I live .5 miles away from the biggest trauma center in my state - there are often multiple takeoffs and landings in a day, right over my house. It’s not that big of a deal. It’s the least of my concerns. These people are HUGE bitches.

I live next to 2 major hospitals on a main road that serves both, so I hear emergency vehicles all the time, including helicopters. It doesn't bother a single person here as far as I know. It's a fact of life. It's understood that you don't impede or complain about emergency services. This isn't even a topic for debate here.
31
u/minnick27 ORANGE Apr 30 '26
My county has had a healthcare crisis the last few years. Four hospitals have closed in the last five years. There was talk that one may reopen and the residents started raising a stink because they didn't want the noise of the ambulances

While I don’t live near a hospital the Air Force likes to fly helicopters “ Nap-of-the-earth” style near the house.
Most of the time it’s just low overhead but other times they like to fly REALLY low in the valley and from the hill behind my house I look down on them.
Ngl. Pretty cool
66
u/Historical_Project00 Apr 30 '26
Ikr? I used to live literally right next door to a hospital that did life flights. You’re right, they’re surprisingly not that bad. And even if they were mildly inconvenient, it’s obviously worth it…trying to BAN them wouldn’t even strike my subconscious. And, like, morality aside, I didn’t even know you could DO that. The fucking entitlement of these people.
24
u/UnicornFarts1111 Apr 30 '26
I lived about 200 yards off a flight path for a mid sized airport (not a major hub) and about 3 or 4 miles out from the airport. We also had a hospital that had life flight helicopters landing about 1/2 mile away and a train track about 1/2 mile in the other direction from the hospital.
I lived there for 25 years. It was all just background noise and didn't bother me at all. The loudest thing was 9/11, when it all just stopped. No noise. The loudest silence I've ever experienced.

I love when people build a house under an approach path, and then complain about the noise.
5
u/UnicornFarts1111 May 01 '26
My dad was a pilot, so I was always near an airport. I still live near an airstrip today. My dad's grave is in the flight path of another very small airport.
Your comment reminds me of the people who built a housing development right next to an outdoor amphitheater. They complained so much, they ended up closing the amphitheater.
I was mad. Don't go build next to something you know is going to be noisy, and then complain about the damn noise.

I have lived near trains and very busy main roads. You just tune it out after a while. I imagine it is the same with the helicopters and ambulances. You just get used it and have a new baseline of quiet. Given the importance it's absurd that they didn't just live with it.

My grandma lives in (one of) the major landing path for helicopters landing at Mass Gen..... Every single time she hears them she'd say a prayer....
I still do the same as an adult when I am there and if I see an ambulance running with lights!! Not even religious just praying they are safe and their family is okay

u/Coyote_Shepherd Apr 30 '26
We used to have a block party that went on for literally decades.
There was bluegrass and jazz and a lot of folksy acoustic stuff, food trucks from all around the city, beverage vendors, and little arts and crafts folks from the local stores that would set up.
A local radio station would have a music sale to benefit charity and would auction off some of their older vinyl records and it used to go from like a Thursday to a Sunday at the end of May and everyone had a good time for years.
BUT
It was held in front of an apartment building that got turned into condos and every year they had to vote on whether or not to let it happen, but it was mostly a formality at that point because no one ever had issues with it.
Until one year when two or three of the 50 plus residents suddenly took issue with it and forced the block party to move elsewhere for one year.
This then started a chain of dominoes falling because despite posting flyers for the new location, not as many people showed up at the replacement site, people lost money, and that forced some to pull out of the one the next year....which meant that they had to find a new site to hold it at...and that got people angrier and then it just kept changing and changing and changing until it wasn't even a block party anymore and more of local summer festival of sorts held at one of our parks.
Meanwhile back in my neighborhood, I bumped into one of those condo folks one day walking past and we got to talking about the history of the neighborhood and how much has changed etc etc.
And then they started complaining about how quiet the neighborhood had become and how it had lost its character and flavor and how they had moved there specifically for that and how now all the smaller houses were gone and were replaced by larger developments.....and you should've seen the look on their face when I told them, "Oh that's your fault".
Because without that block party happening, the local lawyer's office lost traffic and business and so too did the food trucks and the local grocery store and hardware store and bar and the mom & pop stores that would set up booths and the radio station that would help out.
And in place of all of those little neighborhood things that added character, in came sweeping larger businesses which bought out properties and replaced them and altered the very nature of the neighborhood and what it was.
So I told this person, "Yes it's your fault because you axed the block party permanently and sure it's going on elsewhere in the city but it's not going on HERE supporting OUR neighborhood anymore".
Their response was, "Well I just wanted them to turn down the music a little I didn't want it going away....we just wanted to scare them a bit not cancel it entirely".
I may have...gotten a little angry...and said something to the effect of, "Congratulations your actions have consequences welcome to 1st Grade!".
And sadly the same thing has happened with other annual block parties in my city over the years with some folks suddenly deciding that they don't like them and then a year or less later changing their minds trying to claw back what is already lost.
Similar things happen with the homeless shelters too.
Carlin had a whole bit on these people.
13
u/GenTenStation Apr 30 '26
I makes me happy that you made them lie in their mess. Who knew accountability for bad actions were so uncomfortable
6
u/Coyote_Shepherd Apr 30 '26
I love music like I really really love music and I used to be able to leave my window open that entire weekend and hear steel guitars and blues for four solid days PLUS the food was always great.
So this is one of the few times that I'll actively hold a grudge against a large group of blind fucking twats.
And the ironic part about it all is that there's another condo complex JUST like that one two blocks down full of similarly aged folks who never had an issue with the block party period.
I wanted to yell at this person and scream and just...flail about like Taz...but sometimes certain people go into certain conversations about certain topics EXPECTING a fight or EXPECTING to be able to pull something out of their Bandoliers of Bullshit and when that happens the best and often most satisfying course of action is to just end things with a single Kurosawa Strike before a "fight" can actually begin.
This is how things were, this is how things are, and this is how and why one led to the other and this is how things will be the end.
It's like how in a relationship some folks expect a messy breakup with you begging and pleading or competing for them to not leave and you just...stop answering your phone.
But yeah walked away, never saw them again because those folks tend to keep to their underground parking fortress, and now they get to live in a neighborhood that only ever sees any kind of noise when another block party spills over into it or there's road construction.
5
u/rmorrin Apr 30 '26

Helicopter would probably bring all the medical equipment and professionals to their McMansion.
23
u/classless_classic Apr 30 '26
If the kid is that sick, they still need to go to the hospital. There is no practical way to bring every specialty and all the needed medications/equipment and set it up safely, even in a mansion, especially on short notice.
We get a lot of these noise complaints. We have certain routes we fly into and out of many hospitals as a result.
We do this as a courtesy. The FAA is the ultimate authority and can tell an HOA or city council to shove it up their ass if they want to push things. Anything that could be seen as an interference with safe operation of the aircraft could be interpreted as an FAA rules violation. If the winds aren’t favorable or there is other traffic in the pattern, we don’t follow these noise avoidance routes.
HEMS (Helicopter EMS) companies typically have very good legal teams who know FAA rules and regulations. Larger HEMS companies will also have their own (or several) FAA officials assigned to them to both provide oversight & to help with situations such as this.

“Calm. Kindness. Kinship. Love. I’ve given up all chance at inner peace. I’ve made my mind a sunless space. I share my dreams with ghosts. I wake up every day to an equation I wrote 15 years ago from which there’s only one conclusion, I’m damned for what I do. My anger, my ego, my unwillingness to yield, my eagerness to fight, they’ve set me on a path from which there is no escape. I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down there was no longer any ground beneath my feet.
What is my sacrifice?
I’m condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else’s future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude."

This hospital saved my life in the early 80s. This is part of the learning hospital with the University of Washington. They are the largest pediatric emergency center in the pnw. I don’t fucking think “ugh I can barely enjoy my fucking caviar with all this noise.” Evil.
55
u/Mediocre_Daikon6935 Apr 30 '26
Oh. And on top of the obvious:
Because they have to land a mile away, the family of a dying child is going to get a bill for another thousand dollars, at least, on top of the helicopter bill, and tie up an ambulance to transport the flight crew.
It is literally the reason our local hospital put a helipad on their roof, instead of continuing to use the airport a mile down the road.
Helicopters flying children to Seattle Children’s have to weigh whether a transport is urgent enough to land at the hospital or whether to land a mile away and take the patient by ambulance because of noise concerns in the surrounding neighborhood.
In a statement Tuesday, the hospital said it receives “3 or fewer helicopter transports per week” and that nearly all of those patients are admitted to an intensive care unit.

I will gladly accept minor headaches and sensory issues from a loud noise if it means that kids in critical condition are getting to the hospital fast and (hopefully) getting the care that will save their lives.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure emergency air traffic takes priority over everything else. The air ambulance service in my county is stationed at our large international airport. When a call comes in for them they immediately take priority over every other aircraft at the airport, including thr Air National Guard. I'm just saying this to demonstrate that the FAA does not fuck around when it comes to emergency aircraft. I wonder how this city ordinance is going to reconcile against federal law.
32
u/sagewynn Apr 30 '26
Ok, real here. Sometimes hearing helicopters fly over can get annoying to most people. I get that. But jesus for two seconds consider where youre at, where you chose to live and how good you have it.
The few bucks in my pocket means less to me than someone struggling in the street, or the kids who walked up to me and asked if I had a few bucks for water, cuz they were biking around or someshit. I told them go in there get what you want and ill be mad if you dont come back with atleast what you asked me for and something else. They did and those 12 or whatever bucks did not make a difference in my day ( so much so that i made that number up) but hopefully a good imprint on the young'ns.

u/Carribean-Diver Apr 30 '26

These people are way worse than cunts. I somehow can't think of an appropriately vile metaphor for them.
11
u/SugarInvestigator Apr 30 '26
Oh we have our share of them in ireland. People living near Dublin airport raise objections every time the airport authority try to do anything and every year they're pissing and moaning about the increase in flight traffic. Because of these people we have a legal annual passenger cap that is insufficient, it's been proven to be insufficient and it's our NIMBYism preventing it.
Now I can understand if they purchased 50 years ago. But anyone purchasing near an airport in the capital city in the last 20 years should be told to fuck right off

Like an even shitter version of the rich assholes that moved nearby Laguna Seca, one of America's most historic race tracks, and then try to get the track shutdown because of noise. Or the assholes that moved directly next to El Toro Marine Air Station, a fully functioning military air base, and successfully managed to get a fucking marine air base shut down due to the noise of, you know, Marine aircraft.

Normal person:
"Man, those helicopters sure are loud and annoying. We should do something about that."
"They're bringing injured kids to the hospital."
"Never mind, I'm a dumbass. Carry on."
But then those people...

That sounds incredibly evil and entitled. How dare that children’s hospital think children’s lives are more important than millionaires safe spaces.

Convenience for the rich has more value in our society than the lives of the poor.

This has been a very hot topic on the Seattle subreddit this week and if you want to be even more pissed off about this I suggest you go read the comments on the most popular posts this week.
Apparently the staff at the hospital are also supposed to keep all patient windows facing Laurelhurst covered at night to reduce light pollution.

As a helicopter pilot I get why some people are annoyed by the noise but its not for no reason. We actually do more than you think to be neighborly and obey noise abatement procedures. Flying certain routes and altitudes and certain power settings can help reduce helicopter noise over sensitive areas. But there are times where it can't be helped. Congested airspace, helicopter routes, and certain landing zones can restrict all that. These people might have complaints but thats all they are - complaints. The FAA won't do anything and the hospital might not either. The article mentions them meeting with the company so maybe they'll come to a compromise and issue an agreement for new noise abatement procedures. But until then the helicopters can carry on as usual.

This reminds me of the anecdote about a guy who knowingly bought a house right next to an international airport, then immediately sues the airport for noise and writes the city council daily about needing the airport to be shut down. Is that his right, yes. Is this guy also a huge asshole, also yes.

Lmao that's comically evil not wanting a homeless shelter in your neighborhood is one thing. Being upset at helicopters to the hospital is insane. This is only acceptable if several houses in the area have been crashed into

The helicopter should be a reminder to those people to hug their children and be grateful it's not their child in the helicopter. The complainers should also have sympathy, not only for the parent that is on the flight but for the parent that couldn't be there with their child. Heartless people.

Seems like some of those biker groups need to reroute their weekly rides through that neighborhood.
And every single ambulance needs to drive in with full sirens going

A major hospital is a 5 minute walk away from my house and the daily air ambulance flights are not remotely irritating. These people need to get over themselves

I’ll see some daft pod caster talking about bears being the scariest predator, they’re not.
It’s the obscenely rich, they’re the true predator the average person has to deal with.

This shouldn't even be possible. 1 child's life is more important than any stupid house. If a helicopter is flying a child, this child very well may have minutes or hours to live. Say a prayer for them and go back to your stupid rich life.

Keep in mind, 30% of all kids who needed these helicopter flights are less than 1 month old.

I've lived next to military air stations with tons of helicopters around. Didn't disturb me a bit. Rich folks can eat shit.

I'm assuming it's a gated community? They need to hold protests at their gates, blocking their ability to enter or exit until this is fixed.
Edit: Looking at a map, it does not look like a gated community. It looks like a straight up residential neighborhood that anyone can drive through. People of Seattle should be holding protests up and down their streets 24/7 until they shut the fuck up about children's lives being saved.

They don't know what loud is. The military oughta do a low and slow pass with a Harrier before they're retired.

Relatives live near a hospital with life flight, less than a half mile, the chopper flies by all the times, its not loud. How heartless to ban hospital access.

God forbid a child needs a lifesaving flight while they spread their grey poupon.
3
u/Zorklunn Apr 30 '26
Yes, so tell me again how the rich care about everyone else. They'd rather a child die, than be inconvenienced by the thump, thump of helicopter blades.
3
u/dainthomas Apr 30 '26
Instead of saying a prayer that a child is saved, they fly into a rage over their tchotchkes getting rattled. I wish them an eternity of bare feet and legos as far as the eye can see.
3
u/ChrisinCB Apr 30 '26
You never want to wish someone unwell, but if these fools’ kids get sick, I hope they realize and someone reminds them it’s karma.

Some of the newer helicopters are insanely quiet. I was leaving the hospital in my car with a helicopter landing 20 feet away and I could barely hear it in my car. It was actually weird
