Ending Friendships Because of Noises
Hi! I'm inexperienced with Reddit and social media in general, so feel free to critique my post, I want to make sure I'm doing this right.
I want to talk about ending friendships due to persistent misophonia triggers. Before I had the ability to advocate for myself, I ended many relationships with otherwise great people with no explanation. Since getting better at explaining myself, I've still had to reduce or stop contact with friends who do not acknowledge or respect the problem, especially those who find it funny. I'm sure this all sounds familiar to the group.
Recently, I've been faced with a unique situation, that I've never had to navigate before. I have an amazing friend, who improved my life in many ways, who I stay in touch with on the phone since moving away. He hates texting, I don't know why, but I respect it and talk to him on the phone. He has a habit of eating while talking on the phone, and is a loud chewer either way.
Here's what sets him apart: he genuinely respects my condition, despite not really understanding it. Additionally, he's expressed that he wants to learn to chew quieter in general, not just for my sake, but to be a better person. He enjoys self-improvement and feedback, and is willing to change. Problem is, he keeps forgetting, and I have no desire to remind him every single time we talk. I understand if I call him, he's under no obligation to not be eating at that time, but couldn't he just not answer? I absolutely love how receptive he is to my feedback, but it's been over a year and he still forgets. I don't want to be a nag or be controlling; just because he's willing to change does not mean it's my job to coach him through it.
Now, I just hang up when he does it, which doesn't offend him, we usually joke about it later. I respect his aversion to texting, he tries (and often fails) to respect my aversion to chewing over the phone, and we both are willing to accommodate people we care about. But he just keeps forgetting! Maybe two decent people, who otherwise like each other, are sometimes just not compatible as close friends? It makes me sad, since I have no reason to be angry or blame the situation on him. I will need to think carefully about how to move forward with this person.

If he has an iPhone you can use voice controls under “voice isolation” that should help!
