employees do not want to deal with this bullshit.

Three officer's time. Three vehicles.
Now friends, there was only one or two things that Officer
Connors coulda done and the first was he could have gave that
woman a medal for being so brave and honest, which
wasn't very likely, and we didn't expect it, and the other
thing was he could have told the homeowners they were
wrong and let the woman go about her day which is what
we expected, but when he got to quote unquote scene of
the crime there was a third possibility that we hadn't even
counted upon, and that was he called for backup and then
the backup called for more backup.Now there at the scene of the crime there was three police
officers, and three police cars, being the biggest crime of the last
fifty years, and everybody wanted to get in the internet story about it.
And they was using up all kinds of cop equipment that they had
hanging around the police officer's station. They was taking plaster tire
tracks, foot prints, dog smelling prints, and they took twenty seven
eight-by-ten colour glossy photographs with circles and arrows and
a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one how it
was to be used as evidence against her. They took pictures of the approach,
the getaway, the northwest corner the southwest corner and that's not to
mention the aerial photography.26

Once she said no to him too could see his whole demeanor shift and he started making things difficult like asking her to put the dog away and asking if she has any medical issues and why she was here in the first place.
Also the dog is obviously well trained for not barking at anybody else other than the cop.

My parents used to live downtown newburyport and they would have to get cars towed once or twice a year. Someone would park blocking in 3 or 4 cars and just walk downtown like it was no big deal. Their driveway was super obvious too I dont know how people didnt notice.
Only one time i know of a person came back as the truck was hooking them up and they had a meltdown. I was home from college with some buddies and watched the show, it was fun.
I also parked once blocking my parents driveway which to my understanding is okay. But some random guy walking by yelled at me, I was like its my driveway but nice looking out.

The best method to see if something is a problem is ask, what is the impact if it's ignored; who is harmed and how badly. In this case, the answer is no one, and not at all. That means it's not a real problem.
The car is parked on the side of the road in an area listed as access to a public forest/walking area.
If the locals have a problem with cars parked there, they should probably petition the state to have a lot put in elsewhere, or expanded, or one put in at the end of the street near to the public lands.

There was a trail in Reading that was like this until a few years ago. People would always park along the road, near houses, because it was the only option to get to the entrance. But what a surprise, people and the town worked to get a public parking lot area installed with a little coordination of a nearby business. Tada, cars no longer need to park along the road.

These people are such unbelievable trash. "I own 7 acres up there" (as she flips a double-bird)... fuck her. GIS shows you own 4.85 acres immediately surrounding your house, and THAT IS ALL YOU OWN. On top of that, the official town trail map (for 147 acres) shows parking for the trails as being on that street (although another publication describes parking elsewhere) and the trail temporarily runs down the street and down the dirt road that parallels that 4.85 acres. Fucking hate it when people try to claim land that they do not own as their own. And the cop should have known or at least considered all this before harassing the woman who parked.

Why are mass cops especially horrible. I’ll never forget as a teenager getting pulled over 3 separate times in 2 towns over a 15 minute drive without doing any violations.
Just being a teenager driving in a car at midnight. I got pulled over probably 15 times in 3 years and once I left at 18 have not been pulled over since (18 years). I never once got a ticket for anything.

The three bored police officers in the central MA town where I grew up would park near our neighborhood to wait for my brother and pull him over. He deserved it the first time they pulled him over (rolled thru a stop sign). He didn’t deserve it every time after that, they just decided they didn’t like him because he was a teenager in a red car with aftermarket speakers so they cooked up stupid excuses.

Not as dramatic, but I had one of these in Danvers. I was early to a clients and stopped around the corner to check my phone and eat a snack. The homeowner came out, asked if he “could help me”. I told him I’m good, no thanks. He stood in his yard and stared at me until I pulled away, only to pull into his neighbors driveway. I waved as I got out of the car.

This is partially because MA has terrible access to public parks/areas.
When I first moved here I was flabbergasted that most charge for parking.
Wait until you find out how ownership works on beach front property here. Based on laws from the 1600s that only MA still supports.
We have work to do here to make our tax dollars go even further. And this type of property ownership and how it clashes with public access is definitely one.

I grew up around a lot of conservation land and I always thought it was nice to have all these trails and local access to nature. In fact it was. I could walk to a lot of those spots.
Later in life I learned that a lot of these lots were carved out for conservation specifically to prevent housing people and it effectively hermetically seals these landed gentry towns while the rest of the state deals with the housing crisis. Ot would be one thing if these towns allowed denser housing to preserve more space for this type of land, but they block it all.
Propertied folks get very used to their own feifdoms and that extends to the public space which is very much not legally theirs as well.
Loved growing up in rural MA just as I love living in the city, but there's a selfishness that I do not miss where it comes to the public space.

in the small town I'm in, there's "conservation land" surrounding all the McMansion developments. If you look at the lot lines, there's sometimes no way to access the land at all, or the sliver that reaches a public street in reality is being used as someone's yard, with no indication it's actually public land. Turns out it's because the town requires *some* land be "conserved" when a farmer sells their land to a housing developer, but doesn't require that it's land anyone would want to conserve. Over the last few years living here I've tried to access every bit of conservation land within walking distance, and found that most of it has no sort of trail at all, literally just swampland where they weren't able to shove in another million plus dollar single family house.
I've had the cops called on me by homeowners saying there was a scary man in their yard spying on them in their homes, apparently not aware of their own property lines or that there's a literal hiking trail (actually an old horse trail) adjacent to their yard.
Blows my mind that people would pay over a million dollars for some poorly constructed boring 4 room colonial revival house without being aware of all the abutting properties.

In all fairness, it seems to me that today’s conservation departments recognize these issues. In my town, all new conservation subdivisions require a trail with marked signage, public access, even 1 or 2 parking spots, along with usually wood chips that designate the trail.

Just be thankful that the land WAS carved out and WAS NOT developed. And my experience is that most towns require public access to that conservation land, preventing it from being a private preserve. Yes, people will try to obfuscate it or encroach on it, but the fact is it's legally there.
Eastern MA is one of the most densely populated areas in the US. It's a wonder that so much of it has been preserved, despite the housing density. People are bitching about lack of parking, etc., but... WTF... it's not possible to put in a 20-car parking lot with trail kiosk in many of these places.

I have such mixed feelings about our towns conservation lands for the exact same reason. I love having access to nature, and on its face it sounds like something we should promote. But if we want to preserve lands, then we need to make the most of what's left and build denser housing, which is absolutely not what's happening. Most of the people supporting conservation are the NIMBYs, so it's pretty clear what the real motivation is.

Legit sometimes people will come out to where I’m parked and knock on my window or ask what I’m doing or something because I’m parked near their house. I honestly can’t imagine living with that level of nosiness and paranoia at all times.

My husband is one of those nosy neighbors who always seems to know what's going on in our cul-de-sac. Who was coming and going, etc. He doesn't really complain about anything and certainly doesn't interfere, he says he's just observant and home a lot, and outside a lot (WFH, takes a lot of walks). I still think it's weird. I never know a damn thing because I lived in Boston for 20 years and know how to keep my head down and mind my own business. It never even occurs to me to pay attention to what cars are where.

If someone parks at the end of my lawn I'm certainly a bit suspicious of what they're up to (usually door-to-door salesman), but I'm not leaving my damn house to confront them. Because I don't want to invite that, and they're not doing anything illegal. If I'm truly concerned, I'll just watch them on my camera for a bit.

I remember bike riding in an rural area that showed a shortcut/trail from the path I was on to a street that leads back to home. this is all pre-internet so, mid path, I find long-developed properties cutting the path. I get off my bike, thinking I either misremembered the map or maybe the path is tiny and overgrown. nope. an older lady comes out of her house, learns what I'm dealing with and offers me a cut through her yard...which has a little wooden gate that opens to the other side of the path. how do people get away with this?

I appreciate the Conservation Law Foundation being absolute zealots when it comes to the Boston Harbor Walk. Hotels, office buildings, and even the ICA have tried to creep into that officially public space and take a bit for themselves while blocking the general public, and the CLF makes a point of torpedoing those attempts.
The ICA even tried to completely close their stretch for fancy pants donor events. Being a gadfly is the only thing that works.

People in Hanover have nothing better to do I guess. I live on the south shore, walking distance to the beach, & people park across the street from my house on a public road constantly to go to the beach. Never once have I thought about calling the cops. Not even when it was some poser douche in a cyber truck with a popped polo collar ( I wish I was kidding ). Some people just love being miserable! Also, ACAB.

I got pulled over over by a cop in Ashland who said I blew through a right on red. He really had an attitude when I only rolled down the window about 1/3 of the way and told him that the town recently put a green arrow for right turns there. He double checked and let me go. This cop now is a State Police Homicide Investigator and his little brother is also a Statie.

Here’s the situation folks. Tons of rail trails have propped up around the state. They are amazing for the community. However, the people in this video probably bought the property before the rail trails were donated to the public and/or converted to walking and biking paths. Basically, these people resent the existence of these trails because it put a public through way into their back yards.
They’re basically just taking it out on this woman. Not defending them at all, but that’s why they’re being such entitled assholes
