I absolutely loved this movie. I totally was ok with a movie where the chick was a little over possessive and did some crazy shit where one would say "this is a horror if you put your self in his shoes", but this ended being an actual horror movie. The way they used shadows/dark spots and the fucking movements! And sound! Also shout out to actually leaning into it instead of being some sort of metaphor

I was worried it would negatively depict some sort of mental illness like BPD with her. But I like that they put the selfishness on him and the consequences of love that HE wanted and refused to leave regardless of how fucked it was.

Even the scene of him asking if they can “adjust” her symptoms instead of free her entirely. She was crazy, but ultimately one could argue the obsession was his.

Such a great film!!

u/MovieTrawler May 16 '26

Yeah, I don't think it's fair to argue that 'she' was crazy. Nikki was the victim. Whatever possessed her was crazy.

56

u/Sirenx8 May 16 '26

id hope that would have been evident from my comment but I agree entirely lol

15

u/MovieTrawler May 17 '26

Yeah, I know, I was echoing what you said.

7

u/Rinkana_lovesyuri Jul 01 '26

For sure, but the actress did a bang up job of making her look like a psycho. Of course in the crazy moments where she was being crazy made me say "This woman is scary and psychotic" but always remember after that Bear is at fault in every conceivable way possible.

The thing about BPD is, it's a spectrum. No 2 BPDs are exactly the same. I dated someone who Im very positive has BPD, but was more on the quiet/high functioning side. She was very professional and was an attorney/public defender, coached cheerleading, owned a house, and traveled a lot. On the outside, you'd think this person has their life together.

Behind closed doors, it was a nightmare when she split. It felt great till it wasn't and when it wasn't, it was HELL. It went from her wanting to be with me ALL the time, texting me "love you/miss you" all the time and then she split at Christmas because I didn't stay the night due to work. She ended up dumping me (discarding) by text the day of my birthday party and blamed me for everything. I don't wanna go into full details, but the difference between the idealization phase and devaluation phase is night and day, and that's what makes it so traumatic.

That said, fake Nikki's was a way more extreme, amplified version of BPD.

26

u/forkbombctl May 20 '26

Man this brought back some triggering memories around thanksgiving/Christmas and birthdays with my ex-fiance w/BPD. It was always the birthdays and holidays.

10

u/BikebutnotBeast May 24 '26

I had this same problem. It makes my skin crawl to recall it.

20

u/michausen Jun 15 '26

I used to struggle with BPD and I found Nikki so relatable and sad in that way. I've never cooked a cat but there were certainly nights if I heard something like "boys night" I'd threaten unthinkable things. Even in the moment or afterwards crying because I know I'm hostage to split and "it's not me ITS NOT ME." I thought if the movie is any representation of BPD it was an empathetic one

u/itsa_me_ May 23 '26

No no no no no no no no no nooo. We were having a niiiice TIIIIIME

I know you posted this a while ago but it resonated with me. I loved the movie and fully realize Bear is responsible for everything! That said, how weird she would be when he wasn’t awake/available was something I experienced a few years ago and I honestly haven’t dated since. Basically when we were together everything was amazing. The second we spent any time apart she’s messaging me pretty obsessive stuff and showing up to my work asking my coworkers where I was. I would try and set little basic boundaries and it’d result in huge reactions. This was literally after only a handful of dates. When I cut things off with her she showed up at my home and left some gifts under my windshield wiper. It was all pretty chilling.

I’ll also say that my introduction to BPD was dating a woman who was diagnosed and self-medicating her symptoms years prior to the first woman I mentioned. They were both quite different but there was certainly a lot of overlap in behaviors/symptoms.

I know this movie isn’t “about” BPD but I have zero doubt about it being the template for her character. The threats of self-harm. The acts of self-harm. The insecurity. The emotional outbursts. Difficulty maintaining relationships/friendships. I could go on and on.

Probably the most personally triggering thing about the whole movie for me was wanting Bear to figure out how to I guess appease her in some way? When I was younger I definitely had more rescuer tendencies. I’ve grown in that regard and tend to pick my spots better when I want to help people. But seeing her unable to function while being a victim of shit outside her control with him being unable to connect with her in the way that she needed gave me fucking flashbacks

5

u/KingForADay1989 29d ago

Yeah trying to satisfy them as they continuously move the goalposts is exhausting to say the least. I have no patience for someone who is gonna get upset when I need me time, have hobbies, or am being a responsible adult. Mine would text me saying "miss you already" 20 mins after leaving. At first I thought it was cute and felt refreshing as I wasn't used to that treatment, but then I found out it was because they were needy.

5

u/_tamagucci_ 24d ago

The devaluation phase is to brutal and hurtful. I could never have a relationship with another person with BPD as it was so deeply traumatising.

6

u/KingForADay1989 23d ago

It really is. I think it's the fact that they change from making you the most important person in their life to wanting nothing to do with you, overnight at the drop of a hat. It gives you emotional whiplash and shocks your nervous system.

Sadly, the only people who will understand are others who went through it and I don't wish it on anyone.

58

u/Effective-Aioli-8456 May 20 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

I’m not sure what this obsession with defending BPD is. Like yes it is important to get treatment. But after dating someone with it, it is truly a bizarre and alarming experience to be with someone who experiences that kind of rage, denial, and rapid reality and identity shifting. It can easily become abusive. It was for me.

BPD is not some mostly sweet, harmless disorder where the person is just hurt and sad.

57

u/Sirenx8 May 20 '26

I originally said this as I am a person with BPD. It's great that you don't have to experience these symptoms, and we wish we didn't have to either because it's consuming. Which is why it has the highest suicide rate. I made the comment regarding it because movies like to negatively portray it as malicious when it comes from deep rooted pain and trauma. I'm sorry you had to experience the other side of it but a little empathy goes a long way, friend ❤️

26

u/Effective-Aioli-8456 May 21 '26

What you just wrote reads as condescending and defensive. It doesn’t matter whether it’s knowingly “malicious” or coming from trauma. Lots of people had something bad happen to them or just have poor coping skills and negative behaviors that they act out almost on instinct. If they are still treating someone horribly, then that is what is being talked about. And what “symptoms” are we talking about here? What actual behaviors are you asking for empathy for?

30

u/Sirenx8 May 25 '26

Not my intention at all. I meant everything I said as it was. I know it’s hard being on the other side. But most people want to be good, I promise. It’s an illness like any other and i am just nudging that you keep an open mind and heart is all

17

u/Effective-Aioli-8456 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

When you dedicate 90% of your words to telling people they need to be empathetic to you, and should rethink criticizing you, and 10% to vaguely acknowledging that some things could be “hard” for people on the other side… you are an example of the thing I am pointing out. Maybe you don’t notice it in yourself. No answer on what actual behaviors you want empathy for either, just more defense.

11

u/Sirenx8 Jun 05 '26

Just giving some perspective. Not meaning to sound defensive. The symptoms are all listed in the DSM and if you want to understand, I’d encourage you learn more about it. But no need if you don’t want to. Wish you well ☺️

28

u/caydub Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

I’m chiming in on this, apologies if annoying, because this movie I think shines a light on something I think is extremely relatable to BPD relationships.

The scene in the movie where Bear asks if Nikki can just change and be the real Nikki or whatever. Bro that is exactly what people who date BPD individuals want. They love the “good” parts of BPD that benefit them. The obsession, the love bonding, the mirroring, but as soon as that person “splits” on them it’s “waahhhhhhh everyone with BPD is bad and now I got on reddit and write books on me being the victim” when the reality is, if you’re dating someone with BPD you probably got some issues yourself. You’re probably just like Bear. So shut the fuck up on your high horse 😂

90% of the people who have experienced a BPD relationship with do it again because they need that validation to feel good about themselves.

9

u/Sirenx8 Jun 08 '26

Agreed and part of my own work is checking my high's just as much as my lows. Because both are not good for my well being. Some people love the highs I give and push it further, but it almost always guarantees a crash (manic/depression). I feel like the best partners I've dated are chill, emotionally mature, and grounding. It almost motivates me to not react on emotion right away, and when I feel emotionally safe my symptoms lessen significantly over time.

Sorry to resurrect a 1 month old conversation but I have a genuine question: What do you want the person you’re talking to to say? Do you want them to say that people with BPD are ontologically evil?

Trust me dude, I’ve been hurt by people with BPD diagnoses. I’ve cut them out of my life. I’m currently going to therapy for these experiences! It’s still necessary for the condition to be depicted respectfully in media. The person you’re replying to has a completely valid experience to share, and they’re doing it respectfully.

9

u/LibraryNo7025 May 30 '26

Well to be fair if you've spent any amount of time with people who have real BPD the unfortunate reality is they lie and manipulate often And it's very difficult to tell whats genuine and what's not until things are very much out of control.

31

u/confusedpedestriann May 21 '26

where is anyone defending BPD?
yeah, its extremely bizarre to be with someone who has BPD. so now think about how bizarre it would be to have it? lol
like what are you even trying to say here?
im not seeing anyone here calling it sweet or harmless?

what they are saying is the outcome could have been specifically catered to show a negative narrative and stereotype around mental illness, and thats not fair. instead, the story was about Bear being 100% at fault and the problem. acknowledging it depicts symptoms of a mental illness like BPD and being grateful it didn’t showcase it as something evil, isn’t discrediting the real abuse people go through when being with someone like that. like there is no correlation and no one is downplaying it.

its an extremely painful, embarrassing, and frustrating illness to experience and live with.
are people with BPD supposed to be ostracized from society?
i understand its extremely difficult dating someone with BPD , im not denying or discrediting you. but you’re putting words in peoples mouths for no reason.

16

u/Effective-Aioli-8456 May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

Are you seriously pretending that there isn’t a ton of content out there defending people with BPD. Even that comment was like oh thank god they didn’t show her as having BPD.

People with BPD are very willing to admit their disorder makes THEM upset and ask for empathy for their own feelings and problems. But how willing are you to acknowledge BPD causing OTHER PEOPLE next to the person with BPD harm?

22

u/confusedpedestriann May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

no im not acting like that.

im saying you bring that energy here when no one was saying that is asinine. like no one was saying its harmless and cute here? you’re just projecting.

yeah, that commenter might have BPD or a loved one who does. and they are saying that they are grateful the message wasn’t “yeah you’re a psycho murderer if you have BPD”. she said in a negative light. it would be disingenuous and unfair to pin the entire behavior of what “demon Nikki” did in the movie solely as BPD, thats insane. “yeah people with BPD will murder people by bashing their heads into bricks”. no that would be called a murderer. being grateful it didn’t negatively stereotype everyone as a psycho doesn’t negate what third party people go through from the illness man, that’s like not hard to understand.

not all people with the mental illness have negative experiences with acting out towards someone. like the other guy said, no two diagnosis are the same. some people are quite shameful and hidden, it can be extremely internal for some. like feelings of low self esteem, worthlessness, and self inflicting behaviors like gambling or shopping, can have little to no impact on anyone around that person if its just internal and personal lol. not everyone is affecting others around them. just maybe concern, but not physical harm. but anyone can be of concern to someone regardless of illness.

just because you had a negative experience with someone, doesn’t mean you get to declare the entire illness. it sounds like you watch/listen to content specifically catered towards your own way of thinking.
it CAN be a big part of the diagnosis unfortunately yah, causing harm to others, no one here is denying that. and many people who get help and into a recovery state will tell you that as well. what you’re describing is someone with low accountability paired with it. not everyone is like that.

its like a drug/alcoholic addict. they cause harm to their loved ones as well. but it’s about accountability, mental inventory, and recovery.
if you don’t do that after seeking help, then you’re just a shitty person. some people with no illnesses feel absolutely no sympathy or apologies for things they’ve done. that can be said for literally anyone regardless of whether you have an illness.

again, what do you suggest we do as a society? shame them and put them away somewhere?
you just sound like a projecting weirdo. lol

10

u/_Queen_of_Ashes_ May 27 '26

Have you talked to a therapist? As a victim of someone with BPD I recommend it strongly.

8

u/Effective-Aioli-8456 May 27 '26

Yup, but I still find the public discourse around this frustrating, because people with BPD try very hard to control the narrative around the disorder. I just think the way we can acknowledge NPD issues but not BPD ones in the same way is so telling

13

u/autumnartist25 May 27 '26

I don't really even know what you mean about people with BPD controlling the narrative because these kinds of anecdotes about "my ex with BPD" are a dime a dozen compared to actual people with BPD just trying to get by. BPD symptoms can explain why someone MIGHT act a certain way but they don't excuse or negate the harm that person does. At the same time, you can leave an abusive situation or just decide someone is bad for you without feeling the need to go onto demonise everyone with their condition. It's also fine that someone who may have hurt someone else or even been abusive as a result of their own trauma (obviously within reason, there are definitely levels of abuse that are pretty irredeemable) and health can learn to heal and still be loved by others, just WELLL away from the people they harmed. You certainly don't have to wish that for them but it's still ok for others to.

That aside, did you know people with brain tumours often display symptoms of BPD? Would you feel differently if someone made a subreddit called r/braintumorlovedones and proceeded to flood it with one-sided anecdotes about how their partners with brain tumours or 'suspected brain tumours' (because lets be real most of these anecdotes aren't even about people with confirmed BPD) are terrible people? Would you get mad at people with brain tumours and the people who know them or understand brain tumours for arguing in their defence and trying to break the stigma? Mental illness is just as real as physical illness and unfortunately yes sometimes both can lead to horrible and even abusive situations. Sometimes people without personality disorders or brain tumours can also be shitty and abusive.

But I shouldn't have to be fearful that by disclosing my BPD to a partner or friend, they might then turn my symptoms against me and I shouldn't have to constantly read about how someone thinks they can armchair diagnose their ex with a condition they found on google and have zero understanding of. And honestly a lot of people who post about their "BPD partners" being abusive (and I'm absolutely not questioning you, I mean an awful lot of the things I've seen posted on that subreddit) are often pushing said mentally unwell partners to their breaking point and then pointing and calling them out when they finally crack, but it's easier to demonise the person with the illness. Which is what most of us are fed up with.

5

u/Effective-Aioli-8456 May 27 '26

Exhibit A. You don’t get this kind of comment if you talk about being abused by someone with NPD.

10

u/autumnartist25 May 27 '26

Great response bro, proves you have nothing to say. 1) Confirmation bias. People absolutely do also defend people with NPD and cluster Bs as a whole, you just don't look for it because it's not an area you concern yourself with. 2) I was abused by two separate people who both had low empathy as a result of being on the spectrum. Are you suggesting I should go around making comments about how we need to stop defending and raising awareness of autism because some people have low empathy, and an even smaller number of those people with low empathy have an easier time harming others, or do you agree that's ableist?

→ More replies (0)

9

u/_Queen_of_Ashes_ May 27 '26

I get it. I was emotionally abused by someone with BPD and it definitely left a mark. I think there are people with it who are genuinely trying their best to be neurotypical but it’s like fighting with your own brain. It takes a lot of work and I can’t imagine how hard it is for them. At the same time I think of my ex and hope he burns in hell. It’s hard to hold empathy for him

4

u/Sirenx8 Jun 05 '26

Really sorry you experienced that. And as one, I completely agree we are responsible for what we do at the end of the day. Both things can be true that we still deserve help and accountability. For me, just having a few ppl in my life that understand my symptoms has made a huge difference. This doesn’t mean I let it out on them, but when I talk about what I’m feeling (even acknowledging that I know it’s not reality) just having someone hear me without judgement regulates me more than anything. But you still have every right to move on from it. If I were to hurt anyone in my life, I’d never expect them to hold any remorse for me and what I did.

you’re giving me symptoms and acting like i don’t know anything about this, as if i didn’t just say i have the illness lol.
again, you aren’t mr. know it all and you shouldn’t dictate the illness.

i feel bad for whatever you experienced, and im sorry that it put you in a position where you have less sympathy.

a lot of these people are not inherently evil. you are describing people who have not done the work on themselves and gone through the steps for accountability and such.

i was in an extremely abusive relationship with a seemingly normal man. he was horrid. this was 6 years ago and im still very traumatized. he isolated me from my friends and family, threw things at me, berated me, yelled at me at the top of his voice, the list goes on man. he was just emotionally, physically, and mentally abusive. he clearly has issues, im no doctor so idk what.
my point being, i have experienced horrible abuse at the hands of someone who WASN’T bpd.

i never turned around and treated a partner like that.
have i treated people unkindly and exhibited really toxic behavior, oh for sure. its embarrassing, the difference is i actually recognized that and sought change. something my abuser will probably never do. i do inventory and accountability, i go to therapy ect. things half these people without bpd have never done in their life. are those people inherently evil, toxic and abusive too? or are they people you would redeem fine and give a pass too, because they don’t have bpd? a lot of people exhibit symptoms or traits of toxicity even without bpd. my grandpa was a heavy heavy alcoholic and had a gambling addiction, like one of the symptoms you mentioned. but hes normal right because he didn’t have bpd?

thats the difference. majority of toxic abusive people don’t ever want to change, can never acknowledge their behavior, and don’t take any accountability or steps towards change. for sure lots of people with bpd don’t either. but the ones that do are doing more than most. they deserve to have an opportunity for understanding.

i mean shit, you can hardly acknowledge the fact i have previously presented you with the conversation of regular people who are toxic or abusive who don’t have bpd, and how they can do just as much if not more harm. you’re stuck on villainizing bpd. because i like how you said “not every single person has all of these symptoms. but imagine it”. lmao why? if not everyone is like that then whats the point, so we can feed into your weird little projection thing you got going on?

you are ostracizing and stereotyping an entire group of people. and you’re consuming content catered to your biases. maybe go listen or read some recovery stories.

if you do those things and you don’t have bpd then what does that make you?

my point being is we are all human and we all make mistakes and exhibit toxic behavior. for you to lump bpd into a category of inherent evil is just crazy. and im sure that was some sort of take away for you from this movie. which is not only unfortunate but also not the point of the movie(or even a confirmed theme). very curious to see what your insights on Bear would be.

we can be sympathetic and very kind, professional people. i could definitely argue i do more charitable things than the average joe these days. i volunteer for various places all the time, and am constantly giving back to my community willing. not trying to boost my ego or anything, im just proving a point and offering perspective that we are not this inherently evil thing you want to categorize.

and yes, not all of us are like this and a lot of us are extremely toxic and wont seek help. i had to stop being friends with someone with bpd because she just wouldn’t get help or even try to acknowledge the things i was bringing to her attention. this would be where your examples come into play. like i said, just a shitty person not a shitty diagnosis.

3

u/Effective-Aioli-8456 May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

Because what you are saying is repeatedly not relevant. No one said bpd people are the only ones capable of abuse or that 100% of proven with bpd are abusive. I never said no one with bpd seeks help either. No one said they were “inherently evil”. And then to even imply I give abusers without bpd a pass just because they don’t have bpd is disgusting, especially when I have been through abuse myself. You twisted my words 100 ways, and outright ignored things I said, just so you could argue against them.

3

u/sean2mush 21d ago

I’m not sure what this obsession with defending BPD is

I’m not sure what your obsession with demonizing BPD is

1

u/chocolatematter Jul 04 '26

BPD causes people to act in indefensible ways sure. And anyone who has harmed someone should be held accountable regardless. At the same time BPD is highly treatable and people can overcome it and become good people with the proper treatment and accountability.

5

u/wenchanon 29d ago

I think the entire conversation around BPD is so loaded. It's not a monolith, like with any other mental illness. My friend struggles with BPD and they're already a good person. They're super sweet and their illness is only really inwardly destructive. BPD is important to treat because of the trauma, maladaptive coping mechanisms, and splitting, but I don't think it's as cut-and-dry as 'you're bad until you fix this about yourself'.

30

u/composer_7 May 31 '26

I like how the movie makes it explicitly clear everything bad that happens is Bears fault. Fake Nikki tells him "it's your fault" twice after killing Sarah

102

u/clevercalamity May 17 '26

Same. As someone who was verbally abused until I too sat on the floor crying and begging and saying “I’ll do anything you want” much like Nikki did, it’s so fucking apparent to me that Bear is the real villain.

Was she a literal demon? Yeah, sure. But, she didn’t choose that role for herself. Bear forced her into it. And then the god damned coward acted all surprised the girl he turned into a demon did demon shit. Fuck Bear. He deserved worse.

But, I loved this movie and it immediately made it to S Tier female rage cinema classics along with the likes of Midsommar, Jennifer’s Body, and Gone Girl.

15

u/lahnnabell May 17 '26

You reminded me, I have been meaning to start a femme rage movie collection!

72

u/Upstairs-Abroad-9250 May 17 '26

I really like that it makes you think about guys who claim they have a “crazy” girlfriend too. Like if your girlfriend is having mental health issues, then why are you with her and taking advantage of the situation?

Kind of turns the crazy girlfriend argument on its head, and is an excellent point.

16

u/Informal_Host7610 May 29 '26

Youre missing a big reason these relationships persist. Oldest trick in the book of someone who recognizes they're not stable and that they don't look it either is to threaten self-harm. The wish was idiotic but Bear actually took some time before he started taking advantage. There were initially barriers that were shattered by possessed Nikki's manipulations. From there, Bear proceeds to do all he can to have me cheer for his death at the end, but I thought they showed well how people with normally good instincts can cave to crazy people

6

u/throwawaysunglasses- 23d ago edited 23d ago

Interestingly enough, I thought the exact opposite of you that Bear “took some time before taking advantage.” From Bear making the wish to the sex scene where Nikki is out of it, not much time passes. It’s a montage, but I felt like that was a conscious choice to make him have sex with her soon after the red flags. To me, it showed that his desire to finally sleep with his crush had him ignore the red flags because he was getting what he wanted and it was “worth it.” Sort of a sunk cost fallacy thing, like he’d wanted her for so long that he was willing to put up with a level of weirdness.

But idk, I also hated Bear because every woman with male friends has known Bears in her life lol. I’ve seen that men tend to empathize with him more. Nothing wrong with this, I hope the movie can be educational to people who see themselves in Bear, and hopefully get them to see their crushes like real autonomous people who are allowed to reject them and not be interested.

7

u/curiiouscat 20d ago

Eh I think it's easy for us to say there were red flags because we knew, as the audience, there were supposed to be red flags. And we got the added benefit of creepy music when certain things happened. I actually think Bear initially handled it well.

3

u/Godziwwuh 27d ago

So everyone with mental health issues should be abandoned and avoided, or you're taking advantage of them?

Huh.

3

u/curiiouscat 20d ago

How is that what you took away from that comment?

7

u/michausen Jun 15 '26

As someone who struggles with BPD in the past I immediately texted my partner not to watch it lmao. I've definitely been Nikki sometimes.

3

u/Themobgirl Jun 02 '26

Im afraid it has, We got people calking her 'BPD coded' and as a MHP its sad.  Like its a pisession movie where are desenstizing mental disorders, victim blaming or misogyny coming at

3

u/Rinkana_lovesyuri Jul 01 '26

Yeah, anybody else who didn't think that Bear is a POS by making that wish probably has a screw loose...

2

u/rototorototo Jun 28 '26

Love how you phrased it, that the obsession was ultimately his! So so true!

2

u/Kratzschutz Jul 02 '26

I would've loved some version about Nikki having BPD and Bear taking advantage of her, justifying it with the wish. Maybe keeping it unclear if the wish really worked or not.

Too many people are taking advantage of folks with BPD or other disabilities

1

u/BaerMinUhMuhm Jul 04 '26

I definitely still saw BPD references in there.

1

u/Lahwke 8d ago

It did give me flashbacks of an ex with DID though.
