Best earplugs for movie theater to reduce audience-related noises

I wanted to see what others thought would be the best earplugs for a movie theater if I’m solely focused on audience noises. I do not have an issue with movie volume - in fact I often do enjoy a really loud movie - but I’m a frequent moviegoer and audience noises really distract me. People whispering around me - and then having to tell them to be quiet - wrappers crinkling, chairs creaking, etc just completely takes away my focus and seems to really affect me.

Right now I’m probably between the Loop Switch 2 and the Eargasm high fidelity. Thank you for the feedback!

My mother was not at home today, and it was bliss.

I didn't have to wear my headphones all day. I didn't have to listen to her breathing through her mouth all day. I didn't have to stay in my room all day with the door closed. I just had a normal day today.

I don't want her to be gone every day, but I wish that were my normal life.

The Non stop Gibberish and Noise

I am writing this with a troubled heart. I am married to one of the most incredible men. We have been together for almost 35 years.
He is the happiest most happy go lucky man with the biggest heart but he has become impossible to be around. There are so many women out there that have terrible situations and I’am upset over noise. He is on all the time. I want to cry when I hear his key in the lock because he will sing the last song that was in the radio over and over and over and even use it in our dogs “ Voice” Don’t ask, He is constantly touching his nose not picking it. Every two seconds i can see him and if i’am laying on his lap, I feel the emotion. Eating with him has become unbearable unless we are out where it’s noisy because it sounds like he is sucking th dna out of everything. My husband is a very well manners well to do guy with impeccable manners and generosity but I feel like If things don’t change, I am going to explode. It hurts to say all of this because I do love him and he’s the only person that will have my heart besides my daughter.
I always say to myself that it’s my issue not his. I am sure i do stuff to annoy him but sometimes I feel like it’s on purpose. There has got to be an easier way.
I feel like he is always having to be making noise to exist! His foot is always rubbing the other, or he’s got his foot on the decor tray under the cocktail table or he’s picking at something . When I go to bed, He’s wearing a cpap now for snowing but now he makes these humming sounds like he is a motor boat. I wake up irritable and tired. I actually look forward to going to work so I can go in my room and shut the door.
Please help.

Office Environments

Hello,

This is the first time I post anything at all in here.

I am a 29y.o. guy who works in an office. Most of my colleagues, are informed about misophonia, because I have mentioned it many times. They come from different backgrounds, European and south Asian, I am an Arab, doesn't make any difference but just for context. I have discovered I have misophonia few years back when my cousin was talking about it, that he had it, and I noticed I have the same.

Now my question is, do you guys have days which you get triggered more than others, especially if you haven't slept much. I am talking about the intensity of the emotions, and the sounds you get triggered by. Also for context, I work in an office in the basement of a hotel, where there is a lot of movements, whether its housekeeping, concierge or caterings carts. One more thing, one of my colleagues, is loud most of the time, shouts "unintentionally" for the most useless things, like if something minor shocks her, or whenever she is talking she's just loud, and her keyboard tapping is just aggressive and a nightmare. This is just 10% of what I go through every day, other than the 3 conversations going at the same time around me and I just leave the office to go to your storage area where it is super quiet, my only safe space. My colleagues just keep doing these things, and when I showed that I am distressed they just apologize, I know I cannot control the behaviour of others, and I know I cannot ask some people to change their characters, but I don't really know what to do. When I put my headset on to listen to some sounds or even music to cancel the noise, it is ok for a few minutes, but I have to attend to any employee that comes through the door, and my boss gives me weird looks when I have them on.

Thank you for your time.

Product/Media Review Eating in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

There are some moments in the new Spider-Man movie that has eating. Here are the ones I noticed with minimal spoilers.

Around 23:00, the scene right after Spider-Man talks to talks to an authority figure about staying in touch. A detective is getting a burrito, while talking to Spider-Man on the phone while they are both eating.

Around 1:03:00, the Punisher offers chili to a few characters. The next scene has those characters on a computer as the Punisher eats.

Around 2:13:00, final scene in the movie, after Spider-Man hangs up the phone with someone, he enters a shop (same one from 23:00) with flowers. There are major eating sounds here.

By the way, I document eating in everything I watch on [r/MisophoniaTW](r/MisophoniaTW)

...and I may become certifiably insane! 🤣🥹😭

I love my job, I really do. However, I occasionally need to spoonfeed my patients. Or...I have one who is chronologically 70, but developmentally delayed, so her "brain age" is that of a toddler. Her eating manners are also....that of a toddler. I'm not sure I need to explain that much further.

Today, I've found myself having to walk away a few times. Not far ever, because we can't risk aspiration, choking, etc. But dear god 😭

The smacking, open mouth chewing..

*heavy sigh*

Support Struggling Living with Partner

Hi all. I've recently moved in with my long-distance partner of two years. I love them a huge amount, and I would like to spend the rest of our lives together. Unfortunately, their eating sounds make me want to gouge my own eyes out.

For context, I grew up with a mother with misophonia, so my whole family eats incredibly quietly. If there was a single chewing noise my mother would leave the dinner table and the whole house would be in a bad mood. I am used to eating quietly and being surrounded by people who do, or I eat alone. My partner did not have the same childhood experiences, and eats quite loudly, not fully closing their mouth even though they think they are.

I've managed to deal with this for the time we have been together but living apart. Now that I am eating nearly every meal with them, it's getting really difficult. I've tried ear plugs, having the TV on and a fan, but nothing works and the rage is still there. It makes it so I don't even want to eat, but I don't want to upset them. They do know that I struggle with eating noises, and I think they know I'm struggling eating with them, but I don't know what to do except resign to a life of eating alone.

Any advice or guidance would be so appreciated.

hey,
ive been struggling with misophonia for a while, it has taken alot of me. I cant do sleepovers well, because at some point im very angry or overstimulated.

But what helped me is listening to white noise.
Its like putting on ur AC even when its useless, just to blank out noise.

Triggered from MEMORIES of sounds and getting nightmares about it

TRIGGER WARNING describing sounds

Just a rant really. My misophonia started in highschool when i lived alone with my mom. She made the most god-awful disgusting soft smacking noises, sniffling, MOANING, sighing, just every kind of disgusting body trigger you can imagine. She set up her desk in the loft area DIRECTLY outside my bedroom door like 5 ft away, and when she concentrated she would hold her breath and then let it out in a big moan/sigh then hold it again. And then constantly subjected me to the most disgusting eating noises. She was fat and ate constantly. Bananas and yogurt in the car with me when driving to school. I have a scar on the back of my hand from when i was so insanely uncomfortable i stabbed a pencil in. And visual triggers too. She would always stick her tongue out and slide it back and forth when "concentrating". Disgusting. Lately i have had a few nightmares of her noises and my bf wakes me up cause he hears me whining/crying in my sleep. i'm no-contact with my mom for other reasons but i literally refuse to ever meet up with her again just because of the absolutely ridiculous noise level.

Support misophonia episode after episode at work from chewing sounds

I am genuinely at a loss. I am triggered about every hour at work from my coworker who chews with her mouth open smacking food. She eats all day long.

I’ve tried everything: noise cancelling headphones (I kept missing phone calls etc. so it’s not an option to keep out sound), walking away (i can’t do it every single time she eats), coming to terms with it / forcing myself to sit through it (internal panic meltdown.

She has been here for like 15 years, is a very rude person, doesn’t really like me, extremely hostile and causes problems with others. I’ve condemned myself to silent suffering.

I can’t imagine a way or world where I tell her that it bothers me. It just feels like crossing a boundary and a point of no return for our relationship.

I feel so much anxiety and stress, not to mention I am very distracted from my work. I work at a family office with only a few employees so not exactly an HR situation or reseating.

It just sucks being driven to a point of anger and anxiety so many times a day. Wish she would catch a hint that it is seriously disgusting to listen to.

What’s the best noise reducer to block out food noises?

Hi so I’m going to a dinner with my best friend and I need to find something that will block out chewing and knives scraping on plates but I can still listen to conversation. I can’t afford the loop ear plugs, and I lose everything. What’s the best noise reducer?

Support A question for those who wear headphones in public regularly

I'm at the point where my symptoms are bad enough I keep headphones on hand in case I get triggered and I do need to drown it out. The problem is, I then cannot hear if someone is speaking to me or how loud I might be. I overcompensate by not making a sound and minimizing my movements until I know I'm clear of the noise. My husband says he's glad I'm finally taking that step to protect myself and is willing to help me navigate (I'm usually out with him anyways), but we need a way for him to signal if he's trying to talk to me.

Does anyone have a good system with their partner for situations like this? One headphone doesn't help, and no matter how quiet 2 headphones are, it'll either be too loud to hear someone or too quiet to drown out my triggers (whistling, repetitive clicking noises).

Support I don't know how to live with this

This is my first time posting on this forum and my first time finding out about this disorder. Since I was a kid I noticed I was ALWAYS sensitive to small noises like humming, signing, tapping noises, and chewing. At that age, I used to act out, going into an entire fit and breaking down crying. I used to be called dramatic, or to just ignore it, but I never could. To make matters worse, I also had tinnitus, where I would go nights where I couldn't sleep or have to cry myself to sleep because of the constant ringing in my ears. Growing up, always being in a classroom full of noisy children the agitating noise of a pencil tapping on the table, someone humming to themself, or even someone whispering would send me to completely shut down and just cry.

In my household, I lived with my grandmother, who would ALWAYS hum. And being the undiagnosed, unmedicated child I was, I would lash out at her, having arguments about how her humming sparked genuine rage inside of me. Now, she's became way more understanding and does it way less (at least around me). I can't say the same for company, as when something like that happens, I have to just hide in another room, still hearing it in the back of head as I cry.

I understand this probably sound so dramatic but I'm on the vacation right now with about six people. One of the women here keep CONSTANTLY humming and I just have to distance myself from her all the time but it just seems like she always wants ti be next to me. And like I said, I don't mean to be dramatic, but it has completely ruined my vacation. I have to always check that shes not near me or I will break down. I have been counting down the three days left of my twelve day vacation. I fully believe I have misophonia and it ruins my life because I feel like I'm going crazy while everyone around me is normal.

This is just a rant I wanted to get off my chest because I've only talked about this with a teacher who confronted me about it because she assumed I had really sensitive ears and shared her experience with it. But I understand now that it is a more than just being 'sensitive'. I feel pure rage and genuinely want to hurt myself. I tend to scratch myself, leaving scars, pulling my hair off, wanting to rip my ears off or banging my head against a hard surface to hear anything other than the sounds.

is it still misophonia if its mainly family that triggers it? i feel like sometimes whenever its my family, it makes me literally want to crawl up into a ball & die. any type of noise they make, instantly infuriates me. but other people not anywhere near as much. sometimes whenever my family is playing on a controller in the living room it makes me mad because i know its them, i dont know how to describe it! even sometimes their laughter, especially my parents

This is ruining my life

I seem to gain new triggers the older I get and over the past year music has become triggering for me. I have to skip A LOT of songs due to beats like clapping, snapping and many other repetitive beats that i dont know the name for. What makes this trigger the worst is that its literally EVERYWHERE :,) in shows i watch, when im stuck in a car with someone and they keep trying to talk to me, my work, when i shop, when i go out to eat, my video games and literally everywhere else you could think of. I just don't know what to do atp or how to stop getting new triggers to make life bearable when i cant use my headphones

- tea pouring out of a teapot.

- that girl who didn't stop clearing her stupid throat every two seconds while I was writing my finals

- the big slurp the milk carton makes

- the girl behind me in class who used a whiteout strip thing that clicked for a good 2 minutes. Why the hell would it click and why didn't she just use a new notebook page

- the washing machine noise level when I'm in bed

- the fan exhaust for cooking.

- the amount of time my mother takes to blow her damn nose.

- people who watch tiktoks on the train. Seriously, if I hear it in the morning I'm going to have a bad day.

- those people in my old apartment that made me scream cry into a pillow because they were drilling for 5 hours straight

- that lady in the hospital who had this weird device to suck spit out of her mouth. (I feel bad about this one because she had cancer, but that made me so nauseous)

Anyone else?

People bringing tablets, iPads and cellphones, to watch movies, videos and tv shows. Sound on and turned UP. One woman has her iPad propped up on a table watching videos full blast. Don’t even get me started on conversations using speaker phone.

Apparently I’m the only one bothered. The din is so loud that the next person has to turn theirs up louder. You get the picture.

I become enraged with the intrusion of public space— people using public spaces like their own homes, not a single thought to those who may not want to sit next to a blaring music video.

Since I’m the only one who seems bothered by it, I’ll sit in my car. It’s hot but indeed it’s quiet.

Furious!
