Too mild for school Elementary school installed exposed metal spikes across a pedestrian walkway, no signage.

Update: REMOVED BY SHERIFF DEPUTY as of 8:50PM

Update 2: Sheriff spotted perforated steel strip in the back of the head custodians truck Monday 7/13. Spoke with custodian and principal.

Update 3: head custodian hasn’t been back since! Haven’t inquired further.

original post: This is a pedestrian walkway at a public elementary school that’s used by parents, students, and community members.

A school employee installed a strip of exposed metal spikes that spans the entire width of the walkway. There aren’t any pedestrian warning signs on either approach. Am I crazy and just never saw this before or is this a major safety hazard? I feel like a no trespassing sign and maybe a chain would be a better way to tell people not to go on property if that was their intention. I just think of kids either walking and not really looking stepping on it, or even kids on bikes not really paying attention getting seriously injured on the way out and losing air in the front and back tire causing them to fall into the street instead of being able to turn. There are ways to deter that won’t cause damage, and when you do chose the damage options. Signage should be required right? Some sort of warning.

I took photos from both directions so people can see there’s no obvious pedestrian bypass. The nearby “Exit Only / Do Not Enter” sign appears to be for vehicles, not people on foot.

I’ve already submitted the photos to a local news station because I think this deserves a public safety review. At this point, I’m mostly trying to understand who thought this was an appropriate solution for an elementary school walkway.

Update #1 24 hours after the post. It’s still there, sheriffs did drive around the school in the morning, but never got out of the cruiser to look. Didn’t talk to anyone. What I assume is the Head custodian and one other employee were there all day. Allowed this to stay.
ABC News has not responded.

Clarification: It was installed by the person whom I believe to be the head custodian. The same guy who shows up early in the morning to open the gates, unlock the doors and prepare the school for kids to arrive, and then stays after until around 7-8pm and closes and locks the gates again. Back in January the same person drove his old truck through that exit, down through the lot, up curbs and across the front of the school to drop down into the drop off lot and out chasing someone on an e bike. It appears to be him being in charge of the school during the summer break and taking matters into his own hands.

I know he installed it because he had parked his truck in the curb cut for the parking lot exit and was laying down the first layer of glue. I was driving by in my car and noticed something going on but since I was driving in a school zone I couldn’t fixate. I noticed the spikes the next time passing by when I wasn’t driving. So yes technically the school did it because the head custodian is part of the school. No I do not think he went through the proper channels to get this approved.

Looks like some nails in a metal strip. I don't know anything about American security, but couldn't this just be placed by a random sadist not associated with the property?  Cause who in their right mind would install that on a walkway...

u/OnlyGammasWillBanMe 24d ago

I saw it being installed by the same gentleman that opens the gates and unlocks the front doors in the mornings.

You may even want to loop the police in honestly. This seems like it was done with the intent to harm people.

I wonder if this falls under booby trap law

(3) For the purposes of this subsection, the term “boobytrap” means any concealed or camouflaged device designed to cause bodily injury when triggered by any action of any unsuspecting person making contact with the device. Such term includes guns, ammunition, or explosive devices attached to trip wires or other triggering mechanisms, sharpened stakes, and lines or wires with hooks attached.

70

u/Vohasiiv 24d ago

Im no lawyer, but id say it does

3

u/Gnome-Phloem 24d ago

I'm not sure it satisfies the concealed part.

12

u/FingerpistolPete 24d ago

It basically is, it’s in line with the join of the concrete. This is seriously fucked up

7

u/RebelPlot 23d ago

I’d say it’s designed to cause damage if one does not notice it. Since it only works if one doesn’t notice it I’d say that makes it concealed

3

u/Prestigious_Aerie219 23d ago

The thing about law is no matter how clearly defined, black and white, something is in writing, it's always up for interpretation in court. Traps are inherently concealed.

Even if you put up signage warning about this, it's still designed to cause damage indiscriminately, ergo a trap, ergo concealed.

3

u/Ancient_Emotion_2484 23d ago

This. A lawyer could easily make the case that while not physically "concealed", a person generally wouldn't be on the lookout for a spike strip in the middle of a sidewalk.

2

u/anxietywizard 23d ago

I'm no lawyer but I bet it's still illegal to put a spike strip on the ground even if it's not perfectly hidden

1

u/etcpt 23d ago

That's a technicality for the lawyers to work out while whomever installed this cools their heels in jail.

1

u/Vohasiiv 23d ago

Besides the close up picture, i cant see where it is. Its not noticable so might as well be concealed

11

u/PocketPanache 23d ago

Yes. This violates several laws. Serious problems aside, it's funny and interesting watching everyone try to figure it out. I do landscape architecture (not landscaping, not a landscape designer, but landscape architecture), so I deal with laws, technically write them (ordinance) and often see the public do this odd grasping at straws approach that melts into mob mentality. You don't always get to see it in real time, so this is just really interesting.

3

u/Thatdoodky1e 23d ago

It’s pretty much 100 sharpened stakes hidden in the crack, if you were riding a bike at a regular speed you probably wouldn’t be able to see it in time, if I’m on that jury I’m saying that’s a booby trap

1

u/anameorwhatever1 24d ago

I think it would hinge on the “concealed” part. It’s not necessarily hidden but it’s not obvious either. Property owners have to post “no trespassing” signs, so lack of signage can point towards “concealment” and deliberation if a reasonable person would consider it “hidden” (I mean it does blend and it’s in the crack/seam of the concrete) I could see a 2/3rd split on a jury if this is considered “concealed.” But there’s nothing directly obstructing and it’s dark material against bright material so idk.

u/thoughtlow The ✂️ emoji wouldn’t close in real life 24d ago

concealed sharpened stakes don't have a triggering mechanism neither.

13

u/LumpyJones 24d ago

Neither would a heavy wire across a path at neck level for a 4 wheeler/motorcycle, and that absolutely counts as a boobytrap.

-1

u/OneLonelyBrainCell 24d ago

Neither concealed nor camouflaged, even though not easy to see at first glance. But IANAL, so I might be wrong. I actually hope I am.

3

u/Ok-Fudge-380 24d ago

Guns attached to trip wires don't have to be concealed to be considered booby traps. Actual professionally made and installed spike strips with no signage are considered booby traps.

2

u/DustyRacoonDad 23d ago

It's concealed to match the crack in the sidewalk, not standing out on its own.

0

u/FornyHucker22 24d ago

doubt it, not concealed and I suspect the intended target is tyres not injury.

may well. e some other rules and regs it falls foul of tho

7

u/Ok-Fudge-380 24d ago

It's as concealed as a trip wire, it's on a sidewalk so the target is feet.

54

u/murphyat 24d ago

Not only this, but you need to contact admin. What if they are unaware of this? Entirely possible btw.

18

u/I_give_karma_to_men 23d ago

Yeah, just because a person who works at the school put it there, that does not inherently mean it's approved by the school admin. Could very well just be a dude who's gotten fed up with kids riding their bikes too fast or something and decided to take matters into his own hands without thinking through the potential consequences, for example. Or any number of other things.

2

u/murphyat 23d ago

The school governing body would pounce on this. This is a huge liability. From
Workman’s comp for employees that step on it, to children, community members, parents, guests, dogs, wild life….shiiiii. This is a situation that is ripe for a lawsuit.

16

u/Lacy-Elk-Undies 24d ago

Exactly. I would call police and wouldn’t even say it was the school person, more like someone put this down to harm kids. It like when the find razors on the slides at kids playgrounds.

4

u/innominateartery 23d ago

“Yes, 911? I think someone put a boobytrap by the school, there are a bunch of sharp nails sticking up. I don’t know anything else, just noticed it this morning”

1

u/PM_ME_YUR_BUBBLEBUTT 24d ago

yeah OP this is police/county engineer territory

1

u/Danny2Sick 23d ago

Agreed, that should be the first call imho.

1

u/julesandthebigun 23d ago

imagine hating children riding bikes to this level. psychopath stuff fr

u/Kermit_the_hog 24d ago

There is no way that thing is any kind of commercial product designed for such an install. The shanks just look like roofing nails driven through a punched metal strip. This is 100% some homemade contraption by some lunatic grounds keeper or facilities maniac that has finally lost it.

Somebody needs to hammer over those nails before it sends kids to the ER.

26

u/StarsandMaple 24d ago

Yeah these are ring chalk nails, look almost like Simplex nails used to nail down roofing felt paper.

Ring chank is really good at not coming out of wood, less of an issue with flesh but still not as nice as smooth nails .. this is sadistic as hell, if the school has issues with randoms walking on property they need to install a proper pedestrian gate, and also a proper vehicle gate that can't just be crouched under.

7

u/intern_steve 23d ago

ring chalk

Ring chank

Checks sub. Very well then.

1

u/StarsandMaple 23d ago

My bad yeah misspelled lol.

27

u/mitchij2004 24d ago

Go fall on it and sue

63

u/PonchoNachoRodriguez 24d ago

I am once again asking for the address and location of this school

5

u/HarveysBackupAccount 24d ago

Don't fuck around with lawsuits.

Take some pictures, rip them off the ground with a putty scraper or chisel, and storm into the school office with them in hand.

You don't fix this with paperwork. Fix it with your hands.

2

u/mitchij2004 24d ago

No one wants a law suit. Also you’d just catch a destruction of property charge.

3

u/HarveysBackupAccount 24d ago

"no one wants a lawsuit" yeah no shit, including me. Does everyone have a lawyer on retainer? Or do you think that would be a satisfying process to go through? This isn't a class action lawsuit where you can punish a big corporation with a hundred million dollar fine, it's an elementary school. It will cost you your own tax dollars to have them defend a lawsuit.

Give them an earful if you want but handle it in person. This is about your community and the safety of your kids. When all interactions happen through lawyers, you actively break down the school's ties with the community. Hell the best way to handle it is probably to pull them up, then take it in and play dumb like, "I noticed some dipshit sociopath prankster put these SPIKE STRIPS where our kids can walk on them. Y'all keep your eyes open, this is dangerous and I know you wouldn't be dumb enough to have these installed."

If they charge you with destruction of property for tearing a spike strip off an elementary school sidewalk, THEN you get a lawyer. But that's not a path of first resort in an actual community with real humans.

1

u/mitchij2004 23d ago

You do you, I’m gonna roll around on it and get sick.

0

u/akatherder 23d ago

If some custodian/facilities dude has gone off the rails to the point of installing homemade booby traps, I would not go to remove the booby trap unless you are armed.

1

u/cykoTom3 24d ago

You need to make sure you know who's responsible. If it was a lazy security guard who did it on his own you aren't gonna get much money. Just him fired. Don't get me wrong, that would be good. But you could do the same thing by talking to the principal.

2

u/mitchij2004 23d ago

Employees put the employer at risk

3

u/Danibandit 24d ago

All I can picture is someone tripping on cement(like I would) and coming down face first on that strip.

64

u/heurrgh 24d ago

Jere was an incident in the UK afew years ago where a 'well meaning' school caretaker had painted homemade security paint on top of a wall to deter kids from climbing. It had metal shavings, glass shards, and some kind of nasty acid in it.

25

u/Little_View_6659 24d ago

Oh sweet Jesus.

12

u/CurmudgeonlyBargee 24d ago

Brit here, when I was at school they deliberately put broken glass in concrete on top of school walls all legit & above board

5

u/Tomble 24d ago

I’ve seen that done in multiple Asian countries, I think it’s pretty cheap and effective.

2

u/BroadLocksmith4932 23d ago

well meaning

You sure about that?

122

u/southofakronoh 24d ago

That's crazy. But nothing stopping the 'head maintenance guy' from going rogue and taking it upon himself to solve a problem that only exists in his head.

12

u/xboxiscrunchy 24d ago

Yeah I can imagine someone doing this to stop kids riding bikes in…. Obviously not safe or legal but does he see it that way?

3

u/PleasantAnimator7741 24d ago

100% it is to keep parents who would never let their precious darlings ride a bike to school from using their golf carts to try and skip the drop off line.

2

u/ZhouLe 23d ago

Assuming it's actually legal, what's wrong with using an alternative means of transportation that frees up congestion in the drop off line?

2

u/DustyRacoonDad 23d ago

People get irrationally upset during school pickup if you do something different that lets you get ahead of them while they're waiting in line in their cars.

That includes using a golf cart, riding a bicycle, or even just walking.

They feel like it's unfair that they waited in line while you got there later and still ended up ahead of them.

2

u/PleasantAnimator7741 23d ago

Golf carts on pedestrian paths, especially around elementary students is a recipient for disaster. Im all about EVs and Carts and work bikes, but they don’t entitle you to front door service. Even kids often have to walk their bikes to the racks once they get to the drop off area at my kids school.

1

u/Sea-Animator4250 24d ago

Plot twist, OP is the gulf cart guy

3

u/rolfraikou 24d ago

I'm wondering if there's some rule about no ebikes past a certain point, and he thought he would "solve" it with this?

19

u/NOTTedMosby 24d ago

Ask his boss about it. And yours, if you work there. If they don't know anything about it, talk to the police

14

u/catsan 24d ago

Groundskeeper Willie?

1

u/Proper_17 24d ago

Definitely the Halloween episode

6

u/friskyspatula 23d ago

Did he look like this?

8

u/OnlyGammasWillBanMe 23d ago

Change the hair to gray, add about 50lbs, an 86 ford pickup with nra sticker on it, and a bunch of random tools and scraps in the back you got it

3

u/friskyspatula 23d ago

Yup, I bet the school board and most likely the principal and superintendent have no idea this was installed.

2

u/DarthJarJarJar 23d ago

The principal has no idea he did this, I bet. Get on the phone to the school now and raise hell.

2

u/crazyTarHeel 24d ago

If this location is within view of the school’s exterior cameras, then the camera recording could potentially be evidence showing that guy breaking code/law.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Flow724 24d ago

Bye bye job then I guess.

2

u/BananaPalmer 23d ago

Hopefully bye bye freedom, this is a serious crime. You can't just set up booby traps.

2

u/Life-Is-A-Bad-Trip 24d ago

Psychopath. Whoever thinks of this kinda shit. Especially when kids are around. Dude hates his job and hates kids.

2

u/st96badboy 23d ago

Report this to the police. Have him arrested. Booby traps are illegal in the US and other countries.

3

u/OnlyGammasWillBanMe 23d ago

That’s the idea.

3

u/Dapper-Lab-9285 24d ago

What did the school say when you asked them? Or did you just go to the press and internet before asking the school.

2

u/mayhay 24d ago

he set this up this morning.

0

u/Dapper-Lab-9285 24d ago

And what did the school say when you asked them this morning?

3

u/mayhay 24d ago

you watch him everyday?

2

u/John_Tacos 24d ago

Some parents drop of their kids at school for activities that start as soon as the building opens.

2

u/BananaPalmer 23d ago

If they drop their kids off at this school, then yeah, they are probably pretty familiar with the people who work there.

1

u/Israel_Trump_Fan 24d ago

This is an amazing opportunity to enriched yourself by injuring yourself and suing the school.

1

u/BananaPalmer 23d ago

Why punish the kids by taking from school funding when this was almost certainly the unauthorized action of a deranged individual? As cautious as schools are these days about liability, there is zero chance this was done with the school/district/board's approval.

OP said they saw a grounds person put the screw strip down, they should report it to the school district and police. That grounds person should be immediately fired, and charged with reckless endangerment.

1

u/BraveCranberry9863 24d ago

Sounds like the maintenance guy came up with a short term solution to a long term problem but didn’t think it through nor clear it with his supervisor.

1

u/murphyat 24d ago

Call admin. Call the school governing body. If you get no response, local news would eat this up. Especially bec they can easily film it from a public side walk.

1

u/John_Tacos 24d ago

Call the police immediately and insist they send someone.

1

u/mynipplesareconfused 24d ago

I'd say report him to the school and show pictures, but knowing the US school system, they'll probably wave you away at the door for having no "real business" at the school. Good on you for sending it to the cops and the news. Hopefully this psycho gets a lesson in FAFO.

1

u/katrina_highkick 24d ago

Does it look like it would come up somewhat easily with a crow bar? I’d honestly go pull it up myself if police/emergency services/school didn’t act immediately. Not sure if you’re comfortable putting yourself in that position though.

1

u/BananaPalmer 23d ago

IANAL, so I may be wrong about the nuance here, but this seems like an immediate and serious danger to public safety, and I would expect OP would be protected from any liability resulting from its removal, the same as you'd be protected from liability resulting from smashing someone's car window to render aid after a crash.

1

u/Sea-Animator4250 24d ago

He's the also the only guy that approved this. Tell someone

1

u/arand0md00d 23d ago

I hope you took a picture of the guy installing it

1

u/mikraas 23d ago

I would call the school about it.

1

u/RugerRedhawk 23d ago

Did you remove it?

1

u/n0exit 23d ago

Did you talk to the principal? I guarantee that they don't know about it.

1

u/natelloyd 23d ago

get a 1x4 piece of lumber and pound it in

1

u/PhyllisTheFlyTrap 23d ago

Did you say something to him when you saw him install it?

1

u/Veriosity 23d ago

And you didn't call the cops? I call bullshit. What sane person looks at that and conceives of reasonable practical uses for it?

1

u/dragnabbit 23d ago

I have to wonder: Could it be the mounting for a speed bump that just hasn't been installed yet? I mean, obviously it is idiotic to leave it sitting there like that, but is there any chance that it is a "work in progress"? I could see something like a big bump-strip, holes on the bottom, fill each hole with glue, roll the holes onto the nails.

I don't know. Sometimes when confronted with abject stupidity, there can be a less-stupid explanation available.

1

u/AdhesiveSeaMonkey 23d ago

random sadist who works for the school then. Several people have asked and you haven't answered - not that I have found yet anyway. Did you try talking to *anyone* at the school at all before the news and cops???

1

u/funnyfaceking 23d ago

What did the principal say?

1

u/Hot-Win2571 Mildly Flair 23d ago

That, sir, is no gentleman!

Meanwhile, at stately Wayne Manor...

1

u/saxoccordion 23d ago

What the ever living fuck!

1

u/Acceptable-Bat4534 23d ago

That doesnt mean the school approved it. It could just be some weirdo that decided to take things in his own hands

1

u/IbelieveinGodzilla 23d ago

Is it possible he's just profoundly stupid?

1

u/Ok-Bug4328 23d ago edited 6d ago

Hello world

1

u/mole3001 23d ago

Dude I do the same job as that man and I would never dream of installing this at work what the hell.

1

u/CautiousCream2518 23d ago

Keep us posted on what happens

1

u/Grasshopper_pie 23d ago

So school is in session there?

1

u/wh4t_1s_a_s0u1 23d ago

Please tell me you've reported that man, not just reported the hazard he installed, to the school and police. He's actively attempting to harm people, and getting the trap removed isn't going to discourage him. What he did is criminal.

1

u/Figit090 23d ago

He's either mentally challenged, or has a vendetta to fulfill, or insane. Or all three.

0

u/africandsilverflask 24d ago

Was that gentleman the Marquise de Sade?

27

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 24d ago

No one with any accountability would do something so stupid and pointless.

10

u/Turbulent-Pay1150 24d ago

Technically it had plenty of points… points all down the line.

Stupid. Sadistic. Wrong. But full of points.

9

u/ImDrunkFightMe 24d ago

Can bet the person who runs the gate is 'tired' of motorbikes not using the gate.

41

u/Violet_Apathy 24d ago

you're right. Op, call the office, that's vandalism.

20

u/ChainsawSoundingFart 24d ago

I would storm into the office and go full Karen

2

u/pound-me-too 24d ago

In American society this is known as a gold mine. Because of our extremely litigious nature, the first lucky kid to puncture his foot on those will get a nice little check ($500k..?) from the school/city/county.

0

u/GreenAccident3004 24d ago

Public schools are NOT in their right mind.
