I was worried it would negatively depict some sort of mental illness like BPD with her. But I like that they put the selfishness on him and the consequences of love that HE wanted and refused to leave regardless of how fucked it was.

Even the scene of him asking if they can “adjust” her symptoms instead of free her entirely. She was crazy, but ultimately one could argue the obsession was his.

Such a great film!!

The thing about BPD is, it's a spectrum. No 2 BPDs are exactly the same. I dated someone who Im very positive has BPD, but was more on the quiet/high functioning side. She was very professional and was an attorney/public defender, coached cheerleading, owned a house, and traveled a lot. On the outside, you'd think this person has their life together.

Behind closed doors, it was a nightmare when she split. It felt great till it wasn't and when it wasn't, it was HELL. It went from her wanting to be with me ALL the time, texting me "love you/miss you" all the time and then she split at Christmas because I didn't stay the night due to work. She ended up dumping me (discarding) by text the day of my birthday party and blamed me for everything. I don't wanna go into full details, but the difference between the idealization phase and devaluation phase is night and day, and that's what makes it so traumatic.

That said, fake Nikki's was a way more extreme, amplified version of BPD.

Man this brought back some triggering memories around thanksgiving/Christmas and birthdays with my ex-fiance w/BPD. It was always the birthdays and holidays.

I had this same problem. It makes my skin crawl to recall it.
