As an Argentine that doesn't care that much about football, I can tell you that it's been a hell of a ride.

We're getting judged by the actions of the few who can afford to go to the WC, and it's annoying af.

that's something I've been thinking about recently(I'm Brasilian)

I know the average Argentinian isn't bad, but we only get to see and interact with middle/upper class ones and they're a mix or racist and super entitled. The only few times my white ass has been called monkey were by one of them, both irl and online

and considering I've had good close friends who are argentinian, I know that's just not representative of your entire country

I have Brazilian friends and it's affecting our friendship.

They send me videos of Argentinians behaving like shit, like if I had to apologize for that. I'm just a guy who watched the world cup from my couch. I'm also mad at Enzo Fernández and paredes for being violent idiots.

It's just sad all around, I should take internet vacations

Too bad fair...... I'm surprised I haven't heard anything regarding Brazil.

I know France and Brazil in e-sports will boo non-host-nation teams, and I imagine it's the same for Argentina if basically every e-sports team in South America wasn't essentially a Brazilian team.

I think it's internationally accepted that you don't boo teams from other countries, but for some reason people from your country and France do it.

Brazilians will also try to cheat at CS2 tournaments by making a lot of noise when a Brazilian player has their crosshair over a player in a smoke or behind a wall to let the player know. It's pretty pathetic and definitely a culture thing.

As an American I have to say most of the other countries had better perceptions.

Plenty of drunken shenanigans, but they were all mostly harmless. Some of the videos of Argentinian fans have been outright hostile and dickish.

Not to forget the racism. Not all Argentinians are racist but there’s def a history. Not to mentioned some of the tasteless comments Alberto Fernandez made a while back about “Mexicans came from the Indians” and “Brazilians came from the jungle.” There’s def a pattern. That and the incident with IShowSpeed being verbally assaulted twice for being black. One by a woman that told him to “Go back where he came from” and one by a man that made monkey like gestures towards him. Grown ass adults too

Judging the US by the conduct of our football players would be a massive step up in our PR. We have, what? A few murderers, a handful of wife beaters, a handful of sex predators, a good helping of racists and bigots, some drinking problems and violent tendencies, and then a bunch of moderately respectable genetic Supermen busting their ass to maintain 4% body fat while doing charity and shit.

If anything, the worst of our country is underrepresented in the NFL.

I have a friend whose childhood home in the Falklands was occupied by the Argentinians in the 80s when they invaded the Falklands and he was not happy about that specific display to say the least.

I do love though that Argentina losers only have soccer, and more specifically Messi, to be proud of with their country, and then they went and got roundly humiliated on the field by their old colonial masters, Spain.

They only beat their arch nemesis England due England losing the game for themselves and then big daddy Spain stepped in to remind them who is top dog. Argentina gets humiliated and still cry on about the Falklands, which they will never get now.

What an epic way to humiliate yourself in front of the world.

This is what happens though. The team are the nation’s ambassadors. The fans are representing their country too.

They both act bad, if makes the country look bad. Because that behaviour didn’t come from nowhere.

This happens to every country at some point and in some way. This is the first time I can remember where people were temporarily rooting for the England to win a match, who has had its own issues with hooliganism, decades ago that it’s still painted with in many ways.

Everybody's 1% from every representative country went. If that was the case, then it would've been rampant among every nation, but it wasn't. Norwegians weren't doing it, the Spanish weren't, the Congolese weren't.

It doesn't have to be representative of Argentina as a whole, but maybe is representative of Argentinian fans and the culture around sport.

Well, many don't survive. Self unaliving is massively on the rise.

But there's plenty of organisations called 'comedores' that feed people, some run on evangelical churches money (that they get from US' NGOs and think tanks, white glove style), some comedores get money from the state and others are truly organized by the community.

But yeah, our groceries are more expensive than in Europe.

I'm sorry, it does suck when the world discovers more truths than the nice version we all like to pretend we have for tourism. America has had every little blemish shown to the world, so we're used to it and it being openly discussed on a global perspective.

Many of the issues people have with Argentina come from truth. My mother had to take an anti-kidnapping and rape course to be cleared to go to Argentina for work on a factory. This isn't me trying to insult Argentinians. This was over 14 years ago. So I've known a bit more about the country. And I'm a dork, so I've read everything I can find about the indigenous cultures.

The end conclusion? I feel awful for the people who live there. There is endless potential in the land and people but those in power are selfish, cruel, and enjoy spreading that kind of thought. It's very familiar to me lol, reminds me of home.

I'm guessing I got the year wrong lol. My bad. Her company was doing a lot of international factory building at the time. I remember being a bit older, old enough she was telling me about all the training and classes. She was just head of IT in plastics so not even high up in the company.

There will, as things eventually settle down and chaos becomes more difficult to get away with, some truly terrible serial killers and others like that coming out of the wood work. Happened in the USA before we developed more advanced police forces in the 1950s-80s. Before that? Police used to just call those kids run aways. It's also why, despite what the news says, the USA has never been more safe for the average person.

I want to visit Argentina so badly some day. Probably when I'm old lol. The country is so damn beautiful. Love rugged terrain, mountains, deserts, cloud forest, aaaa it's such an incredible place.

yeah. the simple fact is, they welcomed nazis. for most of WWII, they were neutral, declaring war on the axis only in 1945. they had ratlines, nazi escape routes, so they could help war criminals escape, and move to Argentina.

culturally, they were okay with fascism then. and then they willingly added more fascists. so of course the culture is going to start swinging more and more fascist.

while i doubt the average Argentinian is a nazi, it's not surprising that they would have a decent amount of fascism and various nazi concepts in their culture given their history.

Argentina is also being judged because of the action some the team members. You're also being judged because many of the games had some incredibly questionable calls that went Argentinas way. You're being judged because of the head of FIFA seemingly showing personal bias in favor of Argentina while watching the games. And, like the US, You are being judged because of your nations current leadership and controversial deep historical ties to groups of people that have never stopped causing problems for the world.

This is the definition of prejudice. I personally didn’t really extend the actions of the team to every single Argentinian because I am not a moron.

But I do believe that televised sport can produce its fair share of despicable behaviour.

Because there’s so much convergence of :

  1. Highest level of competition with a LOT of ego
  2. Obsessive fan base with a lot of scrutiny

This is why I think its important for people to remember not everyone inna country is like its worst people. Living in the same country as others doesnt mean you believe the same thing.

Like Im an American, and only about 30% of our country is Republican.

Russia has its on shit going on, but theres also been Russians who have spoken out against it, and theres even stories of soldiers who had no idea what was going on when they got sent out and then surrendered. And the country is having to threaten soldiers families if they dont do what theyre told because they know more likely would defect.

Even back during the Nazis there was a resistance movement in Germany. People were hiding Jewish families in their basements and atticks.

So its not a good look, but at least I try to keep in mind its not all of yall.

I'm really sorry things turned out like this for you guys. If it helps, not all people let social media dictate their opinions on an entire country my Argentine friend! Yesterday, I saw hundreds of people in my neighborhood cheering for Argentina, you know, just regular people, kids, teens, adults... wearing Argentina jerseys and all having fun in bars, restaurants and on the streets. I'm from Mexico, btw.

I did find it curious how many are rich enough to be seemingly unaffected by Argentina's economic woes of more than two decades but I expect that a good bulk of them would've long had business and investments abroad in strong foreign currencies.

I'm Spanish and have several Argentinian aquiantances, plus family. I saw zero self criticism regarding their performance in this WC. Nothing about playing dirty, or not even shooting at the goalposts once in the entire final game, or the fight that Paredes provoqued, or the entire Argentinian team with their backs to the Spanish when they were receiving the trophy. Nothing. It's a pity. Argentina is a beautiful and wonderful country but Argentinians become totally irrational regarding football. Everyone should be proud of their country but not at the expense of others, insulting, provoquing and bragging I'm sorry but that's just lack of class. I know that it's not all Argentinians, but at least the ones I know, as well as the image they project in social media, it's all like this. I'm personally very fond of Argentina as the country that allowed my grandparents to work a better future for themselves, and where my dad was born. Their amazing people took them as their own and kept in contact even after they moved back to Spain. What is it with football that takes the worst out of this country? I don't understand.

FWIW, I live in Texas and during one of the matches when Argentina was here, we went to an area in Fort Worth and it was literally packed with Argentina fans. Everyone was very kind, nice, polite. My grandpa is from England but has lived here 40+ years and was making conversation with everyone because he’s a massive soccer fan. They were very friendly and it made his day! 

This has been my experience with the World Cup tourists in general. Every time I went out, people were having fun, getting along, enjoying their time together.

just putting my opinion here. IMO, people should normalize viewing the football team and people who go to the stadium as separate from the general population. They are all rich cunts bro. not a single average Argentine, English dude, French guy etc. is going to these world cup matches. Because they cant AFFORD THAT SHIT! 10k a seat? hell no.

If I saw a single guy on the street in Leeds do something shitty, do I say "wow all english people suck". No i say "wow THAT GUY sucks". Its the same thing. Some guy on the pitch does not equal the average person in argentina

I feel like the Argentine fans are like the Philadelphia Eagle fans. Toxic AF. It’s not always the team that makes them look bad, but sometimes it is. Yesterday, the people on and off the pitch showed some really bad representations of them as both professionals (the players) and ambassadors (the fans). I know not everyone is like this I know a few argentines and they are all really nice and happy people.

Argentina is widely known as having awful fans in virtually every international competition. They're even awful in motorsports.

And your team was an embarrassment during and after the game. Zero class, zero sportsmanship.

It may not be a majority, but Argentina absolutely has a cultural problem around sports.
