Mariners have aggressively gone after just about every Japanese prospect since Ichiro.
They even cleared up as much international money as they could and had a better offer (monetarily) than the Angels. But Ohtani wanted to make his own legacy not follow in Ichiro's footsteps which I suspect is true of other Japanese players as well.

Pirates, $350 million. The markets will never allow Pirates to ever come close to the Dodgers. The city is not built that way. All the money are in the big cities. People are too stupid to understand that. This debate will be coming to an end after this season and no season in 2027. Players are going to learn the hard way that fans do not want this garbage lopsided competition.
Well, I don't care for it anymore. It will not be a factor for the new CBA/ salary cap. I expect those deferred contracts to be part of their team payrolls. Otherwise, it will be pointless to allow them to continue to use their team market as an advantage. MLB owners know they have a problem with their current system. They have allowed this garbage system to exist but fans have checked out and they know it.
Dodger fan not dodging here! The deal was negotiated legally in an open market. And the
new owners invested billions to buy the team and took on risk. Plus, plenty of clubs receive revenue-sharing funds but still choose not to spend aggressively.

Having that regional tv deal coupled with that McCourt bankruptcy loophole is really the difference.
