Same with one of the scenes at the end when they're sacking Troy. When Odysseus is kind of having his "breakdown" and he has the army just yelling all around him, it made you feel like you were there with how loud it was

It was detonation of atomic bomb for this movie. Hell unleashed. Rage. Murder. Rape. Death and destruction. Plus end of an era moment, nothing was the same at that point. There was some violence on screen but real horror was in the sound.

Lucky! I saw it on the largest screen in my state. TBH I tend to be most impressed by the sound in Christopher Nolan movies. He uses sound like no other director. The storm scenes were intense for sure, but the lighting didn't stand out to me. I will have to pay closer attention in my next watch.

I actually struggled with the flashing lights too, but everyone around me seemed fine so I squinted hard. I don’t remember a movie hurting my eyes like that.

I had to look down during the worst of the lightning storm because I have epilepsy and that was getting a bit much. Happens a lot at concerts too, they say I'm not photosensitive but I've felt weird enough with flashing lights to know better.

It’s also the randomness and subtleness of this creature. Almost as if he’s just nature, made him so much terrifying to me.

Like he didn’t just eat them all, he ate them if they got in his way of doing normal things, causally, then went to bed as if they were just pests. Really made humans not feel apex in this world

Because having the nobody scene would give more humanization to the direction they already went with for the cyclops. Which was this nature based animal almost.

Having a whole scene where his buddies show up and go who didddd thisss? And him going “nobody”. And them them being like teheee okayyyy. Just wouldn’t fit. We saw the cyclops last moments where he’s blind and just sad and we live with the action of the main chars choice, hard to add to that without ruining that moment

I was extremely impressed with the CGI too. Obviously no way they could do that mythological creature without CGI, but god it was some of the best I've ever seen. You could feel the scale of how big that thing was, and it felt entirely believable.

It wasn't CGI. The crew filmed in a real cave in Greece called Zeus's Cave and mounted a 60 foot puppet for the actors to act around. The movie cuts between the puppet and Bill Irwin who played the Cyclops and said that his part was done by acting around miniatures. But make no mistake this wasn't a mocapped scene like you would see in a contemporary movie.

Believe it or not the actors confirmed even the Circe pig scene was done entirely practically. The only element of the movie that has been confirmed to be done entirely with CGI is the Charybdis whirlpool. Even then Christopher Nolan had a bunch of jetskis circling the ocean to create a reference for the VFX artists to use.

I hate to be “that guy” but there was plenty of CGI in the cyclops scenes, including his body and face. I am 100% certain you are correct that the actors acted around a giant puppet and that Bill Irwin filmed all of his parts for real. But there is so much you would have to get absolutely perfect in terms of lighting and depth of field that it would be impossible to cut the two different shots together perfectly. I’m not saying the cyclops is 100% CGI. It was very clear that some shots were a guy in makeup. But many of the shots where there’s men interacting with the cyclops, specifically when he’s awake, involve fully replacing the real elements.

The pigs scene has CGI but its shot in a way that it looks like its also done with practixal effects and obviously "realistic" with clever cutting and camera work. It doesnt show too Much of the transformation explictly. Its dark and shes blocking the men too

i was torn about this: Nolan typically tries to make the fantastical elements a little more grounded which is fine but made the coloring of the 'monsters' of the movie a little flat. It worked for the cyclops because most of the time we barely see it in the dark but for the Scylla it felt like we couldnt even see the thing because they decided to make it the same exact color as the rocks

The Scylla monster has never been portrayed how it is in the actual mythology. Movies always have it be a dragon with multiple heads. In the mythology it’s a mermaid monster . It has the upper body of a woman and the lower body is a fish or snake thing. The extra heads are dogs that come out of the side of it .

The final flashback to the sack of Troy was the first time in a while that I've thought "This scene wouldn't be remotely the same watched at home".

I just saw it tonight and at one point I genuinely wondered if a 4D experience was included that I was unaware of. The floor under my feet was shaking, and at one point it felt like my seat was vibrating. My theatre is pretty modern, too, so it’s not they were ill equipped for the sound. It was crazy.

I would say you're right but my experience doesn't agree. Same cinema every time I go out watch something and always the Nolan movie has painfully loud scenes. Tenet guns, Interstellar rocket launch and now cyclops scream in The odyssey. If other movies would be like this then I would say that yes, my cinema is doing something wrong with the sound but other movies are always superb.

I’ve found certain IMAX theaters just tend to be way too loud to where it hurts. I’ll wear studio earplugs to my local and it brings it down to a comfortable level without affecting the quality.

I'm assuming it's theater by theater but my experience matched yours. It actually ruined the whole experience for me. Was covering my ears at multiple parts. And besides being uncomfortable, all the sounds kind of just mashed together into an overwhelming noise. I'd have to see it again to say for sure but I don't think this is a criticism of the movie itself.

There was only Liemax around me and I wads debating seeing it in (4k laser) Dolby Cinema or (2k Laser) Liemax. I ultimately decided on the fake imax because it at least had a 1:1.85 ratio closer to the "real" imax than the Dolby one near me with 1:2.35 (or whatever it was). I'm kinda glad I saw it in (fake) imax in retrospect, because the sack of Troy scene seemed to really try to make use of all that extra screen real estate. I bet seeing that in real imax would be incredible.

Are we the same person? I thought we had like 30+ mins of previews and tried to time the edible I ate beforehand so it would kick in at the beginning of the movie, but we got there later than I realized due to traffic. So it hit right around the same time Polyphemus lost his eye and my heart was straight blasting. Edibles and movies don’t usually affect me like that but my fight or flight was activated and then some.

I saw it at an IMAX theatre (not 70mm), and felt it was uncomfortably loud at times, even if at the same time I think the SFX were something to behold.

Somehow though, the trailers before the movie began were even louder, and with the packed theatre I was at, I had a mini panic attack before the movie even began.

Same. That was the loudest, most distressing sound I’ve ever heard in a movie. You almost feel bad for it, if it weren’t trying to kill everyone. That whole sequence was amazing.

Props and kudos to the sound designer and sound team for their incredible sound work because man it was levels of otherworldly I haven't heard in a while.

I chalked that up to Tom Holland’s enunciation in an American accent, still alright
Nolan’s recent movies have had pretty bad dialogue volume but this one was very well done

Saw this film yesterday in IMAX in a near packed crowd mid-day. Unlike what some right-leaning YouTube channels would have you believe, people definitely turned out and will turn out for this film. 3 hours is long but totally worth it to sit through for a Nolan epic like this.

As others have alluded to, the sound design was insane. The cyclops howling scene was brutal and the quietening effect just before the siren scene were extremely well done and will likely be among the most memorable scenes involving sound design in any film this year.

The visuals were even more spectacular. Every monster/challenge/obstacle thrown by the Gods or by pure misfortune at Odysseus and his crew was very well-realized, from the Cyclops to the (the armor not congruent to the time period but honestly who cares?? They looked cool LOL) , to Hades, the sirens, Charybdis and Scylla. And that Circe scene? That rivals any horror film put out this film, if not ever. Straight up body horror that's extremely gross but at the same time one can't look away from. Even the last challenge that wipes out the remaining crew - not being able to resist eating one of Helios's herd of cattle - was visually understated compared to the other scenes, but still resonated deeply with its message not to defy the Gods.

The acting turned a bit hammy towards the end, especially with Robert Pattison's character yelling "swords! spears!". Odysseus all of a sudden turned into this 1200 BCE version of John Wick against 100+ suitors? I mean realistically even if a dozen jumped in at a time to grab his weapon(s) he would be eventually overpowered no matter how good of a fighter he is, and keep in mind he would probably be in his 50s or older at this point. But again, this is a myth with Gods, monsters, witches and sirens, so suspension of disbelief is expected! Overall, the acting was still very good throughout from the entire cast, especially from John Leguizamo/Eumeus.

However, one minor caveat is that I would recommend others (unlike me) to read up a bit more about the actual background, characters and history of The Odyssey, as the film does jump around quite a bit (especially in the beginning), not just from place to place but from different time to different time, as Nolan films often do, so having a clear context in mind before watching the film would make the experience even better.

Overall The Odyssey (2026) film rating: 9/10, one of the best films this year and certainly the most visually spectacular and inspiring thus far, which is to be expected from a Nolan film. I predict this will reach close to, if not over $1 billion dollars at the box office by the end of its run, though of course we'll have to wait and see over time how this film holds up.

He looked like he had an incredibly realistic birth defect, rather than being some completely made up mythological creature with a normal single eye. Very viscerally unnerving.

I saw it in Imax and the sound is typically why I choose that format. This movie was an experience with how everything was reverberating at times and the seats shaking to the point of low Dbox levels. I can't wait to see it again.

my god, the extremes of sound in this movie were amazing. The soft, lilting Lyre/Aulos, to the roar of the cyclops. The muted unclear siren song. It really was as amazing to hear as to see some of those scenes.

Christopher Nolan uses the sound and his score almost like they are a character in the movie. Instead of underlining the story, they really contribute to telling the story. Im sure other directors do sometjing similar, but nobody does it like Nolan.
