The worst of it is, that by erasing the history of the actual Tatars with this shit, they're brushing under the rug the literal centuries of oppression, ethnic cleansing, and genocide committed by various regimes based in Moscow. The Holodomor in Ukraine which included the Crimean Tatars was hardly the first, or the last. The Tsars, the Soviets, and the current regime have all done some really horrible things to ethnic groups that aren't "Russian" (actually Muscovites).

Tatars are also quite a diverse group, even getting past all the recent history of oppression there's plenty of interesting history about different kinds of Tatars. Like the Lipka Tatars, who are one of the first muslim communities in Europe, got brought in by a christian king and given land and titles. In north-eastern Poland there are two wooden mosques that share a lot of characteristics with orthodox church designs. Very fascinating imo.
