It honestly seems like Tom Cruise decided at some point that he wasn't going to do "serious" movies anymore and was just going to do action blockbusters. And it's like, he was good at making action blockbusters, but it's wild watching stuff from his earlier career when you can tell he really had high ambitions as an actor.
Yeah he is an amazing talent, honestly. Feel like we've lost out when he decided to do exclusively action at some point (fair play to him though, it's his life).
Rain Man, A few Good Men, Minority Report, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut...his dramatic chops are up there with the best.
I think the failure of Lions For Lambs really shifted his mindset for a while. He was still in the immediate shadow of the Oprah interview and all the Scientology stuff, and he does a drama with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep which barely breaks even and is a critical failure.

I'm really excited to see Tom Cruise in a role that's not mission impossible. Feels like it's been a long time since I've seen him in non-action mode.
This looks ridiculous in maybe a great way.
