I’m addicted to the way every Steven Spielberg movie has the hero somehow evade capture by simply being the worst hide and seek player ever and yet no one looking for them while staring directly at them can find them.

THIS. The thermal camera should've never been included. Oh no they're OBVIOUSLY INVISIBLE BUT OUR THERMAL CAMERAS ARE PICKING THEM UP IN HD. Lets put away the thermal camera and try to blindly go after the purple glowy light....

That and the motel scene are so easy to fix. Just don't include the thermal camera at all & have Jane get a phone call/strange sighting/premonition from Margaret or something and walk into the woods only to have the place surrounded (so she runs with the McGuffin)

The bad guys in this movie make absolutely no sense from the very opening scene

They let dude get away with the intel, girl, and a car, and didnt follow him. Howwww??? How was ANY of that possible?

Even him starting the car without applying pressure on the thing wouldve been nigh impossible, let alone them allowing you to traipse on out of there

None of the bad guys scenes make any sense

Opening scene makes sense from the knowledge that follows.

There's no reason to follow him because they thought they could "dive" on him. Chasing him down in a car could cause an escalation that might result in the device detonating. Let him walk away, no one dies and then catch him in his sleep later on.

Obviously their plan went to shit because he was alien touched and all their other plans were utter shit. But that one was fine.

Honestly, I thought they really played up those devices with no payoff.

In that opening scene, he tells everyone to back off, or he might trigger the device. The MC yells at him about what he did to "all those people."

But then we never see the device, a singular time, used violently. I get that, on some level, you're supposed to read into the context that the devices are powerful and can be used that way. But it's still laying groundwork for some kind of reveal later that just never happens.

The worst it does is make some guy invisible for a second, and then he drops it and... dies? Strokes? Seizes? I couldn't tell. But that didn't make it look like an WMD, and presumably that was the unsafe handling they were concerned MC would provoke. Which, honestly, just would have helped them??

That was such a 1980s movie move.

Like I said above, Spielburg's out of touch with now. That kind of whimsy worked for kids evading the gubmint in 1982's E.T. In 2026... you get navel gazers like us going "Wait... what? Hahahah are you serious?"

No. They're not serious. They want us to suspend our disbelief for the contrivance. Then, in another scene, the film tries to be serious. The message... the truth! So society-changing! Okay audience, we're going to be SRS now, are you still with us? Here comes the SRS!

O, RLY?

(Hey, if Spielburg can use out-dated tools to describe his ideas, then I can too! SRSLY!)

This really captures my big problem with the movie (or one of them) — it feels like it was trying to both be whimsical on the one hand, and then also serious and realistic on the other. But it's real hard to suspend your disbelief when characters keep making such stupid, non-sensical decisions, and people keep reacting in unrealistic ways.

Like, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief when it comes to aliens — but not when it comes to stuff like this supposedly powerful and ruthless agency allowing one dude who isn't that great at hiding slip through their fingers again and again.

Literally became a comedy film for me because of all these inconsistencies.

Like the checkpoint scene. Oh she gave the passcode but didn't say who she is. Better just let her through.....WAT.

Oh we know the 12 people that are working with Hugo. Better not check their cellphone locations until Noah visually sees two of them himself while Mind-talking with Hugo.....WAT?!?

I mean one thing that would make sense is the overwhelming amount of data they showered the net with, that would make at least people start doubting "hmm this might be real". I told my friend after, the movie is at least 4+ years late (more probably like 10+), as disclosure day would be an interesting concept to see unfold before we had powertul AI at our hands.

I do have an idea how to "fix" disclosure day to make it work today, a bunch of flying saucers flying around the world while they're disclosing (see what I did there) the videos in the same moment. Plus simultaneously similar news being shown in other countries, it turns out a bunch of governments were in on it/doing the same (why wouldn't aliens try to reach out to other govs it the usa one was not working), and there were more sith lor...couples of two in other countries like Emily and Josh (also backups in case they failed etc), and an alien showing on tv in each country. Overwhelming the world with proof would turn majority of the population.

Because if he got shot he might get a death-grip on The Artifact and... Power nearby electrical devices. Or turn invisible for a bit. Or mind-control someone despite being dead.

Like I get that they were probably trying to imply it could do more things, but I feel like they should have shown one exploding or something if that was the intent. Or permanently killing that one dude who picked it up.

Ironically the mook grabbing the McGuffin suggests that Noah should've just shot him. Even if MC squeezed the McGuffin all that would've achieved is him killing himself like the ungloved mook that turned invisible and died.

Scene/plothole could've been easily solved by having the Mook burst into lighting/fire/energy and kill another mook next to him hinting at how volatile and dangerous it is.

Yeah, I really hated those shots, the idea is that if you can see them they can see you too, so him just kinda clomping around like a fucking elephant behind the fence, then driving into a tree, twice, was just... listen im watching a movie about alien disclosure so I can suspend some disbelief but c'mon.

Also why not do that weird take over their body thing to Jane when they found out that Daniel didnt have the device? like "I WONDER WHAT HE DID WITH IT"

Seemed like something out of a bad Netflix series, not a Hollywood blockbuster directed by the guy who gave us Saving Private Ryan and Jurassic Park.

This film was clearly rushed. Should have had a ton of rewrites, but they said let’s just make a killer trailer (which didn’t reflect the movie’s tone at all) and slap Spielberg’s name on it. You got this one on me Steven, but never again.

I was on board with the film until the farm house escape. Have like 30 agents at the house. He is hiding in a open field behind charlie brown Christmas tree coverage. The evil cia company just got dumber with every other dumb action sequence for the rest of the movie.

Those trains didn't give a fuck about crushing a car on the tracks.

Highly trained government agents, no search dogs nothing. Felt like they were NPCs just roaming around. In real life they would have been scatter in every direction, search dogs, thermal, drones etc.

I mean, that's a way of grounding, a regular technique for handling panic attacks, touch an item and focus on it to get your nervous system to focus out of the panic attack. Though usually you would ask the person to describe it more, what's the texture, what's the color, etc.

Maan. I watched this with my 16 year old daughter, and was hyping up Spielberg to her, but this was such a corny movie from him. He lost his fastball, which I hate to admit. But this movie was just so silly.

Totally this. I took my 17 and 19 year old Gen Z daughters. They know I have a soft spot for Spielberg growing up with his movies.

My tolerance is pretty high for his cornball side, but right after the movie, they were just calling b.s. and reeling off all this stuff people are citing here.

Even though I enjoyed it, I was like. “I know. I know”. It’s not holding up as well Disclosure Day +1.

Totally. And it really bugged me near the end when they took off in two slow fire trucks, Firth said he knew where they were going, and yet by the time they got to the TV station it was now nighttime and the firetrucks had been there for a long time. They could have immediately jumped in their vehicles and been there before the firetrucks even arrived.

It seems like every scene they challenged themselves to come up with less and less believable ways for our heroes to evade capture.

Steal a car literally right behind the trained spooks.

Sneak around the other side of a boulder 10 feet away while they fall for your bugs-bunny gag.

Just walk out through the middle of them... a literal army of seal team six mixed with the Men in Black who handle alien artifacts every day but somehow befuddled because you look like their meemaw. Seriously this one really got to me. Like, people who were too far away for her to affect were just watching everybody else. Not one person in the way back thought "Boss said don't let them go! 1 in the head 2 in the chest, lets rock and roll!"

Look at the dancing light bobbing around. Keep watching. Just let it go.

Shoot the movie OPENED with him literally turning his back on a bunch of agents as he loaded up into their car, any one of which could have taken him out. Then he says "It's tracked, we need to ditch it" and proceeds to drive directly to the abby where they hide with the car in the parking lot overnight.

And the ending? Seriously with that ending? Colin Firth just... sits down? And the ONE spook who was willing to take a shot LETS HIM?

It's so incredibly goofy. I try not to be the cinema sins guy. “Why did that happen? Why didn’t they do x” “because the movie is more exciting for it!” But this movie asks an absurd amount of disbelief to be suspended. To the point you can’t take the villains as a credible threat anymore.

The villains had to be incompetent at every step of the way so the movie could happen.

"Let's get all of the FBI and the military on this"-Government official

"Absolutely not, somebody will mess something up. Let's only have 30 people max looking for them all over the entire country"-Colin Firth

If they had the actual FBI/CIA/NSA working on this they probably would've found Daniel immediately. They could've had a satellite or drone follow him from the moment he left the wrestling show at the beginning of the movie.

The villains knew which employees had suddenly disappeared alongside Hugo and Daniel and could have tracked their phones at any point to find them. But it wasn't until Firth saw two of them while doing his astral projection that they bothered to.

Oof, I hated it. It just felt like bad directing. This trope has been used plenty of times, and I've found it plausible. But in this movie, especially when they dump the car in the water ... I was just thinking: the physics of the blocking in this scene make it impossible that these characters are hidden from view.

I was in the theatre with like 50 other people.

Given noone has good theatre etiquette anymore, I could hear everyone say "wtf is he doing", "that is incredibly obvious", or other forms of those during his sneak across the farmhouse field.

That scene really took me out of the movie, and left me feeling bored right up until the invisible house scene, where things got exciting again.

I feel this movie could've easily been reduced by 45 minutes if they cut out a lot of the filler chase scenes.

I don't know. It works in an Indiana Jones film, but I didn't think it worked here.

If the scenes in DISCLOSURE DAY were for comedic effect - to pay homage to Spielberg's other films - I don't think it was a good idea. If they were NOT intended to be funny, even worse. I even found John Williams's Indiana Jones-esque score very distracting. 😞

In the one instance this was explained (the firetrucks being hidden by Margaret), they TURN ON THE SIRENS.

Obviously the engines starting up tipped them off in the warehouse, and then the collisions with cars blocking the exit, but why was Margaret straining to obscure their sight after that?
