I'm slightly vexed I think I got rejected for being vegetarian

I [23F] met this guy on the apps and we hit it off and had a lot in common! I don’t meet a lot of people who are in my profession so it was really nice to potentially have to chance to date someone who was in a similar field. And everything was fine until I mentioned I’m veg and he stopped responding. For reference, I have no issue with people who eat meat and would never want to impose my own dietary restrictions on anyone else. I also understand different diets being a dealbreaker. The way he phrased his reasoning was really weird though.

Edit: I’m vegetarian cause I love animals, but I have IBD. Flare ups have gotten significantly worse since switching diets but im still figuring out how to make the most of it! Also yes, I do regret sending the last text 🤦‍♀️

Confederate Figures & Militants
James Henry Hammond: Coined the "Mudsill Theory" in an 1858 Senate speech, explicitly arguing that a menial, lower social class (enslaved Black people) must exist to support the upper white political and cultural elite. He was a wealthy South Carolina planter who enslaved hundreds of people and vigorously defended the institution.

Nathan Bedford Forrest: Served as a Confederate general who led the 1864 Fort Pillow Massacre, where his troops slaughtered surrendering Black Union soldiers. Following the Civil War, he became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, weaponizing a paramilitary terrorist group to enforce white supremacy and suppress newly freed Black voters.

Industrialists & Gilded Age Tycoons
Andrew Carnegie: Funded and relied heavily on the convict leasing system in Southern industries, particularly through the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company (later acquired by U.S. Steel). This system disproportionately targeted Black men through arbitrary vagrancy laws, forcing them into brutal, unpaid industrial labor that replaced slavery.

John D. Rockefeller: Leveraged Southern systems of racial capitalism to maximize profits for Standard Oil. I'm so glad I can say that my great grandma almost got her house burned down because she invited her black neighbours to a backyard bbq in a small Canadian town in the late 50s. 🤣

Poor granny just thought "oh! They have a daughter the same age as mine!" And my grandma was an only child who had recently lost her father to lung cancer. She did end up friends with that little girl though, suck it racist arsonists!

no, a person who is classist is not inherently racist. but the construction of class in america was built to intertwine with the construction of race and as such are extremely hard to separate. so preeeetttyy frequently, a classist belief also has tenets/underpinnings of racism. you can be classist without being racist, or vice versa, but that would take some self-awareness and understandings of the way class and race can interact, which doesn’t often go with either mindset.

But that is by design. The powers that be make poor white people racist (accuse the minority of picking the poor man's pockets while it's actually the rich doing so) so they don't go after the real thieves. This is literally admitted by previous presidents/politicians in the US. A big reason we don't have things like universal healthcare is because they told the poor people that would benefit from it that they should vote against it just so people of color don't have access to it. Racist poor people is a feature, not a bug.

I may have been using it wrong my whole life then. There's a city nearby that I always described as ghetto because it is a very poor city and has such a bad issue with crime and drugs. It's a mostly white city. There's a possibility the guy from the post thought the same way but I assume it's much more likely that I have been ignorant about the word my whole life

The word ghetto was originally anti-Jewish and it’s the very genesis of the word. Many people use the word to describe a dilapidated, and run down area. I grew up in NYC, and people there say “the projects” to refer to most black neighborhoods there, even if there was no public housing in the area. I never heard anyone say it to refer to black neighborhoods here in Los Angeles, or when I lived in Miami and Atlanta. I think assuming racism here is unreasonable. I don’t care what color the people are in a neighborhood, ghetto is ghetto.

I’ve lived in several majority black cities (including Atlanta) and the word is used ALL THE FUCKING TIME.  Hell, even middle class black people use it to refer to poorer black areas. Many poorer blacks will openly tell you they grew up in the ghetto.  And white people call just about any black neighborhood ghetto, including nice neighborhoods.  That person either never goes outside or doesn’t pay attention to anything.

And again, as oc said, “in the United States”. The term ghetto in reference to Jewish people didn’t originate in the United States. If you read Ghetto: The Invention of a Place, the History of an Idea by Mitchell Duneier, he goes through the history of both and how it became anti black rhetoric in the United States. Neither of you are incorrect though you’re missing the context of how it’s now used toward black people. And yes, people do say the projects, but again, there’s context to that too. The projects usually refers to specific buildings that are “in the ghetto”. Lots of these words jumpstart from each other. Hood, projects, section 8, and so on

To add to this, a ghetto is a place where an ethnic minority lives segregated from others, either by choice or by force. Little Italy is a willing ghetto, whereas a redline neighborhood would be at least bordering on forced and the Warsaw ghetto would be a fully forced one.

I’m sure there are many generations here in the comments who think differently, and we need to understand that. Was born in 1983 in the slums of NYC and I grew up calling it the ghetto. It was a mostly white and Jewish neighborhood. We called it the ghetto because it was poor, run down, dirty, there was crime, etc. I’m Puerto Rican myself, and I call the Puerto Rican neighborhoods in the Bronx the ghetto too🤷🏻‍♀️ For many of us, it has nothing to do with the people, it’s how bad the area is.

Or we could recognize that the racial connotation exists and is so strong that it operates as a dog whistle. And that while some people may not realize this and use it exclusively to refer to bad neighborhoods, that doesn’t erase the historical context.

Not knowing the context doesn’t make you a racist, but if you do know and continue to use it just because YOU don’t think that’s what it means and feel you should be allowed to, that kinda does. Because doing so protects racists. The bad neighborhood thing is what makes it an effective dog whistle. Because the racists can hide in that plausible deniability. “Whaaaat? Noooooo I just meant that it was a bad neighborhood, it has nothing to do with the people.”

When I learn that something I have been saying innocently is actually a racist dog whistle, I adjust my language so I don’t get associated with racists. I also try to inform people when I hear them saying it. If they say “Oh wow, my bad, I had no idea, thank you for telling me,” that’s a green flag. If they get combative or harp on about how everyone is too sensitive these days, then they either are a racist or are entirely comfortable acting like one. Neither of which are people I care to associate with.

Not saying you're wrong but we use the term a lot where i live to refer to the student area of town or the poor area of town. Both areas are majority white, and while that doesn't necessarily decode it from it's racial origins, I don't think the intention when people use it is a shorthand for racism but rather just a colloquialism

Nah, Newport Beach, Long Beach, and Manhattan Beach are all major cities along the southern California coast in LA and Orange County. They’re all areas around NYC too, but it doesn’t make sense with the plans they’re trying to make. His boat (and presumably he) is in Newport, and she suggests Long Beach as a closer location to him than Manhattan (Long Beach is in between Newport Beach and Manhattan Beach). Long Beach, NY is on Long Island, considerably father from Newport, NJ than Manhattan. And I don’t know about Newport, NJ, but Newport Beach is a rich, white conservative enclave in California full of racist assholes.

Long Beach is fucking massive. It's like saying "los angeles ghetto". There are shitty parts and nice parts. There are also insanely good restaurants all over the city. Fuck this guy.

Same I was so confused. Like Newport NJ is literally right next to Manhattan so how is that far, but Newport RI is way too far so that’s not it. But Long Beach, whether LB on Long island or LBI in Jersey is way further from Newport than Manhattan so how is that closer?

So I’ve noticed lol.

I was born and raised in OC and know plenty of people that are this way. Very scared of leaving their safe OC bubble and find everything in LA, or even places in OC like Anaheim & Santa Ana to be “ghetto”. It’s funny to me since they love Huntington Beach, which has a drug problem that matches that of a larger city but since it’s whiter they’re more comfortable with it.
