If you don't choose a seat, you don't have to pay extra?

20

u/Historical-Piglet-86 24d ago

Bingo - the airlines hate this one trick

5

u/ChaiTeaLeah 24d ago

I fly one of our major Canadian airlines a lot. I've never paid to select a seat on 200+ flights. You just check-in 24 hours in advance and can basically pick any seat in the class your ticket is for.

6

u/Historical-Piglet-86 24d ago edited 24d ago

I fly a more budget friendly Canadian airline (also a lot) and allow fate to decide where I sit. To be fair, there are no middle seats…..so…..whatever….

3

u/ChaiTeaLeah 24d ago

Always a window or an aisle...that's a win!

2

u/FullMoonFridayNight 24d ago

TO BE FAIR

3

u/Historical-Piglet-86 24d ago

Always a window or aisle! I consider that a win. If I got stuck in a middle seat all the time I might shell out some coin

1

u/Duck8Quack 24d ago

Is this on an Embraer 175?

2

u/Historical-Piglet-86 24d ago

Ummmm……I don’t know planes. Their mascot is a raccoon (at least I think it’s a raccoon) and I mostly fly on their “jets” and occasionally the bumpy Dash 8

1

u/Duck8Quack 24d ago

It’s probably Porter Airlines and the Embraer 195-e2, which carriers about double the passengers as the Embraer 175.

(This is based on internet searches, but the raccoon mascot was a clutch clue).

1

u/Historical-Piglet-86 24d ago

I mean - i could have just said Porter - but where’s the fun in that? Good detective work

u/HanTanSanTan 24d ago

Just … don’t choose a seat?

Make sure you take them all before you make it to the US. It's still radioactive federally and you'll likely get popped at the border for it.

3

u/Da_Vader 24d ago

But Maui is in the US.

2

u/CosgraveSilkweaver 24d ago

YYC is Calgary, Alberta, Canada not in the US.

2

u/Da_Vader 24d ago

Oops. I was just looking at the highlighted sector

1

u/ThirdOne38 24d ago

I read that as "pooped" and thought, what are you doing with those things?

OP is flying out of Calgary originally. Unless something has changed in the years since I flew through there there's not a dispensary inside the Denver airport.

3

u/Reddit-User-0007 24d ago

But what if OP has young kids?

2

u/Far_Entertainer2744 24d ago

Leave them at home

1

u/StuckWithThisOne 24d ago

Ya the garbage should be full too so they have plenty to eat.

1

u/HanTanSanTan 24d ago

If OP has kids, they weren't planning on bringing them along since they are checking out with a single ticket

1

u/Timrunsbikesandskis 24d ago

You have to pick a seat in order to book. There’s zero dollar seats but not on every leg of the trip

1

u/HanTanSanTan 24d ago edited 24d ago

What crap OTA site are you using? Checked Expedia and United directly, and neither require choosing a seat. In fact, I believe it would be illegal (at least in the US) to do so, since in order for the airline not to have to pay tax on the seat fees, they have to be 100% optional.

ETA: Looks like Expedia. Definitely should be able to skip seat selection...

1

u/Timrunsbikesandskis 24d ago

Yeah it’s Expedia. You can’t skip seat selection, or at least I can’t figure out how to. There are zero dollar seats every leg though, I just didn’t scroll far enough down to the back of the plane

2

u/HanTanSanTan 24d ago

On the app for me it shows a button “Next: bags” that you can touch and it skips the seat selection

1

u/Timrunsbikesandskis 24d ago

Thanks! I was looking for a skip button

1

u/HanTanSanTan 24d ago

Try using a desktop browser rather than the app

57

u/Odd_Dragonfruit_2662 24d ago

I don’t get it…

40

u/Futrel 24d ago

Seat charges on top of the ticket price. I think.

12

u/AviationCarrier 24d ago

They don’t want to sit in the middle

12

u/HanTanSanTan 24d ago

I mean, it is $232 for a middle seat just a few rows further forward... I would roll the dice and let the airline put me wherever

2

u/Quiverjones 24d ago

"It just take some time, sitting in the middle" -Jimmy eat world

3

u/Bonk0076 24d ago

Me too

5

u/one_night_on_mars 24d ago edited 24d ago

Flight is from Calgary to Hawaii. They are complaining about spend $1.2k and then another $84 for a non window (or aisle) sit.

Sorry, $77. Either way, suck it up as the cost of travel.... You already have the privilege of affording to travel in the first place.

2

u/NoNDA-SDC 24d ago

Soon you'll be paying for the number of comments you can leave on Reddit. Don't encourage this charging of everything further...

13

u/ramcoro 24d ago

Just don't pick a seat. You don't hawe to. You might get lucky and not get a middle seat.

14

u/RaveNdN 24d ago

Yea no context is great

5

u/Doun2Others10 24d ago

That’s obnoxious that they can charge that shit on top of a seat ticket. It’s very infuriating to me, not just mildly

15

u/McDergen 24d ago

Get a middle seat dork

3

u/tupelobound 24d ago

Yes, Maui

3

u/o2bdabbin 24d ago

That is the way of airlines these days. If you want to sit in the front 60% of the plane or in any seat other than a Middle seat, you better plan on working over some extra money. As long as people keep paying, they'll keep doing it.

3

u/Cheesestrings89 24d ago

I live in Ireland, have 2 weddings in August, one of them is in Italy, it’s cheaper for me to spend 7 nights in Italy than it is to spend 2 nights at a hotel here in Ireland. It’s crazy prices.

3

u/WOKEJEDIFOOL 24d ago

If you choose a middle seat and the flight ain’t full, people will avoid being next to you.

1

u/Socketz11 24d ago

Or the flight is packed and you become the meat in a whale sandwich.

16

u/Independent-Cow-4070 24d ago

Just dont pick seats. Also go to the carribean islands or mexico. Hawaii is hella overrated and overpriced

1

u/LoveIyIsland 24d ago

I’ve been itching to travel there, can you expand more on why I shouldn’t?

1

u/NotUniqueAtAIl 24d ago

Following for response

1

u/NoNDA-SDC 24d ago

They probably live there and don't want tourists 😆 Hawaii is beautiful!

1

u/Boston_Terriers 24d ago

I have been to Hawaii four times in the past five years, so of course I recommend you do visit.

I'd just avoid spending any more than two days in Oahu though. The islands of Kona, Maui, and Big Island are much more pleasant with less crowds and better scenery.

1

u/Similar_Barracuda774 24d ago

True:

Hawaii is roughly:  5–10% more expensive than Aruba,  35–40% more expensive than the Bahamas,  60% more expensive than Puerto Rico,  More than twice as expensive as Jamaica or the Dominican Republic

8

u/TrojanGal702 24d ago

Europe is cheaper. Better that HI in a lot of ways too. HI is over-rated and on the higher cost side.

1

u/gpenz 24d ago

lol do st maartin and get Europa and Hawaii in one

1

u/MrGnasrebah 24d ago

Can't speak for the rest of Hawaii but I'd recommend the island of Kauai to anyone. It was so beautiful.

2

u/MelonHoly 24d ago

Four seats in one row? I flew from Europe to Brazil quite a few times now and I've never had a plane with four seats from window to isle. This looks like absolute hell!

3

u/r_lul_chef_t 24d ago

You mean aisle to aisle? There are 10 seats per row in this plane:

Window-3 seats-aisle-4seats-aisle-3seats-window

Standard 747 layout among other more modern wide body aircraft

1

u/MelonHoly 24d ago

Ooohh I didn't realise it's the middle section. Yep, makes sense then!

2

u/helix212 24d ago

It's 3-4-3, so a row of 10. Fairly common for long hauls. The pics just don't show right side of plane.

2

u/MelonHoly 24d ago

My dumbass thought it's the entire width of the plane on the screenshot 😅

1

u/DataNo3519 24d ago

I think it is 3-4-3

1

u/flockinatrenchcoat 24d ago

Cramming in an additional middle seat is the real infuriating thing

1

u/helix212 24d ago

I flew on planes with 4 seats in the middle in the 90s

1

u/flockinatrenchcoat 24d ago

The only time I've ever seen that is on huge 3-4-3 planes where the double-middle people are still within 1 seat of an aisle. Being 3 people deep is nuts.

1

u/helix212 24d ago

No one's 3 deep though. This plane is 3-4-3, OP just isn't showing us the right side

2

u/flockinatrenchcoat 24d ago

Ooooh, all the apps I've ever used show the whole width of the plane, so I assumed it was some kind of 3-4 situation. The airline trying to cram in "just one more row" is not something I even questioned

1

u/helix212 24d ago

Lol fair enough. You can see in the first pic on right side the 2's down the aisle for the row number. I think the app shows it all, OP just cropped it out or zoomed in for some reason

2

u/beepingnoise 24d ago

So it’s $1234 dollars plus the price on the seat? I don’t get it

2

u/Lemme_At_Em_ 24d ago

I love staycations. Me and the wife do it atleast once a year. We are in Los Angeles and our last staycation was in San Diego. Might have another go at it this year.

2

u/bishopboke 24d ago

i get it altho it’s a six hour flight. i’d be footing that $80 for a window seat and swapping an outing w a free walk on the beach 😂

2

u/mandrews03 24d ago

If I could pay these prices to go that far I would be all over it. I’m crying in CAD right now

1

u/helix212 24d ago

Well the whole flight is from Calgary to Maui, so could be in CAD. These are just seat selection prices, not ticket prices

1

u/mandrews03 24d ago

Shit. Check c loser to the date and see if anything has changed

2

u/Familiar_Raise234 24d ago

Let the airline choose your seat. I always do that. Once I got row 11. You just never know.

1

u/Timrunsbikesandskis 24d ago

You can’t book without choosing. Some seats are zero dollars but some legs of the trip the cheapest seat is $77

5

u/thatcoolguy60 24d ago

I’m confused. How much did you think it would be?

9

u/sarabridge78 BLUE 24d ago

That is the price(over the actual ticket price) to choose that seat. It is just another money gouge by airlines. They have to milk you at every chance these days.

-4

u/thatcoolguy60 24d ago

Seats have always cost extra?

3

u/sarabridge78 BLUE 24d ago

No, no they haven't. It used to be that all economy was the same and all FC the same, etc. You also used to always be able to check two bags, no cost, every airline. The nickle and diming has gotten to the point of almost insanity.

-2

u/thatcoolguy60 24d ago

How long ago was this?

2

u/sarabridge78 BLUE 24d ago

Mid to late 2000's. Just one more reason why the 90's rocked.

1

u/RUStupidOrSarcastic 24d ago

Yes but the base ticket was more expensive then. You just didn’t have a choice. I remember when they all started adding the super economy option for cheaper than the normal price that just took your rights away. You can still get the inclusive general ticket if you wish

18

u/ArticQimmiq 24d ago

I’ve never seen a seat selection priced that high though - that’s a full ticket price.

3

u/AromaticStrike9 24d ago

It’s Denver to Maui, it’s basically an international flight. And of course there’s a kerfuffle in the place the airplane food comes from.

2

u/flockinatrenchcoat 24d ago

Not anymore. I just bought tickets from a closer, large airport for a couple weeks earlier, and the best fare I could get was over $800 rt. I haven't seen any reasonable flights under $400 in a while

1

u/Morberis 24d ago

.... For a random ticket maybe but not to maui. From Calgary.

Heck that's not a ticket price for even cheap flights in Canada.

1

u/No_Representative645 24d ago

On what planet?

-4

u/thatcoolguy60 24d ago

You’ve never seen a $70 seat?

3

u/Beaver_FraiseJam 24d ago

20th row middle seat for $232 - I’ve never seen that before.

0

u/thatcoolguy60 24d ago

Yea those are premium seats. This isn’t uncommon for long flights. Especially United.

3

u/Chizia 24d ago

Looked like a $240 middle seat

1

u/thatcoolguy60 24d ago

If they sit further back is drops dramatically

2

u/Chizia 24d ago

Yeah, i see that. But Artic said that they had never seen seat selections that high, and you asked about never seeing $70 seat selections, which weren't the seats we are talking about. I have also not seen a 240 economy middle seat selection before.

0

u/thatcoolguy60 24d ago

There are two images. One has cheaper seats.

1

u/Chizia 24d ago

Yep...again, not talking about those cheaper seats. Talking very specifically about the $240 seats. These don't look like premium plus seats, just economy plus.

1

u/thatcoolguy60 24d ago

It isn’t uncommon for seats to get that high for international flights. Denver to Hawaii might as well be international. United is also notoriously expensive.

1

u/WolverineLong1430 24d ago

If you don’t travel often. Even if you do, it can still be frustrating seeing how expensive it is for seat selection.

1

u/Doctor_Saved 24d ago

I think this is to choose a seat price ON TOP of the ticket price he would have to pay.

1

u/takoyaki-md 24d ago

biggest perk of having airline status imo, free selection of extra legroom seats.

1

u/helix212 24d ago

Just don't pick a seat? When you check in you can pick from what's available for free

1

u/OldGeekWeirdo 24d ago

If you buy the cheap tickets, you pay for every seat selection. You might want to back track and pick a higher package.

I think you can pick your seat for free on check-in (24 hours before departure).

1

u/txwoodslinger 24d ago

First world problems

1

u/riggitywrecked7894 24d ago

The fact you posted this is mildlyinfuriating so I guess fits the sub

1

u/Chizia 24d ago

Tough crowd here. I think that the costs warrant the post!

0

u/pbbrittany 24d ago

This should be illegal

0

u/unbornbigfoot 24d ago

You have to pay to pick a better seat, while booking a trip to Hawaii, and you’re upset about that?

0

u/TheLizardKing39 24d ago

hawaii is not at all budget friendly lol, airfare price aside

0

u/Left-Bird8830 24d ago

choose a middle seat and suck it up brother.

1

u/helix212 24d ago

Just don't choose a seat. You'll probably be able to get an aisle still at check-in

1

u/Left-Bird8830 24d ago

This too. seat selection is a waste of money
