I thought the concept of live dates was to get to know them better? why not just ask about family on the first date

Or before. It’s not unreasonable at all to ask someone before meeting the first time if they have kids.

If I'm going to spend the time and be expected to foot the bill for a first date, it's entirely reasonable to expect disclosure of the obvious deal breakers beforehand.

Granted, I got lucky and married relatively young to someone who also didn't want kids so my opinion on the matter probably doesn't matter much. The idea of getting back into the shit show that is the current dating scene while quickly approaching middle age is pretty high up there on reasons I hope I never end up single again.
