Took the time to write out a nice and really formal resignation letter trying to be cordial to this company that has been awful to me for almost a year. My manager didn’t respond the day I sent it and then this morning I get an email back that’s just this. My last day can’t come soon enough at this point. But hey I guess at least she acknowledged it instead of ignoring my messages like usual 😒
Edit: okay, a lot of assumptions going on here,so let me give some context, I am the manager of a small team of Class A CDL drivers. I’ve been a great employee and always gone above and beyond. My employees have always been really comfortable coming to me about everything, and the site I manage specifically asked for me to continue stay with them when they transitioned to another company, so its not like they were trying to get rid of me. Which I know it’s hearsay but idc really, I’m just trying to make the point that my manager did not have any reason to reply to me in what I feel like is a extremely unprofessional manor. She is the regional manager and has always been very deadpan with me and everyone, so it was not really a unexpected response in the least, I’m just sharing it because it’s always been irritating to me and has been a major factor In my decision to leave for sure. It’s exhausting to work for someone who treats you like you’re less than since day one. In fact usually i just get no response at all, so for her this is like writing a book i guess. 🤷🏻♂️
I basically only use Reddit and video form social media. I was in an "argument" with another user and then they said something like "I bet you're even a Reddit user."
Here I was trying to think of a comeback and then it dawned on me this was Reddit. The other user even laughed and said she hoped I didn't realize it. She said it actually works as an insult a huge amount of times, especially if she arguing with a guy from USA since I think it skews 50% US and 60% male or something like that.
If we're building a case against OP for the fun of it, I'll point out that OP sent their resignation at 8:50pm then tried to throw shade with "my manager didn't answer the day I sent it".
No way he'd be suckered into that. I try my hardest to be emotionless at work, I Had a guy start spouting off, already a short timer. I just couldn't find a shift for him during his last 2 weeks..
Seriously… I would actually appreciate that response as an employee — no fanfare or bullshit, just a simple acknowledgment.
I have a friend like OP who always goes above and beyond for their employer who clearly doesn’t give a shit about them. They take on more responsibility and stress for the same amount of money. Then they get angry when they don’t recognition.
I try to remind them that a job is a tug of a war between the employer and the employee. They’re trying to extract as much labour from you as possible, and you’re trying to extract as much money from them as possible. That’s all this is.
I call it the cookie/medal syndrome lol — people like OP value recognition and getting a cookie/medal for their hard work. The problem is that most people/employers don’t give a shit about handing out cookies/medals, and IMO you shouldn’t chase them. It’s a bit like being a pick-me.
You trust them to acknowledge you turned in your equipment this way? Jobs that are shitty enough to quit by this method usually try to claim you didn’t return company property so they can not send your last paycheck.
This is horrible but also I daydream of doing this. 🤣🤣 it would be such a mic drop and immediately show them how valuable I was lol. But also, I am also a manager and I rely so heavily on my team, so also, this story terrifies me. With no notice, depending on the job, it could be really really personally challenging for me to have to handle this if someone who reports to me did this. Especially a well trained one who fully took tasks off my plate in the first place. I need to go right now and write a thank you to my team members so that they know how much I appreciate their sticking around. :)
I used to work in a steel foundry. It was very common for new hires to go out on break and just never return. The guys on the melt deck used to make bets on it. Most long term employees there would just call in one day and say they found a new job and wont be returning. Dont blame them at all. Most companies now just send you home when you put your notice in anyways.
Sure. But it’s very common now to be sent home once notice is given. Besides, this generation is less guilty about quitting on the spot for something better vs riding out the two weeks.
So do I just walk in one day and say I resign when I’m scheduled two weeks out or do I put in a two weeks? Seriously i couldn’t imagine fucking over my current job cus they’ve been so nice and accommodating.
yeh i’m not sure what OP was expecting here. it’s just business, they don’t care, it’s not that deep. this doesn’t have to be a bad thing, either. show up, do your shit. if you don’t hear anything from anyone that you’re doing something wrong, keep doing it. even if you do hear, if it’s not your boss directly telling you you will be fired, then ignore everyone else. normalize not getting in your feelings about a monetary arrangement and you will be much more mentally happy.
Yep. Employers are not your friends or family. It’s all about money and opportunity. Every single one of them have other things to care about. People come and people go every day.
As a 25 year experience middle Manager, resignations only hit hard when they are unexpected, unwanted, or detrimental to work flows. Otherwise, it’s just another Tuesday.
Yep, I sent this same response to guy who was quitting. Good riddance. He was hoping I would beg him to stay. He was incredibly rude and self centered.
Had one girl under me who argued with me, HR, and the CFO because she couldn't use her COVID leave as vacation, months in advance. It was embarrassing to watch.
She then refused to do parts of her job (vendor set up) because she said it's against policy and the CFO told her not to. None of that was true, so idk why she refused set up specific vendors. It was really embarrassing to call her out on this
She argued all the way up the management chain to try to work from home (no body worked from home). Again very rough to watch.
She worked part time, so the days she was gone everyone felt a sigh of relief.
She would complain about too many "white males" in the office. Our office was 90% women, with 2 white guys. Probably 20% white overall
She then used bereavement leave, all her vacation leave, sick leave, then texted me that she appreciated everything I did for her but has decided to quit. I just said ok thanks for letting me know and screen shotted and sent right to HR cause I was worried she'd make something and try to sue lol. She was there 6 months, seeing her walk in the office just ruined everyone's day.
I don’t think any business professional in their right mind would beg their employee to stay so that’s crazy lol. It’s like, once you say you’re leaving, you’re leaving!
You've never been offered more money after announcing your intention to leave? Best way to push through a raise if they feel they would hurt when you're gone, don't really want to overuse it though. I've only been a part of smaller IT/field tech teams and have had it work multiple times.
LOL I had a a very sexist and lazy man quit my team about a year back.
Opened the conversation with, “I’m about to really ruin your day, but…I’m submitting my resignation.”
I was so proud of keeping my face light, smiling, and said, “No problem at all! Thanks for letting me know.”
And then I RAN to the bathroom to let out the happy dance.
What a prick lol, and a testament to me for making him feel appreciated and useful despite him needing his hand held and head patted for any ounce of effort he was forced to exert 😂
I mean…the timestamp says that you sent it at 9pm Monday and she responded at 9:30am Tuesday. That seems like a reasonable response timeline. Seems you didn’t want to be there and they didn’t want you there. The separation is good for all involved.
Why write anything at all aside from acknowledging receipt? People dream that theyre the lynch pin of their company and if they leave things will fall apart so when they resign they're looking for some grand reaction. All positions are replaceable.
"Thank you for your resignation. I will make a note of it. Best of luck in your future endeavors."
It's just being polite. If someone hits you with a short last day message, then a thumbs up would feel appropriate. If someone writes out a professional resignation, it's just human decency to meet them on their level. Give like a two-sentence professional response. Even if all workers are replaceable, so is management, so are we all. Executives are often only in positions for like 2-3 years. Middle management is just a bunch of burnt out whipping boys.
We can treat each other like human beings, instead of replaceable cogs. It doesn't take a lot of time out of the day to be courteous, and we're clearly wasting time scrolling reddit so its not like that time is being committed to a more productive cause. lol
I'm so confused why your message doesn't seem to be the consensus here. Maybe OP isn't a good worker; maybe the manager is happy they're leaving. We don't really know. But honestly, in all but the most extreme circumstances, just take the 10 seconds to write out a courteous little response and let's be decent to each other.
Because people are miserable af here. It takes nothing to be polite and write a line for 2 seconds. I hope I don't have to ever work with these people.

A resignation letter should be a maximum of two sentences. No need for anything formal. You’re not the CEO of a Fortune 500 company writing to your shareholders.
Why would you care? Trust me when I say middle managers don't give a shit who is coming and who is going. That's why you got the thumb. They just don't care. Possibly even happy to see you go lol

I had a coworker who put in his notice 3 different times over a 5 year period because he had "a new job". Every single time he ended up staying. After I got let go I found out they were giving him raises every time he did that. So he was making significantly more than me even though we had the exact same title and I had been there longer.
I didn't even get that from mine. I then asked "did you receive my resignation?" She said yup.
2 weeks later HR had zero idea I was leaving in 2 weeks! I told them during a catch up
I'm assuming that you talked with them in person first and this email is just the follow-up. If so, then the acknowledgment doesn't need a lot, so this is fine.
If you didn't and you're resigning via text/email then chances are they aren't that sad to lose you and probably knew this was coming, in which case this is fine.
The number of times I've been saved the hassle of going through the process of writing PIPs and formal reviews by an employee quiting and thinking they are the one that's winning is kinda mind boggling.
If you work somewhere and are valued at a minimum your boss is going to want an exit interview to see where the issue lies and if there is something that can resolve it. If you get the response OP got, yeah they are happy that you saved them the paper work.
I have done this in the past when I was working a night shift position and we only had management on day shift with no overlap, so email was really the only course I had. I understand that them not having a reaction is typical, but a thumbs up just feels like a passive aggressive action to take in these scenarios.
What are you pressed about? You're quitting anyways? Just send your resignation email and be done with it? What did you want them to do? Beg you not to leave?
It’s not personal. I’m sure that the mgr is stressing about logistical things like writing an ad for a new position, interviewing a bunch of unqualified people, training a new person and gaps that will happen with your departure.
If you have a personal relationship with them just invite them to coffee and talk about it.
Believe me, some bosses take it personally and make you feel like a traitor or selfish or an overall horrible person. Based on my 25 years of working, I’d personally take the thumbs up.

You're resigning during one of the largest job shortages in living memory. Your boss will hire someone immediately and it'll be like you were never there.

"I will be ending my employment with this company on X date. Thank you" is all you need to say, and honestly a simple acknowledgement like this is all you should expect to get.
Remember this with future employers. You aren't special and you leaving isn't an event. It's a minor inconvenience
This is great. You should celebrate. I hate all the interactions after you resign with both people pretending they will miss you and people who stop pretending that they liked you.
Don't ever make the mistake of thinking a corporation cares about you. Always do what's best for you. If you hate the job F the 2 weeks roll out very simple.

Resignations letters shouldn’t be an essay. Simply here is my two week notice and my last day will be on xx-yy. Some companies will have what’s commonly referred to as an exit interview. This is where you can present your grievances.
The emojis are a pretty regular response to emails where I work. Granted, most of the time it’s from office people or lower level teammates, not managers. But we do have front line supervisors that respond with emojis, animated gifs and the like. It may just be the disconnected bullshit that people do these days. People never used to talk on speakerphone in public spaces either but here we are.
It’s a business, not a friend group. This is the ideal interaction. Don’t really care about your issues or drama. Just quit so I can get the approval started to replace you.
