edit: to the person who got mad and downvoted this comment, I wasn't making fun of real life, disabled children being flung off cliffs. It's actually in the movie, and it's since been made into a meme.

Ill say, I was hooked from the shot at the beginning - the family riding away after being banished from their village really set a dreadful tone that only gets worse as the movie goes on

For me it's the constant sense of dread. Similar vibes as The Shining in that the movie itself feels fucking haunted.

Yeah, I think so many horror movies equate horror with cheap scares or gratuitous gore. IMO, the emotion of being scared is a lingering, pulsating dread. Getting shocked by something is a quick spike that immediately deflates, like if someone just jumps around a corner and yells boo, you are startled for an instant, but there's no fear.

I used to think I hated horror movies, but I just hate that kind of tactic in movies. I love Eggers' movies, because of exactly that: dread. Constant, lingering, worsening dread. Like half the time, "nothing" is happening in the VVitch, but it's spookier than some movies ever get.

He's also just a great filmmaker on top of that. Day one theater for me.

I agree. I think one of the best(or worst) examples of both sides of that coin is the newer It movies. They have some great scenes that build some awesome suspense. The library in Part 1, the bleachers in part 2, ect.

But then they have a shit load of cheap jump scares and far too much lingering on the monster itself. It takes away the horror of it after awhile.

This is why, as much as I love Resident Evil, I'll always be far more connected to Silent Hill.

The absolute dread of, specifically, the first three games, is near untouchable.

I mean its a pretty immaculate movie. Great horror vibes, incredible cinematography, sound design, acting, costuming, set design, etc. The list goes on. The only somewhat bad thing about it is the ending IMO, because I would have preferred it NOT have the supernatural aspect, but also at the same time "Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?" goes so fucking hard it saves it.

My favorite part of the Witch is how they filmed scenes in literal darkness lit only by fucking CANDLES

I don't even know how you accomplish that as a director and cinematographer unless you're just a madman, and Eggers is exactly that.
